Hey Joe Jimi Hendrix Guitar Lesson is my first free online guitar lesson where I teach how to play a song that I love by Jimi Hendrix.
I have always been a huge fan of Jimi, and in this video I go through the song note for note as played by Jimi and all the techniques involved.

This is, hands down, the best Hey Joe tutorial on the internet. You go into the subtleties and then actually *explain* them to us too. Great teacher.
one of the most amazing things about the internet age is a guy like you just doing guitar lessons like this for the rest of us.
i don't think there are a lot of people who have more authority on the guitar subject than you. looking forward to the next video.
Thanks!
Even a hard core Les Paul guy like me LOVES the sound of that strat!
It has a really unique sound
Looks like 50’s strat or could be a perfect reissue or replica
I believe it’s a Nash
@@atreju2155 nothing like any of the 1000 jimi hendrix sounds.
Did you know jimi hendrix recordings playback slightly slow and that ruins the tones and makes it impossible for anyone to copy jimi hendrix?
You must be deaf and blind.
Computers play the tones in reverse order.
NO jimi hendrix equipment was used during this video.
No fender guitar was used either.
I can never get enough of the sound of the neck pickup on a strat!
You not only know how to play well, you know how to teach well. Showing things over and over is brilliant. You realize the student is trying to follow along and is thinking, "wait! how did that go?" Then you show it again several times. Don't have to rewind! Excellent. Thank you Tim!
I can’t believe this video is ten years old Tim! And you’re still going strong!
Jimi does that chromatic walk down behind his head in his live video, which I find just mind blowing! God, he was something to watch, let alone listen too ! TY Tim, your also one to be admired Sir,,, :)
awesome !!!! its not a classic and formal tutorial... its more like a reflexive approach of the song... a close view, you dont tell us how to play it, you tell us how you felt it your way and how to feel it our way... its not limiting us to play the way the song was written but rather inviting us to play it our way, with our own musical sense and feelings.... very rare on TH-cam, thanks Tim !!
you are the man! Awesome lesson. the guitar is so freakin' awesome!
how r u doin papa yur a great awsome player and teacher i learned a lot from u thankx buddy yur the man
brill
Wrong. Wrong and wrong.
NO jimi hendrix equipment was used during this video.
NO fender equipment was used during this video.
All jimi hendrix recordings are slow and out of tune.
65 guitarists can't tell jimi hendrix recordings are out of tune.
This is by far the best Jimi Hendrix song lesson on the web. Out of any teacher you made Hendrix make sense and you went through the materials at a fantastic paste that made the song easy to learn how to play. Thank you so much!
Hey Tim...I hope your well...? I've been playing guitar now for over 25 years on and off and just recently, and only recently i have begun to really take this seriously - the only reason i have done this is after watching this video. I have never heard so much passion, soul and tone in such a small amount of time. If i had never picked and played a guitar in my life this video would have made me want it more than anything. Hats off to you fella - very jealous but also very much inspired to become even 10% close to how and why you play like you do. Thank you Tim.
I predict by the end of the year, Tim will be theee #1 guitar guru on TH-cam. And deservedly so. Incredible wealth of knowledge far surpassing the others. The nuance is astounding. Plus, he's a super cool guy ! \m/
Thanks :)
Tim Pierce Guitar m best guitar teacher on TH-cam
, also like Tim Schwartz
Tone is amazing . Only one I've seen as good or better is pilky27.
How did that prediction turn out?
Wow. What a teacher. What a difference when you have someone who has actually done it (played guitar) for real for a living and not spent his life making videos. Such self assurance and no filler. Brilliant. Thank you.
and who's not a music snob
Tim, you really are great with your lessons and basically letting us in your house to see your setup and to explain everything you do. Your playing is so clean and amazing, it's easy to understand what you are doing. Also thanks for your website and your explanations there. It's so much fun just to wander through your website watching videos. Thank you Tim...
Thanks buddy!
I only just found you 3 days ago and I've been on TH-cam nonstop since. You're an amazing man and you're opening my eyes to many things I had not considered in the last 55 years I've been playing guitar. I have no rock speed, only some few blues riffs I've worked into my worship music over 45 years. I am so ready to get "unstuck " after I have been stimulated by your vision. Thank you!
Tim, you are a very good instructor, I stayed up for hours practicing last night. Very inspiring, good job!
Ulf, 55 Sweden
Unbelievable! The first time i try to play this is about 25 years ago.... without internet and with wrong tabulatures... after a very long abstinence of guitar i play again and it works with your‘e support!!! I get it after 20 minutes.... very happy to say that. Greetings from germany from a 40 years old rebeginner.
That is the coolest sounding strat I ever heard
Man you make it look easy Tim. Your the reason I've picked up my guitar after 24 years to give it another go! Thanks man.
