Hiya Dave, I can't see why it wouldn't work but I'm into detailing/valeting cars on a weekend and I've been using a tyre serum conditioner for some time. My product of choice is called Garage Therapy Tyre Serum, it helps to keep the rubber nourished and helps stop the sidewall from drying out and cracking. All you do is apply it to clean tyres with a small sponge allow to dry and that's it, the water beads off the tyre and also aids in keeping the tyre cleaner for longer. I'm also looking into what other of my detailing products can be used on the caravan walls ie waxes and spray on sealants again to help keep them cleaner for longer but easier to clean too.
Thanks for the heads up, sounds perfect, will investigate further. Sounds like you take a lot of pride in valeting. Hats off 👍 Cheers, Helen & Dave
Hi I keeping forgetting about the spare 1 under the caravan I need two new 1 ,
now I need three now you have said about the spare 👍
Easy done 😀
Another interesting video, may think about Tyron bands for our tyres 👍
Hi Andrew & Karen, Like us, you do a lot of miles and you’ve only got to do it once but it may just get you out of trouble. Also if the tyre comes off, it can damage the body of your caravan. Thanks again for watching and leaving a comment. Cheers, Dave & Helen 👍
Good film 👌 good those tyres on the drive guys we had them once for the Moho
Agreed, convenient, don’t fancy dragging the caravan down to a tyre centre lol. Hope you’re all well. Cheers, Dave & Helen 👍
Get my van her new shoes put on, on Monday, I asked my local Kwik fit and was told they didn't do them, so I've gone to a small local company, and got a great price fitted
Hi Neil, that's good. The fitter told me that each of the mobile fitters has a territory, think his covers about a 30 mile radius from the nearest City. It may well depend on where you live but, you're all sorted at a price you are happy with so RESULT!! thanks for watching. Dave & Helen.
Great video, always wondered how the Tyron Bands went on.
Hi Mark & Coral, thanks. Yeah, not a lot to em really but the job they do is a game changer. 👍
Hi Dave (and Helen), another great video. I have Tryon bands on the van, thankfully never had to witness them working but reassured knowing they are fitted. STEVE 👍
Thanks for watching Steve. The more safety features the better as far as I’m concerned. Thanks again, Dave & Apple 👍
Hi Dave
A very informative video. We just put 4 new tyres on our Pamplona after having a blowout on a recent trip. Tyres were coming up to 5 yrs old so decided on replacing the 4. Didn't do the spare as it's not ever been used and looked perfect. At £320 it's a price worth paying for safety.
Couldn’t agree more. Safety first and a price worth paying for peace of mi d. Thanks for your support. ATB, Dave & Helen 👍
We had trouble getting the tyres changed on our caravan because of the Tyron Bands, well worth having though we thought. Just back and catching up.
Hope you had a nice holiday. Thanks for watching, Helen & Dave 👍
Hi, Dave great video 📹 It's a minefield out there on tyres. I remember when I did my tyres back mid-last year it was very interesting watching the guy remove the trying bands and getting info about exactly what they do making our video was an eye-opener on how the tyre can get baked fmby the sun and disfigure the tyre and cracking. Your spare looked in really good shape. Cheers and thanks for sharing 👍 Paul
Hi Paul & Sarah, tbh it was watching your video last year that inspired me to do this. Necessary evil but I thought I should do all 3, got a lot of tours booked this year. ATB to you both.
Great video, now looking forward to the silky video. I use the cream on my van it's brilliant. Would like to see the other products they produce.
Hi Sue & Graham, hope you’re both well. Thanks as always for your support. I’m quite looking forward to trying the Silky stuff, heard good things. Cheers Dave & Helen 👍
Hi Dave, interesting footage 👍 job well done 😊
Hi Liz, thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. The van is good to go! ATB, Dave & Helen.
Hi Dave. another great video. Very informative, I don't have Tyron bands on my van but do have TPMS. I have to agree with you about changing all 3 tyres. I have had my van 10 years now and both times I had new tyres I have had the spare changed as well. Many will say this might be unnecessary but for my own piece on mind I've done it for the sake of another £70/£80 well worth it IMO. I was surprised at the age of the new spare tyre though. Not sure I would have agreed to have that on a few months yes but over a year old, I'm nut so sure.
