When I was in Ecuador a lady prepared juice for me from babaco and I loved it! The babaco in your video appears more ripe than the one she used. She peeled and cubed the babaco and tossed it into a blender with water, a bunch of sugar, and a raw egg. It was my favorite juice in Ecuador and I tried lots of different juice. BUT, you guys in this video tried some fruit that I never did. That cherimoya sounds amazing. Will have to try it next trip. Great video!!
Thank you for watching our video.. we appreciate it so much. That juice sounds so delicious. When we get back we will be sure to try it. Thanks again. 😊
Naranjilla is used mainly in juice, ice cream, Jelly's and added to other juices and dishes. The Babuco fruit skin and seeds are discarded, and the pulp are usually chopped into cubes and cooked with sugar and cinnamon.
Some fruits are better in juice, yogurt, or milkshake like the tomate, guanabana, maracuya, naranjilla, also you can combine naranjilla with dried bark strips of cinamon and sugar in hot water and if you like it some alcohol in it to make the drink canelaso
We have had it in Canelazo. I think that is about it. But it is nice to know now how to properly use it. Thank you for the tip and thank you for watching ❤
God, I was born in an Asian tropical country and I thought we have everything in terms of fruits and vegetables … wow! When I marched through the Ecuadorean markets … wow !! I was blown that what I’ve seen in my earlier days were nothing compared to what are sold here …
There is soooo many. I love to cook. I should really go find 1-2 fruits and veggies that I have no idea about and make a recipe for them. That will totally keep me busy.😊😊. We want to visit all the Asian countries too. I love jackfruit..I'm really interested in how different the flavor will be there compared to the states. Thank you for watching..we appreciate your support ❤. Have a wonderful day
Do not peal the pitahaya. Just chop it in half and eat the pulp with a spoon. It's easier that way. Also, red pitahaya has LESS sugar compared to the yellow one. 😂
I learned that about the pink and yellow pitahaya. That's how I usually eat it.. almost like a kiwi. Thanks for the info and watching the video.. we appreciate it. Have a great day
Hi Eric and Sandy! This was a fun video to watch! Hubby and I are moving to Cuenda in Spring 2024 and are coming down inin mid-November for 3 weeks. Going to the mercardo and having a fruit tasting evening sounds like a great thing to to do!! You mentioned looking up how to cut some fruit and what parts to eat, so that will be something we will have to remember to do! You two looked like you were having such a fun time....I know we will have fun too! Thanks for sharing your gastronomic event with us!!
Thank you Kim❤ We had such a fun time just flying by the seats of our pants. We have been given several great tips on how each of the fruits we didn't really know about. Now I'm excited to use them the correct way. Maybe we'll bump into each other in November. If you see us, please say hi 👋 😊 . Thank you for watching and have a beautiful day❤
Thank you...I love the tree tomato in aji...I have never tried it in juice...next time I will, because it tasted pretty good by itself. Thank you for watching and have a beautiful day
Hola Eric and Sandy, thank you for sharing your videos, they are not only entertaining but educational. I love the experience of buying fresh fish, squid or lobster right out of the fisherman canoes in the coastal region of Ecuador, or tasting organic fruits and vegetables all over the country. You may like to ask in the mercado or your ecuadorian neighbor the best way to eat or prepare them. For example naranjilla can be prepare in cold or hot beverages, guayabas are best eaten with the skin like you would apples, granadilla, maracuya or pitaya that have a gelatin like texture with small seeds are supposed to be swallowed avoiding to chew on the seeds, chirimoyas are better off when very ripe and tender enough to the touch. I hope you continue to enjoy your adventure in my small but diverse country !
Thank you very much. I love your tip of asking the person at the mercado how to eat or use an item if we don't know. I'm usually very inquisitive and ask questions all the time. I think I get too excited every time we go into the mercado that i forget how to use my brain sometimes 😆😆 It's one of my favorite places. Thank you for the wonderful tip..I will be using it all the time now. We love your beautiful country, thank you very much for sharing such a beautiful little piece of heaven ❤.