Sir u r by far the best teacher teacher on utube Thank u and i know i owe u Richard from Pittsburgh, Pa.
Stuncard Richard Thanks Stuncard! :) #hey-joe
Can't express how nice it is to see a guitar virtuoso, studio musician/gear head not be a music snob. I love your aproach, amazing teaching and perfect song. I'm a fan, can't wait to deep dive.
Yeah he is one of the best, if not THE best, he has played with all the greats.
Ratherly good. Not just 'the notes' but a framework for adding extra-crunchy goodness to all this Jimi-Joe malarkey.
Massive thankyoolies Tim for bothering to share this. Utterly wonderful.
I personally sub the Major E at the 7th fret with the patented 'Hendrix Chord' (AKA 'E7#9' -whatever that means) which goes like this: (from bass E string) X7678X (You can even accidentally play the 'X strings as they're both E stringmybobs anyhoo - and nobody gonna blow noodles atcha. But it sounds best without.
Massive thanks. Kisses and hot lurve.
Thanks Tim. You're Awesome Brutha! You are a great player and a great teacher. I'm 64. I got my first guitar when I was 5 years old and I've been playing ever since. I've had several great mentors and teachers over the years. I really like your teaching style and I really appreciate having you for a reference for many of my favorite songs. Many Thanks and best wishes. Keep up the good work 😁
I will repost the video within 48 hours, the Hey Joe lead SOLO instructional video will be back on youtube momentarily . I wanted to change a couple of bits...:) Thanks, Tim
Best teacher on the internets. Ever.
Thanks for this I can fuckin strum it right now!!! You rock Tim!!!
Hello tim. I am a totally blind person and have played the guitar for over 40 years. I play cowboy chords and pound out a rythm. I have learned a lot more in the last three years from listening to your videos, thanks man, more than you know. I use a screen reader on this computer so have a tough time filling out the forms so I can get a message to you. Just learned all the hoops I have to jump threw to get this much done. Keep up the good work, I use the you tube links to listen to your lessons. Richard E Gwinn, picking hard and standing by for more great lessons.
Hey... TIM! You made my day! After 15 years I decided to play again, and your videos are really inspiring. Thanks, from Colombia.
Well done Tim. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Tim, Tim, Tim. Thanks again. Most great players are not great teachers. You are both. Lesson is clear, broken down perfectly, and just what I need for a audition for a band with a leader I really like. Danny
Gotta say Tim, you're pretty much the reason why I play guitar now! Gotta love this stuff!
Much Appreciated - Thanks!
i have been playing for aprox 37 years and my playing has just exploded in just 12 hours and two of your vids (i lost 2 finger tips fr a lawn mower around 30 yrs ago) and my pikie finger is paralized) but now i know where notes r and improvise w/slides n hammer ons,ur an unbelieveable teacher for me.right on! !!
The other song @ 11:26 Whole lotta love.
You are the best Tim, thank you so much for helping me to expand my knowledge with lead guitar. I am a retired old man and I have never enjoyed anything more. God bless always.
killer tone as allways
There have been so many great guitarists who have been of the "three finger" variety...almost never using the pinkey...great lesson once again Tim! We appreciate you brother!
No way does Tim realize how good he is at teaching guitar! Keep it up, buddy! This stuff is pure 24k gold!
Genuine Gentleman and genuine Genius .🎸❤️📝👍😌🏆
Just wanna say; I'm not a guitar player, but these videos just gives me sooo much. Thay make me happy, lift my spirit and in general just makes my day. Thanks...
Happy to hear it Tommy!
So awesome, thanks Tim.
Wow. I'm self taught and nowhere near being able to play this sort of stuff yet. I've always loved Hendrix, but never realized just how technical and improvised what he did was.
You make this seem extremely easy to say the least. Well done.
Thanks! #heyjoe
awesome lesson Tim - love your style of teaching.
Im dyslexic and normally struggle to get guitar lessons online but you explain them in a really intuitive and logical manner. Thanks for the videos!
Shumba1991 That's so great! Thanks and happy you like them :)
@ 11:33 It reminds you of Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love?
sacriledge
Jimmy page stole the riff from Hendrix. Then page stole the entire song of stairway to heaven from taurus.
I’m kidding
Fantastic lesson Tim! Your clear and calm approach is a pure joy.
Much appreciated! #hey-joe #guitar-lesson
Hey Tim; what pickups are you using on that strat? They sound noiseless (unless you are using a gate or something)
and I really like the tone.
You are an exceptional player, you just made me aware of just how good really Jimi was.
Excellent!!
