I took this free trolley a few weeks ago, visiting the Boston area. It's old fashioned but works just fine, and it's really a rail/trail, because a trail runs along side it for a good part of the line. I live in Santa Cruz County in California, where we had a demo of a Tig-M, an electric trolley, last fall, that runs itself, no need for overhead wires. This is what we could use: a rail and trail, like this.
These PCCs will be still here for some time. At least until the MBTA decides whether or not the Type 9s from the Green Line will be transferred to the Mattapan Line to replace the PCCs (or completely new rolling stock).

How do you request the trolley to stop if you need to get off at a station that no one is standing at?

One of them sounded similar to the Green line Type 8
The propulsion electronics on one of the units (3265) sound slightly different. Was that unit the one they just finished overhauling?

Are they retrofitting the throttle controllers off of the Breda type 8’s onto the PCC’s
what stupid rule is that a tram always has priority and other traffic must stop and not the other way around