OK, are you sitting down ??? !!!! Went to co-op, yesterday. Bought 1- Dragon fruit (had yellow and red) bought yellow. Quantity one: $6.99 ea. /from Ecuador. Says PITANOVA Ecuador. yep, $6.99 ea. Havent eaten it yet.
I hear ya...it's crazy how much the mark up is in the states. In SC I paid almost 8.00 for a pink one..NUTS. Most here are 1.00 for one and the cheapest I've paid is 3 for 1.00. The yellow ones are so much sweeter...good choice. I can't wait for you to taste the difference from fruits there compared to fruits here. Mind blowing.
Hello friends, greetings from Cuenca-Ecuador. Tomate de árbol, naranjilla and maracuyá are used to make juices or smoothies. Sweet cucumber and guayaba are usually eaten with the peel, especially the guayaba. Try the famous espumilla, it is normally made from guayaba and mandarina, it is advisable to remove the peel with your hand, it is soft.
I've seen some of these at the markets in Loja a number of years ago, but never tired any of them. I was hilarious watching and listening to you both - especially Eric. Thanks for trying and sharing.
We had such a great time trying all of the fruits. I also was given a lot of ideas on how to use the ones we didn't know anything about. Can't wait to try it all these new recipes. Thank you for watching... have a beautiful day
Hola, the pitajaya will send you to the bathroom very tastes, the big yellow one is babaco is for cooking colada morada, the sweet tomato is for juices and for salsa, the naranjilla is for juices and also for cooking to make stews very yummy. The red banana is for frying . The pasion fruit is excellent for shakes, icream and cakes. Good video thank you.
Thank you for all the tips. Now I want to go and get them to use them the right way. Do you fry the red banana like you would a plantain? I love colada morada..we tried it last year and it was delicious 😋. I love to bake...passionfruit is my favorite...so there will be a cake in the near future. Thank you so much again for all the great tips. Thank you for watching..we appreciate you very much
great video. as a burn survivor im starting to do my homework on cities to go to escape these 100 plus texas days during the summer. i think im already in love with cuenca
Thank you. I hear you on that awful weather. I lived in AZ for a long while and 120+ is just not my cup of tea.. we fell in love with the weather of Cuenca, just readingabout it..springtime all year round. When we visited the first time we fell in love with everything about Ecuador... the beauty of the people and the country...the food and the weather. You need to visit... I'm sure you will love it too. Thanks for watching
La maracuya igual jugos se prepara con agua , azúcar... batidora después hielo. También se puede comer así, pero hay que hay que estar acostumbrado a sabor ácido. 👁🎼🐟👣🙏🏽🐾🤲🏽
Just found your channel. I'm from NC, just across the SC line, near Gaffney. Lived/worked in Easley for about 2 years. Love the Greenville area. Now I'm going to be moving to Ecuador as well, likely late next year. Look forward to seeing your videos.
We're living on the edge with the fruit. I should have researched all of them to see if we could eat them raw or how they're prepared..but we just jumped in.😆😆
Trying the fruits looked like so much fun. There's few things better than fresh food. Some edible seeds, some not edible would make it harder to figure out how to eat some of those fruits. Thank you for the wonderful taste test adventure.
We really didn't know how to eat half of them...but it was sure fun trying. And all the comments on how you're suppose to have them prepared is now making me want to try them the correct way😊😊😊
What a great video. I’ve seen these fruits in the Mercado but wasn’t sure how to eat them. Really really enjoyed your show and tell. That papaya looked super good and the dragon fruit. I love how you go into the descriptions of the flavors, true foodies! Trying to put our butts in gear to get down there ASAP. The first thing I’ll do is get some of these fruits. Which Mercado did you go to? Thanks again for your very entertaining and informative videos!