Look at you 10 years ago! !! Thank you for your work and your lessens!
that one part sounds like "Whole lotta Love" by Led Zep
same notes
yeah, but hey joe was years before whole lotta love.
i really like the way you show how you do the notes , you are no doubt the best i have ever seen on here, when it comes to teaching , you dont spend a lot of time talking but more easy to follow than any i have seen. you are also the best at doing what you do,
I liked the nod to "Whole Lotta Love". It always makes me think of it too!
1st person who breaks down both solos of this song thank you so much
Excellent lesson Tim, thank's. I love your choice of songs to teach, every one has been brilliant, heavy and soulful. KEEP IT UP PLEASE.
Thanks Adrian!
Finally a lesson on this song that's close to the original track. You're a great teacher
WindOnMyWings Thanks! :) #hey-joe
Tim’s genuine appreciation for Hendrix’s nuances comes through in the lesson and makes the end result sound so much more authentic.
I also makes it far easier to learn because suddenly you are able to understand something that previously seemed so baffling.
👍👍👍
Thanks so much for this lesson. As a kid playing at the Cafe Wha I had the privilege
to see Jimmy audition for the night show playing Hey Joe. Needless to say he got the job and the rest is History.
Thanks so much for your time and energy.
Must have been amazing!
exelente !!
Eduardo Luis De Vito Thanks Eduardo! #hey-joe
gracias Edu.vos tocas igual con la mano izquierda?
Master of ALL styles...Bloody Legend!
Luke Bussey :) #hey-joe
Did you hook up all your tons of equipment by yourself or did you hire it done when you took out that million dollar loan for the studio...lol
By far the best lesson of ‘Hey Joe’ on TH-cam. Instant subscription my brother!
That is so cool! There are many ways to play Hendrix songs. Many lessons on TH-cam by lots of great players but this intro really hits home with me. Especially those diads on the 4th and 5th fret on the A&D and the open E. It sounds super authentic to me.
Happy Sunday Tim. I part of your live stream yesterday. I’m in the Master Class I LOVE IT!
Mr. Pierce, where have you been alll my life ? Sure could have used your channel and/or your method of Instructions,, or tutorials Whatever you want to call your videos, you do it with such detail. You show each step with so much patience. I don’t think I have ever seen anybody go over a piece of music in slow, broken up into sections, and go over each one multiple times, slowly. Then the way you start playing section after section then making runs putting sections together. I love this channel and your style of showing how to play multiple pieces. DONT EVER CHANGE YOUR STYLE, and tricks. I’m still learning and you are making it much easier and quicker. Just wanted to put my two cents worth about it.
Thanks Tim,
I have struggled for years trying to get the intro just right. This lesson really helped with the timing!
Thanks again!
I love that legendary walk up and your tutorials!
Tim please keep the lessons coming. I'm having a great time understanding these awesome ideas of Jimi Hendrix.
Thanks for subscribing Ravi! #heyjoe
Tim Pierce Guitar Tim it would be a great help if you could do a guitar amp tutorial in the future. I'm having a tough time working out all the settings by myself. Cheers
Tim - I really like your direct and helpful approach. No fillers here - just right on the money and very helpful.
I really haven't had the chance to say how much ive learned and that your such a awesome teacher Tim ty 2 thumbs up with you an marty such great ppl
Jeez, how lucky are we to have you teaching us in such an easy to understand method. I can't thank you enough for sharing such a wealth of knowledge for all of us aspiring musicians. You are bar none the best instructor I've found to date. Can't wait to discover more! Thanks Tim!
that is the stratiest strat I have ever heard. awesome!
Tim, just to say a massive Thank you for this lesson. You explain so well. Really appreciated.
Hands down…. Best instructor on the Tube
Love to hear you play, and thank you so much for teaching us the right way to play!
Wrong.
You've wasted 7 years believing these lies.
Hendrix recordings are slowed down which stretches the notes.
Drummers can't detune drum cymbals or their cowbell.
Detuning the guitar doesn't work.
CD's reverse the tones.
Computers drop 80% of the terrible reverse CD sound.
Computers play 20% of the original slowed down and stretched sound in reverse tone order.
NO jimi hendrix equipment was purchase for this video performance.
Tim huge fan from the first video I saw you in with Papastache, You have an amazing way of teaching guitar musically to players of any level...You have helped open big doors in my playing. KEEP IT ROCKIN
Thanks Josh for your comment! #guitar-lesson #hey-joe
This an outstanding lesson! I like the way you incorporate all the little techniques and tricks that make the song sound exactly how it should. Please keep them coming, absolutely the best on TH-cam!
Much Appreciated! Thank!
