    I wish you could have heard me echo, out loud, "to be fair."
    The Yaesu FT. -817 ND was my first HF rig, and those little QRP rigs pull the special place in my heart. I do truly believe that they have very good transmit audio modulation which helps make them more readable even with QRP power levels. For SSB, the add-on filters are not nearly as critical. And for portable operation, DSP simply isn't necessary.
    Congrats on the new rig, and I'm glad that antenna is working well for you.

    Now you know the love that is had for the FT 817/818 radio. I have used TenTennas, K6ARK, BuddieStick and ham stick antennas with this radio and the performance has always been great. It does digital, pairs great with the DigiRig. It's full mode all the way up to 70cm. Portable satellite operators use two 817/818s for full duplex on FM and SSB. Yes, now you know the love of the radio, welcome to the 817/818.

    Mike, love your video on the 818. I have way too many radios and yet the 818 remains one of my all time favorites. There was nothing like it when it came out and there really hasn't been a direct competitor in that for factor for 20 years. Quick story. I met Peter Schutz at a conference. He was the CEO of Porsche and rescued the company which was heading down hill in the 80's. He told me when he took over the engineers recommended killing off the 911. They said it ran its course. He did his own research with customers, racing teams etc. He believed it was an iconic form factor and challenged the engineers to make the 911 work. EVOLVE THE CAR rather than kill it. They did and in so doing also saved the company. Whether it's a 1965 911 or a 2022 911 you know it's a 911 but they are vastly different performers. IMHO Yaesu has a great opportunity to do the same with the FT-818. Don't try to come up with an expensive 705 killer (I own a 705 too) but rather EVOLVE the 818 to a more modern radio in the same rugged form factor. It's a rugged, reliable radio in a great form factor and many are sad to see it retired. Sorry for the long note. 73, Paul

    I have an 817 I bought used a few months ago right before I passed my tech exam. Got it from a guy in the local club. One of the other guys in the club tried to talk me out of it. I blew his mind when he found out I made a couple 2000+ mile contacts on QRP for my first QSO's during a DX contest weekend. A good antenna and good conditions make all the difference.

    I agree with your assessment about the power cord. I did the same thing - I cut the power cord in half, and put power poles on both sides. It definitely works for me. Good choice getting the FT-818nd. I absolutely love mine! BTW, 6 watts - no indicator; 5 watts - 2 bars; 2.5 watts - 1 bar. DE K7RLN

    • @JonathanKayne
      @JonathanKayne ปีที่แล้ว

      Something to add is that if you install the windcamp power pole adapter the radio will always think it's got external power connected. There is a resistor across the terminal that gets disconnected when a cable is plugged in.

    • @JonathanKayne
      @JonathanKayne ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hamradiotube yep. I don't know how that affects current draw but you can see this if you have the backlight set to turn off after a delay. On external power it stays on so whenever I hook up the cable that happens.
      Also if you have the internal battery installed it will apparently deplete within a few days. That's why those windcamp batteries are useful since they have a cutoff switch.

    I've been singing the praises of the FT-817ND for years. Glad to see you've discovered how good they are, too. Like you, I ordered the '818 when I heard they were being discontinued. I managed to get the very last one from RadioWorld, up here in Canada. It's sitting in its box, as yet unopened, as my '817ND is still in tip top shape. I'm thinking of shipping the '817 off to my brother, though, so I can give the new '818 the love it deserves. I have a 300 Hz CW filter I bought years ago to install in it. Ivan VE7IVN

    As one who has replaced their 817 finals once and finals for someone else, don't ever do a tune cycle at full power. When the tuner ratchets through looking for a match, it goes through horrible mis-matches several times a second and you can pop your finals.
    My Z11-pro tuner can tune at half a watt, so I drop my 817 down all the way to do the tune and protect the finals. Once tuned, crank her back up.

    Nice video Mike, and it very much reflects the experience I've had with my 817nd. I can't see me replacing the 817nd any time soon, it's just too all-round useful. Looked at the 705 but I don't think it offers enough for the extra money. A popular accessory for the 817/818 is a little speech processor that goes between the mic and the rig, well worth having. The power connector....I fitted a Power Pole adapter on my 817nd but subsequently removed it, partly because the internal battery was self-discharging with it fitted, also because the original little barrel connector also fits my FT-70D and FT-60 and Yaesu sell a power lead with a cigarette lighter plug that I can use for all three radios.
    All the best, keep up the good work! 73, Simon G0CIQ

    I bought one to work linear birds along with an sdr. My 991a was a little much for portable. I wasn't going to buy it as a one trick pony so I turned the power on the 991a down to check out a little qrp and I was hooked. I love that little rig. I've hunted you with it. I live near the coast in Fl. I've had qso's on that rig 6w and an end fed from Nova Scotia to Puerto Rico on the east coast. Pretty much all of the central US on 20m and Portland Or. on 10m. Some DX, Slovak Republic, Austria, Poland, Spain, Canary Islands, Netherlands and Norway. (have to love when 10 and 15 are open). Down side is crowded bands with no filter. Enjoy that little jewel. 73 de KN4ZAA

    Mike- I just ran across your channel. I’m impressed with some of the distant contacts you were getting with 5w out of the 818. I got my General a few months ago and I’m looking for a lightweight HF rig to do Potas and Sotas.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. The 818 is certainly a good radio for that. They just became discontinued but you should be able to find them on the used market. Depending on your budget and how much weight you feel like hiking up a mountain, the Icom IC-705 is a fantastic radio. Definitely my favorite QRP Radio. The Xiegu X5105 is another great one. The Xiegu 6100 is another one. I didn't really like it, in fact I gave it a pretty poor review but there are guys who like it. I would say be very cautious of that radio though. Elecraft KX2 or KX3 would be another good option. All of these radios are small, light weight, and have an internal battery, which I would think would be pretty important for SOTA. POTA I find folks more willing to carry a bit of weight as you're generally not going that far compared to a SOTA. I also like the Xiegu G90, but it is a bit heavier and doesn't have an internal battery. If you want to go really light weight you can check out the Mountain Topper radios, but they are CW only. Hope that helps and thanks again for watching. Oh, and congrats on the General!! 73

    2:45 The only part of operating an 817 missing from this snippet is "why do the damned menus disappear so freaking fast?!" 😅 (I love my 817, but the menus kill me every time.)

    I like that you like it, but if you want torture, try using it when there are a lot of powerful stations close together. Say for instance the Winter or summer Field Days or any phone contest of importance. That's when those things that the 817/818 lack will wear on you. In the meantime, get the mic compressor. You will be glad you did.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't need field day. I have POTA. Every day is field day. But you're not wrong. Getting QRM'd is something you just have to deal with sometimes when QRP. Sometimes other stations simply can't hear you. Field day would really suck with the 818 though as there are no filters at all to narrow your bandwidth.