Thank you, thank you. It was so much fun trying things we had no clue about...a couple were a little scary to try but totally worth it. We got everything at 10 de Agosto. I usually get most of my fruit from the lady downstairs...I think her name was Louisa?? Thank you so much for watching and I can't wait for you guys to get here.
Thank you for all of the great information...we didn't know how to eat half of them..but it was fun trying. Thank you for watching. Have a beautiful day. 💖
The yellow dragonfruit is usually much sweeter than the red. I cut my dragon fruit in half down the center after trimming off the ends then cut in quarters which makes it easier to peel. Also don't eat a lot at a time unless you need to make numerous bathroom breaks as it's a really good natural laxative! ;-)
I love dragonfruit...and I learned the latter the hard way... 😆😆 straight up fiber fruit😄😄 I used to make my smoothie bowls with it in the states..but the frozen pink ones...no flavor😔
We chose Ecuador for the weather when we were researching it..but when we visited for the first time we fell in love with the people, the city and the beauty. Cost of living is pretty much how much someone's budget is...you can find places to live anywhere from 300.00 a month up to 1400.00 a month. Utilities aren't that much in Cuenca because you don't need heating or air con. Food is very very reasonable. So it just depends on the person.
Few of your fruits aren't ripe enough !! Tomate de arbol, babaco, maracuya, naranjilla ... some are also better in juice because they're super tart to eat as is. I love your reviews !! Thanks for sharing :)
We were winging it. 😆. I was going to research how to eat and prepare all of them.. but that went out the window😂 Thanks for the tips and thank you so much for watching. Have a wonderful day❤
Great video. My wife's taste buds are very similar to Eric's and mine are more in line with Sandys. We are going to do a fruit tour as well. Hope we enjoy it as much as you guys did. Will be in Cuenca the end of October. My wife and I would like to meet up if you are interested?
I've never tasted a better pitahaya than in Ecuador... now I'm wanting to visit Palora. Yay...another place to visit. I can't wait. Thank you for the information 🥰
Thanks Jan!! We'll go eat papaya. I think it probably stems on what we ate growing up... I'm a west coast kid and he's an east coast kid. Thanks again for watching and have a beautiful day
You better keep an eye on those. One of them looked like that pod in ALIEN!😮 Fantastic review. I'll be trying some of the ones that don't taste like butt. Not that I know... Thanks!❤
Hey guys! Hoping to move to Vilcabamba in early 2024 from the USA. Loving seeing so many great videos from expats like yourselves! So helpful :-) Please make more shopping videos but as you are browsing, stop and take a sec to let us know the cost of the items. Its always fascinating lol. Pitaya might send ya to the potty if you eat too much, but the Native Americans knew they "made mens hearts strong" which recent studies are showing they help prevent heart attacks and heart muscle inflammation responsible for heart disease, which is the number one killer of women! Not sure how the medicinal properties change between the pink skin white flesh, the pink flesh, and the sweeter yellow skin. Would be interesting to see side by side lab reports! What made you guys decide on Cuenca instead of Vilcabamba or Malcatos?? I cant do Cuenca because of the elevation. But im really looking forward to going for day trips to shop and eat lol. What is the number one food product that you miss from the USA?
We chose Cuenca because of the spring-like weather all year long. The hospitality and kindness of the locals. Also we didn't want to have to buy a car and it is extremely walkable and they have great public transportation options. They have an airport which makes it easy to travel to and from the country and the city. They have very good health care in their city. The city itself is a beautiful unesco world heritage site. And there's always something to do. There's no food that we miss back in the states. The quality of the food we feel is better here in Ecuador. And Cuenca itself has incredible dining experiences. From dollar street food to fine dining, they have it all. Thanks for watching and have a great one!
Thanks for the videos! 😊😊 We are thinking of visiting Cuenca, but there is some concerns about safety circling. It is a city, so common sense needs to prevail, but overall would you say things are safe and the drama elsewhere in Ecuador isn’t an issue in Cuenca? Thanks for your thoughts!
