Just saw them live in Tucson last night. I must say that Madeline's vocals are just as pretty live as they are recorded. Of course the band itself was tight and well practiced, I was very impressed.

But when he offered to let her go she tied him up and 'abducted' him: that is their relationship, and neither of them is letting go. And at the end we see she wasn't scribbling a final note but kisses instead: she loved him.
