Semi Hits our RV - Caught On Camera! | Baja 2024

  • Passing semi-trucks in Baja can feel like playing chicken. What happened to us in Baja could happen to you if you have a large RV. Nobody was hurt, but the the video cameras on the RV were rolling as a semi-truck passed too close. There are many rough stretches of highway throughout Baja that are very narrow with absolutely no shoulder. Semi trucks and large motorhomes (like ours) fill the entire lane. So passing each other on these narrow highways can be very nerve racking as you can see.

    Some of these truck drivers nowadays are out of control. For the most part, the professional drivers of 30+ years ago are long gone now, we have Third World country drivers who just don’t give a crap. What also should scare you is the fact that you’re sitting right in front of your windshield with no protection whatsoever.

    I have similar Velvac mirrors on my motorhome and purchased two new ones a couple of years ago because the chrome finish was coming off. They are pretty proud of them, I think I paid $700+ for each side. You can probably get just the head for $300 or so. I bought mine from Pacific RV mirrors, which I believe is in Arizona, you might check them out if you pass through there on the way home.

    I just drive down to La Paz with a 40’ plus a 28’ enclosed trailer and same I had to have a piece of mirror cut to be glued in Guerrero Negro .😊
    It happened in the rough patch before Guerrero Negro going south at 10 mph the left front wheel drop in a hole and the rv tilt and my mirror was broken 😡

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah. That stretch was really rough (super slow) when we came back north last month. Hope they can patch it up before next winter. Luckily we left really early in the AM from Guerrero Negro and managed to get through OK. Heard stories from others about broken suspensions and the like. Still haven't fixed/replaced my mirror. I wish I had the missing piece :)

    We have a 2005 Adventurer. On Labor Day in 3 lanes of traffic with a semi on my left we encountered a semi pulled off on the right but not far enough to accommodate a semi-size vehicle. We took out his left mirror with our right mirror.

    The problem with the Baha highways is there are no shoulders. The pavement just drops off and if you do go off the pavement there's a good chance you are going to roll over.
    Nobody wants to give an inch, that's why you have these mishaps.
    Drive slow and careful.

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup. Pretty much sums it up :) All of those highways are raised up. We get used to feeling the shrubs and markers on the side to know where we are. Thank goodness I also have dually rear axle (at least one tire will be on the road).

  • @thomassmith2239

    I've had my mirror hit twice on the passenger side of our pusher by passing truck drivers. Hard to place blame in that situation but I am very careful to maintain my lane. Once was at night while I was moving the RV by myself and I had no way of safely changing lanes so was very stressful. Both times I was able to eventually get pulled over and fix my mirror with no permanent damage.

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agree. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often, but we've all seen trucks passing with no mirror :) Most truck drivers seem very careful. This year our close calls were mostly with fellow RVers (trailers mostly) dancing around their lane.

    I guess there’s never a dull moment. My 2001 Beaver Marquis was hit twice last year. Lady side swiped it in her pickup and scratched 20’ plus feet through four colors. That was about $8,000.00.
    A dump truck took off my passenger mirror and camera. The good thing was he was being pulled over by California Highway Patrol for an uncovered load and I had a great witness and didn’t even have to call 911. 🤣🤣
    That was another $2700.00 in damages. Hopefully, I can keep people from hitting it this year. I did install a new four camera system that records all the time to protect myself.
    Enjoy your trip.

    Similar thing happened to us a couple of years ago travelling south on Hwy 5 in Oregon in our Class A Safari Trek. We were in the middle of 3 lanes going about 58 mph and an 18-wheeler decided to pass us on the Right side instead of the left. The back end of his trailer knocked off our rear view mirror and he kept going. He knew he hit us because he sped up and kept changing lanes when we started following him. My wife called 911 while I tried to keep up with him, as we were unable to get his license number. Finally, after about 20 minutes, the police intercepted him and pulled him over. The truck driver said he didn't even know he it us. But we were able to get his insurance information and the settlement did cover the damaged siding and mirror. We had another hit and run incident in the back of Costco in Medford where we believe a delivery truck backed into our left rear quarter panel and dented it. We had to pay for that ourselves. Enjoy your videos. Stay safe!