You are welcome...thank you for watching. You are correct with the common sense. You have to be mindful in any city, in any country. We feel safe here.
nice video! if you wanna try more crazy fruit in Ecuador we got you covered in the amazon jungle! haha there are many more interesting fruits in other places in Ecuador too :)
Talking to naturpathic Doc, told him moving to Ecuador. Concerned: I'm a salad head(love salads) and people say "dont eat the salad. You'll get sick." He said , "EAT a half a teaspoon to a teaspoon of papaya seeds a day, at least 2 or 3 x a week to prevent parasites. Cool eh ???
I knew about the papaya seeds from eating raw for a little over a year. That's probably why I like papaya more than Eric😁😁. I eat salad here and have never had a problem. You just have to clean all your fruits and veggies..I use either the salt bath, the vinegar bath or a little of both. Then you rinse afterwards and let dry. I think the tablecloth was my first purchased thing for our apartment. Thank you..I love it too😍😍 Can't wait til you get out here
I eat salads all the time. And of course you can prepare your own veggies, or simply do as I do which is buy the prewashed lettuce or salads in bags. And of course cuenca has drinkable water so do salt water soak and then rinse Best thing is to eat very careful for two weeks then add stuff. I drank bottle water for several weeks in cuenca before even use for coffee
Hay frutas que son muy ácidas y solamente se les prepara para jugo! No todas las frutas se las comen con cuchara. Ay Gringos que no entienden a nuestros países Latinoamericanos jejeje!
Wow...thank you about the pineapple...I would have never known it had to be transparent. Now I'm going to go get a ripe pineapple. Thank you for teaching me about all of the fruit❤
Those pink dragon fruit never has flavor. I've tried them from a couple of countries and various ripeness. That babaco is absolutely nasty. You are right about that, Eric. I'm glad to see info about uvillas, it sounds like something I'd like. Also have to go back about one other, pepina I think I'll try You are also correct about papaya. The worst thing
Yep...pink dragonfruit in the states have no flavor too. The uvillas were so good..I found some in the states and of course they taste 100 times better in Ecuador. The pepina has a very refreshing taste. Baby papaya is sooo good and sweet. Yummmm. You'll have to try the baby ones here..they may change your mind. 😋😋
Guys, even though I enjoyed seeing you discovering the fruits of my country, please seek advice about how to eat them. Lol, it's been a punishment seeing you not eating the good parts of them😂😂
We have tuna in the states. I used to make jelly and syrups with it. It was the only thing we picked that I knew wasn't ripe. Thank you about the guayaba. What color does the guayaba turn when it is ripe?
I thought there was a small banana that may be pink and taste like cotton candy.....don't let it be true. I would try all of those fruit.....with booze. .Did you not ask the vendor how to eat these fruit, like the seeds or skin ect or was this a wing it moment? You risk takers. and papaya does taste like butt.
I know in the states there are grapes that taste like cotton candy. I don't know how they make them but I've had them before and it's crazy. Cotton candy flavor. I think all the fruits we tasted would make great alcoholic drinks...yummm. We totally are risk takers..😆😆😆. Didn't ask the vendors nothing..I should have. I wanted to research how to eat them but we threw that idea out the window. 😂. Papaya is so much better here....No butts ..😁😁 Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a great day. Talk to you soon.
