@@dplqb I know, right!? I thought the same thing when I first heard this decades ago 😥 Kurt and Michael Stipe were totally going to do this song together, I think...if... only if. 😥
Thanks God Kurt backed put of working with Stipe. It wouldn't have been as amazing as what people think. It would have been a disaster. Kurt worked better as he did. If its not broke don't fix it. Plus Kurt sounded, played, and wrote songs a hundred times better than REM. They are over rated. Nirvana and Kurt wasn't.
Some people hear this song and think it was destined to be one of those fabled acoustic-ish songs Kurt sometimes talked about moving the band towards on their In Utero follow up. I really disagree. The chord structures and strumming in the build-up to the chorus really sound like they’re intended to be played loudly, with lots of distortion, and with a crashing drum background. As a drummer myself Kurt must have been a dream to drum for. The drum parts for his songs almost write themselves.
Too bad they didn't include it in their Unplugged set, maybe it was nothing but a basic and unpolished song for Kurt, but I would love to hear it with Lori Goldston's cello, and Kurt's calm/raspy voice he had on Unplugged.
He wrote it in 1994 so I don't think it's possible that they would have played it on the unplugged (november 1993). Also, I doubt the others even knew about the existence of this song
@@brainlet5018you're right, I think I read or heard somewhere they had done this together right after Kurt's "intervention" in his basement, just days before he died. This would have been a GOOD one.
@@bowlingstoned2113 i saw here on yt someone might have a couple snippets of the basement recording but it was fcking recorded over by something, so its just like 10 seconds of the song, could easily be a fake tho
As much as I do love this version (especially that little riff you play right before the chorus), I think I prefer the original you did. I've been listening to that entire unplugged album non-stop on my drives to work since you released it. Amazing work.
I remember hearing this on the "Best of the Box" compilation and it hit a nerve with me as well. Then I looked up when it was recorded (March '94) and it made the song seem just more final. Like it was Kurt's unofficial swan song especially when you dissect the lyrics. This would have been a DAMN good song had he lived to put it out.
Hey bro i love your work please keep going! Could you please turn more acoustic songs insto electric song like you did with lake of fire? This turned out great!!!

This song. I just love it sm, Its so fucking good. Well, not good, but words will never describe how fucking good this song is. I can't get it out of my head, but in a good way.
Feel like this song wasn't finished yet, he's just singing phonetics for most of it. He was a great lyricist and a great set of lyrics would have raised it another level
This version was definitely not complete. But Kurt, Pat and Eric Erlandson recorded a (unreleased) demo in Kurt's basement (Kurt on vocals and drums, Pat on guitar and Eric on bass) and Eric said in an interview that "Yeah, Kurt had it already figured out, we were just there for the ride.", so we just have to wait that this version releases one day so we could have a better idea of what the song would have sounded like
As well you write it. There are 4 versions of this song. The Medley version (the first tape is said to have been recorded in '94, and when that tape is cut the second tape that makes up this version is said to be an early '93 Do Re Mi version). (Home demo). The tape of the supposed March 5, 1994, which is Do Re Mi from the With the Light's album. (Home demo). A version that was recorded with Pat and Eric was also a home demo. And finally it is said that there was a somewhat elaborate version that was in honor of the fight against drugs when he escaped from a rehabilitation clinic in Los Angeles. This is a theory, it is unknown if it is true or not, but if so, this version was recorded 2 days before the suicide or during that period of time.
@@lacarretera59 didn't know about the april demo, but the home demo from WTLO is definitely from January. Kurt overdosed and got taken to the hospital on the 4th of march, so there's no way the WLTO demo is recorded on the 5th march
So then, I AM remembering correctly that there was another Do Re Mi on MTV video you did before this that you took down and replaced with this because it was “too awkward” or something like that? Thought it was just the Mandela effect but fantastic job anyways!
Dave mostly used drum sticks called hot rods during the unplugged performance, basically they’re small bundles of tiny sticks, that’s what the unplugged drum sound is

Such an R.E.M. song, can you imagine Kurt and Michael Stipe singing this together (sigh).😢
If I get proficient in AI singing overdubs, it would be a great idea.
Kurt said in a '93 interview that he was tired of screaming and wanted to do songs like R.E.M. on acoustic.

If I may
And if I might
Lie me down, weeping
And if I say
What it's like
I might be dreaming
If I may
What is right?
Some make time to see me heal
Those years in his bonet
A phrase from his pocket
And chains of a knowing life-long dream
Dream, dream
Do re mi, do re mi
If I may
And if I might
Wake me up and see me
And if I do
And if I lie
Find me out at sea
And if I may
Cold as ice
I might have to see me
Dream
The rays in his socket
A phrase from this moment
The chase on his socket, I will need
Dream, dream
Do re mi, do re mi
Do re mi, do re mi
Wish me good
Wish made light
Find me out at sea
He's under a wave
Just be quiet
Follow pain and grieving
Yell, "Oh well"
And if I sigh
Seek me out, teeming
If I may
If I might
Golden gun to bleed
And praise in his pocket
Rays from his women
Chains from his knowing
Live a dream
Dream, dream
Do re mi, do re mi
Do re mi, do re mi
Do re mi, do re mi
