- The Mark, an iconic 750,000-square-foot, 48-story office and hotel tower stands as a striking addition to downtown Seattle’s skyline and is the first ever quarter-block site to be developed in the city.
The small site footprint not only ensured innovation in the resulting faceted structure of the tower, but also the celebration and preservation of two historic buildings adjacent to the tower - the former First United Methodist Church, now known as The Sanctuary, and The Rainier Club.
With just 15,000 square feet available on level one of the Mark, floor area needed to expand on subsequent floors. As a result, the tower subtly slopes over the existing historic structures - with the lower northwest corner cantilevering over The Rainier Club by more than 20 feet - before tapering back gently through a sequence of triangulated building planes. This faceted scheme optimizes building height and configuration, allowing for column-free floor plates for maximum flexibility.
The Mark’s design also solves for seismic concerns with a mega-brace structural technology enveloping the building that is a first for towers in high-seismic regions.