I've had the cotton candy grapes as well. Too sweet. I might have seen them here but in a supermaxi probably. The small banana I thought would taste like apples a bit because Guatemala has a small one called manzana banana if I recall and they don't taste like Ecuadorian ones. I just like the small banana size
Yes..enjoy all the fresh fruits..etc...🇪🇨
Yumm😋

Some fruits are better in juice, yogurt, or milkshake like the tomate, guanabana, maracuya, naranjilla, also you can combine naranjilla with dried bark strips of cinamon and sugar in hot water and if you like it some alcohol in it to make the drink canelaso

Naranjilla is acidic is used in juices
We have had it in Canelazo. I think that is about it. But it is nice to know now how to properly use it. Thank you for the tip and thank you for watching ❤

El tomate de árbol es para hacer batidos o jugo... en la batidora. Así solo es muy fuerte el sabor , también hay que ver la maduración.🎼🐟👣🤲🏽🙏🏽🐾🐾
I haven't tried tree tomato in a juice or smoothie yet but I do love it in aji. Now I can't wait to have one in a smoothie. Thank you so much.
Maracuyá is for juice (pasión fruit)
Maracuyá is one of my favorites. I love it in aji, juices and drinks 🍸 😍 Thank you for watching and for all the great information you have given us.
Red banana needs to be cooked. Small banana is called orito.😊
Thank you very much. Thank you for watching.

Awesome video!! I had those orange gooseberry fruits in a salad somewhere and DELISH !
We did too first time at Softy's Glocal. I had to ask what they were. We still have a bag of them covered in pacari chocolate.
Yummmm
Thank you so much! They are soooo good. I'm stoked you can get that whole bag for 1.00. It's like candy..but better

I always get the small banana for fruit salads for one person you can use the whole thing.
With granadilla you’re not supposed to chew on the seeds, only swallow them
Thank you for the tip. Good to know for the next time I try it.
La naranjilla igual que el tomate de árbol es solo para jugos o batidos 🐾🙏🏽👣👣🐟🎼👁

Thanks, Mad. help appreciated.....
Can you tell us in one of your videos why you choose Ecuador and give us information about cost of living
And are permanent residents
Thank you
We chose Ecuador for the weather when we were researching it..but when we visited for the first time we fell in love with the people, the city and the beauty.
I never ate babaco, naranjilla, tomate de arbol and others like normal fruits, only in juices.
@@pablochavez8620 I once was served a big slice of ripe babaco with 'miel de panela' on top, not bad at all.
Good to know...thank you
We were winging it. 😆. I was going to research how to eat and prepare all of them.. but that went out the window😂 Thanks for the tips and thank you so much for watching. Have a wonderful day❤
@@ericandsandy thanks for your videos. It remember me my country.
You have to make a video preparing Ecuadorian juices… it will be fine.
Great video. My wife's taste buds are very similar to Eric's and mine are more in line with Sandys. We are going to do a fruit tour as well. Hope we enjoy it as much as you guys did. Will be in Cuenca the end of October. My wife and I would like to meet up if you are interested?
That sounds perfect. We would love to meet up. Safe travels. See you in October
@@ericandsandy ☕
la naranjilla es para hacer jugos.,helados ,postres y demás no se come solo es muy hacido
Eso lo recuerdo de ver a alguien hacer canelazo. siempre cocina 😋 muchas gracias
Delicioso todo 😋 my favorite fruit is guaba, but I also love passion fruit
Mine too! Plus the papaya.
4:19 pitahaya or dragon fruit, Ecuador produces very good pitahaya in Palora
I've never tasted a better pitahaya than in Ecuador... now I'm wanting to visit Palora. Yay...another place to visit. I can't wait. Thank you for the information 🥰
Interesting to see the differences in your taste preferences. My own tracks closer to Sandy’s. Fun video.
Thanks!❤
😆😆😆😆😆 no if, ands or "butts" about it
You miss mangoes. Sadly, it's not the season yet, so Octuber or September. There are different kind of mangoes in Ecuador.
I L❤VE mangoes
Tomate de árbol needs cooking or in Juice
I love tomate de árbol aji... it's my favorite
I live in Tennessee, was wondering how long have you been in Ecuador?
Hi neighbor. We have been here for 4 months
Papaya tastes like butt! lol. Maybe because you know it's a "digestive aid"?