I think u r lessons are great, I like your style of teaching & I'm getting a lot from them, thanks so much. Father's Day will be my two year anniversary & everything I have learned is from TH-cam,Marty is how I found u & I'm so much more motivated with your website, I recently bought a Strat 1st electric guitar,so the jimi lessons R great for this guitar. I luv SRV & blues, maybe you could do a lesson or two) Texas flood, Mary had a little lamb, etc. thanks. P. S. I will be 55 in July never to late to learn something new. Thanks again
Tim, You are without a doubt the best instructor I have experienced in many years...This lesson is so good...It is a pleasure to be able to learn from such a pro...Thank you
So good! I've been getting by playing that song for too long. You picked up and explained things in a way that sounds so much better. Thank you!
Hi Tim we met when you were playing at the SUB at UNM. You had a Rich and had a really cool style. You probably
Ly don't remember me but I was the kid with the Guild Blues Bird. Had a Super reverb amp. One evening at the Albq convention center during the traveler band day you were playing Alvin Lee's going home almost note for note. You really inspired me. Thanks for doing the lessons.
Always classy. Very intuitive demonstration. Thank you.
Thanks Krantz happy you like it! #guitar-lesson #hey-joe
Little finger sounds just as good there at the last. Great lesson. Thank you
i wish you had come on you tube years ago you are definetely the best instructor i have seen ,great tim keep them coming
Thanks for your concere compliment and love, I'm not complete without you as my fan🌹🎻 I have you to be most thankful for 🎻🎻🌹
you are a natural teacher
Tim: Thanks for this lesson. How come guitar teachers like you weren't around when I was 17? If I had teachers in my younger days that taught relevant songs, note for note with such a pleasant nature, I would have stuck it out longer and not have had to return to guitar playing when I'm in my 60's!!!! Great job and hope to see more of your lessons.
Wow you really captured the essence of Jimi! Awesome playing! Thanks for the tutorial!
Oh fudge, this was sooo cool! Finally a tutorial that doesn't go "put your index finger here and your third finger here and pluck this and do that and hold your pick just so and..." ad-mind-numbingly-infinitum! Chillax, go with the flow and this is just how I interpret Jimi's diads. See, now I wanna pick up my guitar and play some! I remember trying to teach myself this song as a teen in the late 70s. It didn't sound quite like this (duh!) and I never amounted to much as a guitar player, but I wasn't totally off base either. Gonna try it Tim's way, now. Thanks!
Very cool Tim..!! Other than improvising over 1-4-5 progressions this is the first full length song I’ve learned.. with your generous help..!!
Thanks man.!👍🏼❤️
amazing tutorial, I love the fact you, at the same time you demonstrate a correct way of playing it, you suggest to "play around" a bit and to not follow by textbook. thanks, helped me a lot!
Thanks Tim. I sure am glad to become a member of your web site. You Rock !!!
Thanks Von! #hey-joe #guitar-lesson
You're a fantastic player and even better teacher. Keep up the great work
of all the how to play hendrix you are the only one that plays it like i learned it. thanks thought i was wrong but he never played anything the same way twice . as long as it sounds good it is good!
lol...Tim you are truly amazing ....I've been playing a long time and I smile when ever I hear you play ANYTHING!
Awesome lesson, I love Hendrix! Looking forward to the next part. Thank you!
Thanks!
Hi Tim, gotta tell you I've been a long time follower of your vids, first time commenting, lol. Dude, you ROCK!!! Your skills are amazing on whatever you are playing. I've learned so much from you, ( been a guitar piddler for 30 yrs) just now, thanks partly to you, I'm finally figuring out what I'm supposed to be playing, how & why. Thank you so very very much for taking your time to help us!! :-))
You, sir, are one of the best guitarists of this day and age
Flash Muzza Thanks Flash! :) #hey-joe
Brilliant. Tim, you are the best teacher. Thank you!
Okay, so this officially just became the first song I learned to play .... "Shot my woman down " , I can see my wife is really gonna love this , THANK YOU Mr Pierce , you're a really great teacher
Thanks for this , it's great. I was lucky enough to see Jimi play and you're right to say that he did so many variations on basic licks: he never played the same thing twice. Your lesson and Jimi's music are a great combination - I'm off to have a bash at it.
MrDimairt Thanks for subscribing! :) #hey-joe
You Are a Fantastic Teacher.
Great Video Tim, and great way you are teaching, thanks.
Klaus, thanks for the comment I appreciate it Tim
dude.. you wail. your tone is on point, and you play with such tasty nuance. I dig it. and you manage to articulate jimi's mojo like a boss. well done, brother. thank you.
My fourth time back! So inspiring...
You're the best Hendrix teacher. Thank you so much Tim!
Glad I've found you,Maybe I was sent by a higher being, This is exactly what I want & need. Ah gee the way you sit surrounded by what seems everything one would need.Even though your playing is fantastic you keep it as simple as you can & show what your fingers are also doing. Which is showing us exactly how & what goes where. Keep it going cause you keep me going,Thank you.
Warwick Smiley Thanks Warwick and thanks for subscribing! :) #heyjoe