Hi Mark, thanks very much for watching and your comment. Completely agree, it’s not worth skimping on safety, all three regardless. I did feel a bit short changed on the date of the spare and I’ve done some research and a tyre can be sold as ‘New’ for up to 5 years from the date of manufacture providing it has been stored correctly. It is then good for a further 5 to 7 or even 10 years once fitted. Still changing mine every 5 from date of fitting though. ATB, Dave & Helen 👍
Great video. Those bits of rubber are the only thing between you (or your pride and joy) and the road! Something I’d never skimp on.
Generally prefer to deal with local/family businesses but we can take our van and smallish trailer to them. I guess the nationals have an advantage with a mobile service? Life is full of compromises!
Spot on Richard! You can’t be too careful. We’re surrounded by the big boys but a new tyre/exhaust place has opened up and I will suss them out for the future. Thanks as always for watching and your comment. ATB, Dave & Helen
Hi Dave. Another really great video. I have got Tyron bands on my van and I did wonder how they are fitted.
I always come away from watching your videos learning something.
As they say Every Day is a School Day.
On the Silky products I have used the Silky cream cleaner and it is very good .
T
Hi Greg, thanks mate, that’s fab feedback & really appreciated. Truth is, I always learn a lot too, either as part of the prep or more often than not, from the feedback/comments I get from you guys. Rob (Robs wise ways) said that Tyron bands should be standard/compulsory fit and I do agree with him. Looking forward to giving the Silky products a go. Cheers, Dave & Helen 👍
Hi Dave & Helen, Another great video and interesting watch 👍. You know me and my preference for manufactures original equipment, well last year I had three tyres ordered from Bailey which were changed during service time. I specified Tyron bands when we ordered the caravan 10 years ago and personally think they should be a standard fit. Looking forward to seeing the cleaning product review. All the best, Rob & Gail 😀
Hi Rob & Gail, I do admire the fact that you’re a perfectionist and your knowledge. I like things to work but am pretty useless when it comes to doing stuff, although I’ve primed some new windows today for our summer house and I’m chuffed to bits 😂😂. Totally agree ref: Tyron bands, should be law really. Thanks for watching. ATB Dave and Helen 👍
Great video again Dave. I did wonder about what happens to all of these hardly worn tyres that come off caravans after less than 5 years use. Whilst I’m not a fanatical environmentalist, I have grown to have more awareness of the effects we have on the planet for our kids and grandkids. It’s good to see Kwik Fit have their own recycling plant and recycle 100% of the tyres they replace. All that said, it doesn’t feel good to me that tyres can be date stamped and maybe lose a year or two of their life before they’re even fitted. Surely they could solve that issue. That’s my Greta moment for the day 😂 We’ve always had Tyron bands fitted ever since we started caravanning many years ago, but thankfully never experienced them being used in anger. We’ve just bought a Tyrepal system for our new caravan which we pick up on Wednesday. Since retiring, I’m more aware of the potential for tyres to disrupt our travels now we go to more places with more shorter stops. Its sounds like your sticking with the great van you have 😉
Hi there Alan, I was a bit miffed about the spare being over a year old, so I looked into it (online) and by law a tyre manufactured within 5 years and stored in the correct conditions can be classified as new and once fitted is good for 5, 7 or even 10 years depending on how hard it's worked and cared for. I'm a bit more reassured now but will always change at the 5 year mark. Bet you are excited about the new van (what have you gone for). We have made a decision on the new van and will do the big reveal in our next video lol. Thanks for watching.ATB, Dave & Helen.
@@HelenandDave We had a big, heavy twin axle, fixed bed Swift Elegance 645. We always said we would do more multi-stopover trips when I retired and for this reason (plus wanting something my XC40 will tow) we decided to go with single axle, more living space hence no fixed bed, and also because we've had a few Swifts now (enjoyed them all) something different. We've gone with a Coachman VIP 520 which fits the bill. We had the side dinette layout a few times in the past and like the extra space. We also feel cheated by fixed beds which are normally only full length for one of each of our legs that goes in the middle 😊 As it happens, my wife has a bad back and sleeps better on the made up beds in the caravan anyway. We've added Duvalays for bit more luxury. Can't wait for the big reveal...
@@alanmiller259 can’t beat a Coachman Alan. Wishing you and your good lady many happy travels. 👍
@@HelenandDave Much appreciated. I have an off topic question for you. Do you use your caravan cover all year round, or just when the van isn’t being used so much in winter and autumn? We have had a full cover in the past, but found we didn’t use it so much because it was a bit awkward to fit. I’m looking at the Specialised roof cover and wondering if it’s worthwhile now we’re coming into Spring and Summer. Alan
@@alanmiller259 Hi there Alan, I haven’t seen the roof covers, sounds interesting. We tend to use the cover late autumn and through the winter because other than that we are away at every opportunity. Thanks again, Dave & Helen 👍
Great video Dave, would you have the spare wheel tyre changed next time or keep it ?, if I am not mistaken we have two more years before our tyres need changing, has always thanks for the video, and hope you and Helen are well,👍👍.