🤣🤣🤣🤣. So true!! On the digestive aid...but it really was one of the sweetest papayas I've ever had
The granadilla is not passion fruit. They passion fruit is maracuyá.
Yes, thank you. Someone told me the Granadilla is like a sister of the passionfruit only sweeter. Thank you for watching and have a beautiful day. 💖
La guanábana es una delicia, van a tener problemas con la pitajaya, no se porque nadie les informó al respecto..
Guanabana is my favorite!!! I know about pitahaya being very high in fiber. I used to eat a lot of it in my smoothie bowls in the states
Hay unas frutas que solo son buenas en batidos o jugos ya sean con leche o agua...jajaja como por ejemplo el tomate de árbol. Saludos y buen video.
Thank you...we were very adventurous trying fruit we didn't know about the preparation. 😆😆 Thank you for watching and have a beautiful day
We are looking at moving to Vilcabamba area as well, Cuenca was out for us just because we are country folks.
100% agree re: papaya butt smell & taste. 😂🤣
Hahahaha😆😆😆. But seriously the baby papaya has a much better flavor and sweeter than the big ones I've ever tasted in the states.
Thanks for the videos! 😊😊
We are thinking of visiting Cuenca, but there is some concerns about safety circling.
We feel safe here.
nice video!
if you wanna try more crazy fruit in Ecuador we got you covered in the amazon jungle! haha
there are many more interesting fruits in other places in Ecuador too :)
Thank you.. we can't wait to go when we get back and try everything.
Cool eh ???
Great show and tell !!!! and love the table cloth too! 🙂Of course, love you guys.
And of course cuenca has drinkable water so do salt water soak and then rinse
Best thing is to eat very careful for two weeks then add stuff. I drank bottle water for several weeks in cuenca before even use for coffee
Babaco and naranjilla must be eaten cooked…..boiled.
Naranjilla and taxo are for juice.
Babaco boiled with sugar or honey
Thank you so much. Next time I get a babaco I will make it that way. Sounds delicious 😋.
Hay frutas que son muy ácidas y solamente se les prepara para jugo! No todas las frutas se las comen con cuchara. Ay Gringos que no entienden a nuestros países Latinoamericanos jejeje!
😆😆🤣🤣🤣. I only researched how to eat a couple different ones that I didn't know about. We felt very adventurous and just jumped into the unknown. 😆😆😆
The pink one is a bland neutral taste.
I agree
Pinaple (Ecuadorian) must be eaten mature, no green.
I LOVE pineapple. Thank you
@@ericandsandy
😊😊😊😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻….Ecuador pineapple from “MILAGRO city” are the best, but must be eaten when the pulp is transparent
Also have to go back about one other, pepina I think I'll try
You are also correct about papaya.
Go out on your terrace and spit the seeds - like a watermelon!
😆😆
Some of the fruits if you don't prepare right and eat it raw it would taste bitter or not ripe
Thank you. And, thank you for watching. Have a great day
Guys, even though I enjoyed seeing you discovering the fruits of my country, please seek advice about how to eat them. Lol, it's been a punishment seeing you not eating the good parts of them😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣 It was our first time and I only researched a couple. But it was so much fun just figuring it out. Thanks for watching. Have a great day
This milk is sour taste it 😂!
Haha...that's probably my first go to....does this taste ok???😆😆
Tuna and guayaba…..must be eaten no green
We have tuna in the states. I used to make jelly and syrups with it. It was the only thing we picked that I knew wasn't ripe. Thank you about the guayaba. What color does the guayaba turn when it is ripe?
@@ericandsandy
Yellow…..color yellow …..ready to eat……but is better the “dulce de membrillo “……this is from guayaba…..😊😊😊😊😊😊……take care fellows
Thank you. 😊😊
Ten Diego? Really? If you're going to live in Cuenca, use the correct names, in Spanish. Diez de Agosto.
😁👍
