I've visited Golubac fortress last week! Incredible views and amazing history. The ride through the villages was great too! Much better than a boring highway. Great video, Brad!

Brad thanks to you were all can see again part's ours beautiful country! Hvala mate! Nisam ni znao da toliko lijepih krajeva ima ,thanks to internet. 🤩
Fun fact... Golub,.. pigeon in English. So, Golubac would be pigeon city or something like that or place where pigeons live . You saw pigeons still flying around that place. 😊
I am Hungarian and the fortress Hungarian name is "Galambóc". The "pigeon" is "galamb" in Hungarian. The "bóc" word is probably a transformed form of "dúc". The "dúc" in the Hungarian meaning "pigeon loft". (A structure for keeping pigeons, usually built on a high place or on legs, with separate enclosures with a lid, where the pigeons intended for breeding nest. ) So the "pigeon loft" in Hungarian is "galambdúc". The galamb in Latin is "columba" and in Greek is "kolumbo" (what means "fly away"). Golubac was replaced in Roman times by a fortress called Columbaria, probably built by Emperor Trajan. (It was Trajan who built the road network more thoroughly, and also erected a bridge connecting the two shores of the Iron Gate, the memory of which is preserved by a stone-carved sign, "Tabula Traiana.")
Thx for sharing! So nice to see the top of Golubac from the top vantage point in your vid. Did you see Smederevo and Ram Fortresses too? We did them all in in the same day plus Silver Lake. It just didn’t leave us the extra time we needed to tackle that hike up. We really enjoyed our day visiting Golubac. We will go to the top next time!
I took most of the day to climb all around this fortress and then had dinner at 6 PM so we had no time to see the other two in the same day. One day I'll get out to the other two and film them as well!
Thank you Brad for an amazing video! I'm a Serbian living in Australia..and as you probably know can't leave🇦🇺.... it's been almost 2 years😔so this video mean so much to me...

Wao... Y were in my neighborhood. Literally in my backyard. :) wish we met, hope you had a good time. I grow up there, jumped from fortress wall, fishing near by, everything before reconstruction and commercialization... The most beautiful national park lies beyond fortress.
45:46 So glad you did go up the stairs. Those costumes are out of this world. I never saw close ups of medieval Serbian attire! There must've been a lot of peasants making them. These are just amazing.
Thanks for the video! I'd never, ever, for life, go up myself there! I believe some of those holes in the towers were not toilets but a way to draw supplies up using ropes. I'd also suggest visiting Silver lake (Сребрно језеро) and having lunch in one of numerous good restaurants there.

Anyway thank you Brad Beckett for this very interesting video. I have been researching the history of medieval Hungarian castles, temples and fortresses for a long time and Golubac has always been one of my favorites. Among other things, because of the amazingly beautiful and picturesque environmental conditions. Golubac Fortress has often become the property of the historic Hungarian Kingdom, so it is an integral part of our history. I remember the fortress when it was still ruined and tourists were forbidden to visit. I’m especially happy to have it restored, so at least in addition to being accessible, it offers an even more amazing sight. I’m also grateful for the video because I’ll probably never climb the top of the fortress (I’m incredibly acrophobic) so I can enjoy the view at least through the video.

Yes, those holes are toilets. All European castles have the same thing, except that in some places they are made just like those here, and in others they are made entirely of wood.
They should have more stringent requirements for that 3rd level, only mountain climbers and there should be extra security measures (ropes and what not). This is too risky and makes no sense for a tourist attraction. My 2 cents.
@@bradbeckett Nope, Serbian-American here. If a tourist gets hurt, and it seems like you almost fell, that would be just awful. I am all for no fences on Kelemegdan etc. but that climb seems like something many shouldn't be tempted to do, and that's human nature, to say I want the 3rd level.
@@antipolitika4552 Actually every few years someone fall from kalemegdan fortress walls. some people even fall from the wall directly in the bear cage in belgrade zoo. I knew it!
Not ancient toilets, rather defensive holes, put Canon balls thru or hot oil... :-D
.. or other things ;)
I also remember that.. Some old fortresses had holes to throw hot / boiling oil or something burning down over the head of the enemies
I thought of that too, maybe they threw rocks or arrows at their enemies, or my other idea was that it was an escape route with ladders.