Hi Buster, I may decide to change the spare every other change, assuming it has not been used. We’re both well and getting ready for another trip. ATB, Dave & Helen 👍
Nice and convenient, good price too 👍 .. My Unicorn tyres are being replaced during it's 5th service by the dealer in March £200 for two. The spare is good for another two years at least. I don't have Tyron bands but I do have TryPal TMPS ... Just a heads up I've also asked the dealer to replace two tyre valve sensors, according to TyrPal the sealed batteries within the sensors only last 3-5 years. Another £70 😟
Hi Gary, there's always something to be spending money on!!! but you can't put a price on your safety really, so well worth it. You'll be all good for a while afterwards though. Happy travels and thanks for watching. ATB, Dave & Helen.
Hi, just had a chance to see your new tyres being fitted very professional.
One thing I noticed is that the Tyrone bands require a special tool to remove them, having abit of research it seems you have make sure the tyre supplier/fitter is made aware of this as not all have the capability of fitting if tyron bands are on.
One other thing how is your new caravan debate going 🙂
Paul and Joanne
Hi Paul & Joanne, yes, that’s right. Normally tyres fitted with a Tyron band will have a sticker on the wheel itself that says ‘Tyron’ on it. Video out today at 4:30pm ref: New Caravan 👍 Thanks for watching. Cheers, Dave & Helen 👍
Hi Dave and Helen,
Thanks for the reply, looking forward to your video today.
Paul and Joanne 👍
@@Meggy6571 thank you 👍😊 (The Big Reveal)
I probably need to change the tyres on my little enclosed trailer too. I will take the opportunity to buy three new wheels with them and affix winter tyres to the existing wheels next winter when I get winter tyres for my car too. I'll then be able to go into snow country as normal tyres (or summer tyres) are not allowed in winter (🇯🇵). They are only 10" wheels so shouldn't be expensive. I also have the trailer M.O.T. (or 'shaken' as it is called here) coming up in September. So, it is probably a good idea.
Hi Andrew, challenging climate by the sound of it (from a towing perspective) are winter tyres allowed in Summer? Agreed, best to be MOT ready, you can't really put a price on your safety either. ATB, Dave ~& Helen.
Great Video Dave, not something I’ve considered. Probably only wish I had when I have a puncture and the tyre flies off!! As an aside I never see any vloggers advising on increasing car tyre pressures to tow. Is this something you do? My dealer said he never did!
Hi Philip, thanks for watching and your comment. I’ve never increased car tyre pressure when towing and tbh I’ve never heard of anyone doing it either. You’ve got me thinking now. ATB, Dave & Helen
Big thanks to Sean from Kwik-Fit 👍
Agreed, nice guy 👍
Hi Dave and Helen really like your videos. This isn't tyre related but was thinking the cover you use to cover your caravan when its parked on your drive can you do the same when travelling to and from the sites as this would keep the dirt off the caravan?Or isn't it allowed and would it be a problem because of how far it comes down too?ie:The tyres. Thanks Matt.
Hi there Matt, I don’t know if it’s legal or not but they are not designed to be suitable for towing (certainly ours isn’t) it would rip but also lights need to be visible at the rear. Thanks for watching, ATB, Dave and Helen 👍
Thank you for an interesting video. We are about to get new tyres for our caravan for the firs time and have to admit (as newbies!) I am nervous about reversing into one of the tyre fitting bays. I know there are mobile tyre fitters but that is more expensive. Any tips before we book would be appreciated?
Hi Tracey, thanks very much for watching and leaving a comment. TBH we’ve only ever used the mobile service. If you have a motor mover on your van then that would save the worry of reversing. If you don’t fancy that then you could always take the spare and one wheel off the van and take them in and put them on yourself but personally, I think it’s worth the money to get the mobile fitter in, saves a load of hassle. Thanks again for watching. Take care, Dave & Helen 👍
@@HelenandDave Thanks again for your reply. Just called Kwik Fit and these Maxxis tyres are one of the options they can offer me. Just wondering how you are finding these tyres?
