New to dirted tank. Same condition escaped gas pushed thru letting dirt up.. semi cloudy. Havent put fish in it because of being dirty. Hoping it would settle rather than redo.. but going to stock low amount since you claim it wont hurt fish. It made the tds go into 500 ppm range.

If it's newly dirted. I'd test it just to make sure there's isn't ammonia in your water column. Usually gas pockets erupting is due to ammoniacal nitrogen and a layer of sand that was too thin. My mess happened from years of uprooting plants.
That dirt was nearly 2yrs old. Aged dirt is no more harmful to fish than the dirt at the bottom of lakes and ponds are.
The dirt will settle and you can add another layer of sand without removing anything.
      Thanks for watching 🤙

I will not claim to be an expert in dirted tanks, but what I am seeing is that upon planting, you seem to be digging the holes for the dirt to come up into. This then escalates because the fish will do their darndest to assist it as there are mucho mucho nutrients down there. Correct me if I am wrong tho .... I am here to learn.

That can most certainly create issues. I've done it before. For this tank I just simply slid sand over the roots. They find their own way down to the dirt. Thanks for watching my friend 🤙

Great video. That answers some questions I had about my dirted tank. I put the organic soil in mesh bags when I set up the tank because I wanted it contained to the back half of the tank. I have val in the back and will just use anubius in the front half.
I was wondering at what point I might have to start adding nutrients to the soil and how I would do it.

Hello Angie! With dirt, I'll leave it alone for year before spiking it with ferts.
They don't need to go in your mesh bag of dirt, tweezer them in near it.
I'd love to see how it looks! I could've easy added some hills with some mesh bags of pebbles!
      I'm redoing this tank 😅

@@yourtap great thanks. I did use the mesh bags to slope the back up. I planted just 12 or 13 Italian Val plants in the sand over the mesh. 6 months later I have probably 60 plants or more.
Only a few are growing tall so far most are putting their energy into multiplying.

I made the mistake of not adding a big enough sand layer in my 55. Some time after I had to go in and add more. Easy mistake to make. Awesome video D. Really enjoyed the epic music

I've tried a dirted tank with sand and my main issue is a few plants will die, pull them up to learn entire root base rotted & black.
Noticed black areas in samd substrate front glass where i can see. I only put dirt in back half of tank, so its not the dirt causing this issue. I think its the actual sand. Maybe its a too fine if sand. But same issues if i use playsand, beach sand or another sand ised for mixing with concrete etc.
I may ditch sand & go with small pebbles, gravel instead.

For dirted tank with sand caps, if there's any need to add iron root tabs time to time for heavy iron demanding plants like vals, sag, crypts and swords, will it eventually disturb the sand and dirt layer resulting in both getting mixed?

    • @yourtap
      @yourtap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Unless you're pushing them in there with a weed Wacker that shouldn't create an issue for you. 🤣
I didn't keep up with my Val and they cling onto dirt like a claw machine.
I'd be pulling a dozen or so out every few months and That's the result.

Great Friday to you and I really think you should try my way to add sand to your tanks. It was a few years ago when I got back into fish & of course plants 🌿 too , I was going to look around for some deals @ PETCO on Black Friday coming up on 4 years ago and the short version of having a Betta fish given to me from the owners wife @ QUALITY AQUATICS and the reason for the awesome gesture was when I got there just in time for my 1st visit .... I had a few Norwegian chocolate bars that I grabbed before visiting my Mom and I felt like it was a very long day for her and her expression was very appreciated and she came over to me as I was walking out and said I saw you looking at the Bettas and I would like to give you whichever one you want 💙!!!! So I got back into fish and plants in a pretty awesome way, needed a few supplies and away I cruised back to PETCO with my Bettas inside my winter jacket and I got him a 10 gallon AQUEON ASCENT and away we went . Had 2 pieces of pie and the homemade whipping cream . Oh man I love the feast & the leftover cold turkey sandwich is seriously calling me but I have been @ it every day since and I really don't know if it would have happened had I not stopped @ Ingebretson Scandinavian meat and gift shop .
So I will get you the best way to replace your sand and I use the tube for gravel cleaning and I know that you have said you never clean your substrate but it works amazingly good and very precise with the bucket of cleaned sand and it has to still.have some moisture in it to get it packed nice and tight and when you are trying it out you can make a steady pour and not create any cloudiness 🍫
