What is so sad is that so many of these people were just looking for acceptance and community. It was so moving to see people from all different walks of life, ethnicities and races coming together as a family. It's so tragic what happened to them all.

exactly...it's so incredibly sad...every time i watch this, I cry.
it could've been such a wonderful community...you can tell most of the people there wanted that.

Yes, White Nights and the aftermath. All strewn together and on the cover of magazines and papers worldwide. Truly, such a waste. The saddest thing was that Jones while cruel and evil had convinced many of a very idealistic world which seemed both beautiful and for a a short while, close to attainable.

    From the Director:
"For this music video we didn't want to put a spin on the footage or the peoples lives-instead we wanted to re-tell and humanize their story. Lastly, I am moved to say when we completed the video we were able to preview it for some of the survivors of the Jonestown Massacre, who expressed their appreciation of our focus on the lives of the People's Temple members as opposed to exploiting the graphic images of the final tragedy. "
I think you people should really calm down.

The lyrics go perfect with this video. The lyrics can have different meanings to whom you focus on. There are 4 different perspectives: Children, believers, the ones being held against their will, and Jim Jones. The last lyrics are "I think that you should wake up, I think I want to live my life and you're just in my way" The children to their parents, the believers to the non, the ones that want to leave the cult, and Jim Jones to the MEDIA. The video is so real it hurts my heart and brain.

You said it perfectly Calvin. You're the only other person I'm aware of who really got it, though I know there are many. You are a gifted thinker. Would you ever consider reading the poetry of Dylan Thomas? He writes the way you described this video. It's really mind-expanding stuff with deeper meanings that highly empathetic people like yourself will enjoy discovering. D Thomas is the poet that Bob Dylan named himself after. I think you'd enjoy DT's poetry. Stay free and peace, from Los Angeles.

The song "Go Outside" by Cults is a catchy indie pop tune that has a dark and sinister backstory. The song samples the voice of Jim Jones, the leader of the Peoples Temple cult, who orchestrated the mass murder-suicide of over 900 of his followers in Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978¹. The song's lyrics contrast the desire to go outside and enjoy life with the urge to stay inside and avoid reality. The song's music video, directed by Isaiah Seret, depicts the life of the cult members in Jonestown, with the band members playing the roles of the Jonestown band². The video also shows the final moments of the tragedy, when Jones ordered his followers to drink poisoned Kool-Aid².
The song's meaning can be interpreted in different ways. Some might see it as a critique of religious oppression and blind faith, as Jones manipulated his followers into believing that death was preferable to living in a treacherous world. Others might see it as a metaphor for a toxic relationship, where one partner wants to break free from the other's control and negativity. The song could also be seen as a personal reflection of the band members' own struggles with depression and anxiety, as they expressed in interviews. The song's catchy melody and upbeat tempo contrast with its dark lyrics and theme, creating a sense of irony and tension. The song is a reminder that life is precious and should not be wasted on fear or misery.

I think what I love about it, is not that it's glorifying Jim Jones, the event, or any ideology like that, it's taking a positive uplifting song and juxtaposing it to hungry souls who wished to emit that same positive energy even if it ended in tragedy. I think it's a positive way to acknowledge the tragedy while also taking lessons from it

Intro: But to me, death is not-
Death is not a fearful thing, it's living that's treacherous
Do not be afraid to die
If these people land out here
They'll torture some of our children here, they'll torture our people
They'll torture our seniors, we cannot allow this
Actual singing part: I, I really want to go out
I really want to go outside and stop to see your day
You, you really want to hole up
You really want to stay inside and sleep the light away
I, I really want to go out
I really want to go outside and bathe in light all day
You, you really want to hole up
You really want to stay inside in the cave where you lay
    Well, I know what's good
Exactly 'cause I have been there before
    Yeah, I know what's gold
Exactly those things night cannot behold
I, I really want to go out
I really want to go outside and stop to see your day
You, you really want to hole up
You really want to stay inside and sleep the light away
I, I think it's good to go out
'Cause if you don't you'll never make a memory that will stay
I, I think that we should break up
I think I want to live my life, and you're just in my way

I always kind of heard this song as expressing something similar to that. People can ''go outside'' and experience life or they can stay stagnant and alone, but everybody struggles to balance the two. Jonestown forced those two impulses to smash into each other at full force. It's all horribly sad and everyone smiling and laughing makes it's even sadder.