@@traceya8699 really good Tracey 👍
Great video dave my caravan looked 10 times worse than that after taking a wrong turn up to mundsley north norfolk down a farmers track not good
Oh dear Martin, we’ve done that before but I know what the back roads of Norfolk can be like 👍 We’re off to Sandy Gulls soon so better make sure I don’t turn down that road 😂 ATB, Dave & Helen 👍
Hi Dave yes I’ve been to sandy gulls lots of people rave about the site but I found it a bit uneven and not much at all going on obviously good see view piece and quiet but not one for me
Have you been to the isle of sheppey I’m trying warden springs in may
Cheers martin
Hi Dave, another great vlog. The date stamp on the tyres and the date you get them fitted can be so annoying, as you lose so much use out of that tyre but better safe than sorry. Cheers Terry
Hi Terry, completely agree and there’s nothing you can do, it’s never pointed out to you either, I had to ask. Still, we’re all good for a bit. As always, thanks a lot. Cheers Dave & Helen
I took my Bailey ranger to a local tyre fitter for two new tyres. The tyres he put on were re-enforced but only inflate to max of 50psi but the plate of my caravan it say 55 psi but the fitter said the new ones would be fine what are your thoughts?
Hi Paul, I’m no expert but I’ve always been told to go by the plate on your caravan. I would get a 2nd opinion from another tyre fitter/supplier. Good luck 👍 Cheers, Dave & Helen
Any news on you potentially new caravan?
Hi Paul, yes there is and we will break the news in our next video (hopefully on Sunday). ATB, Dave & Helen 👍
I noticed after he used the gun to tighten the wheel nuts, for me this is wrong because these could be over tightened, and of course the torque wrench would crack off straight away. Surprised they fitted a tyre which was already a year old.
Hi Colin, I hadn’t considered the over tightening with the air gun. I don’t ever recall ever having a tyre fitted when a gun hasn’t been used. Good point. I should imagine many new tyres fitted were manufactured over a year before being fitted but it doesn’t feel right does it. Thanks for watching and your comment. ATB, Dave & Helen 👍
Why can't anybody find tyres , with Tyron bands fitted
Hi Leslie, the Tyron bands are fitted to the wheel not the tyre. I agree though that fitting this safety device to all caravans as standard by the manufacturer should be a given, after all, safety is paramount. Thanks for watching and Best wishes, Helen and Dave 👍
Commenting 7 months after post, but may interest you that here in Germany where we can hammer down the Autobahn at +200 km/h on ancient tyres on a car, if we add a trailer/caravan limit is 80 km/h. However, can get allowance to increase to 100 km/h under following circumstances:
1) Weight ratios car to trailer are in certain limits
2) Trailer is certified to 100 km/h, eg can't have leaf springs like my mega-stable Ifor Williams horse trailer, must have shock absorbers. (Ifor Williams has 100km/h EU licence but doesn't apply in Germany - we are sovereign here!!)
3) Tyres have a speed rating of at least 120 km/h
AND
4) Tyres not older than 6 years.
So if you have new tyres fitted that are already 18 months old, it won't be long before MoT (=TÜV every 2 years) will insist on new ones to get a pass!
That’s very interesting. Tyres are possibly my biggest safety concern but touch wood 🪵 so far no issues at all. We have been lucky but at 5 years it’s new boots for us! I wouldn’t be surprised though if the age limit you describe (TUV) was introduced here at some point. 60 MPH is plenty fast enough for me 😂😊 ATB and thanks, Helen & Dave 👍
@@HelenandDave I was in Norwich 13-20th October after driving from Munich in an EV. My first trip home in 20 years. Got a massive lung infection so did virtually nothing of what I wanted to do except visit Mum's grave in Old Buckenham. Didn't get out to Caister/Paston/Bacton where family farmed on emergency WWI airfield site, photo of Dad 1917 sitting in a double-decker (Sopwith?), nor all the other sites around the coast of his history - Mum & Dad met in Ormesby 1953 & married in Gt Yarmouth 6 weeks later - he was on 8 weeks leave from Trinidad. Nor time to relive mine as a student sailing from Blakeney to Orford, frolicking in the sands at Walberswick with the girls as a student in 1973. I'll be back next year with a caravan, I'm in the process of buying one (new), my first but sadly not a Brit which do appeal to me but service/dealer network is very limited here in World's End Bavaria!
Kwik fit BIG MISTAKE
Sounds like you might have had a bad experience but in 30+ years we never have. Each to their own and all that
