    I used to play that about 40+ years ago, although it didn't have a lot of the extra bits you mention. With doubles, we always played that you used up the dots you had before rolling again. Otherwise you can just wait in a room by a window until you get a huge total and the guards have no chance of catching you. There was also a limit of three opportunity cards at a time. We never used the do-or-die cards since they made no sense.
    Even so, I always thought the game was way too easy. If I remember correctly, my record was under 7 minutes (there was no turn counter then).
    That prompted us to make it harder. All equipment and escape kits had to be placed in a notebook with one page labeled for each searchable room. When the relevant search card was played, all equipment in that room was confiscated unless the prisoner surrendered a "hideaway" card. Also, the security officer was permitted to shuffle the security and opportunity decks at any time (and obviously would do so after playing a search card). When a POW left the inner courtyard, the player had to put his escape kit and all the equipment he would need in an envelope. If he ran out of equipment - too bad. If he was captured, the contents of the envelope were confiscated.

    Very instructive! Our group is going to play this for the first time tonight. The adverts look appealing, this video and rules errata/clarifications on BoardgameGeek are helpful. Would be a great game to sub miniatures for rather than dull pawn tokens! (A reissue with figures included would be terrific!)

    I'm not sure if you mentioned it, but you can also force an arrest as an escape officer by moving one of your pieces into/onto a guard. Least I believe this is correct.

    Rules clarificaion?
    If I roll a 5 or less, but it's a double (double 1 or double 2), I get to roll again, do I still pick up a card?. Likewise, if I roll double 6 twice then a 3, do i get a card for the 3? The rules suggest any movement roll of 5 or less, but only pick up one card per player turn (so if I manage to roll three lots of double 2, I only get 1 card not 3).

    Can a guard stay within a room that has an escape attempt token but not remove it? If that is allowed, then guards can basically block rooms where there is an escape attempt token, thus killing the purpose of not being able to enter rooms in the first place

    Ive just had a quick look at the video/game board and one difference I've noticed so far to the original version is in this version the Chapel tunnel does not go all the way to the fence. I will probably spot some more differences later.

    • @_User333
      @_User333 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The chapel tunnel exit was one circle beyond the fence so it did not require a valuable wirecutter card. Good to see an interest in this game on TH-cam, I might find someone in this world who is up for a game :-)

      @@mpeterll On the original board the Chapel tunnel goes one past the fence but in the new version it only extends one circle after the wall, so they have reduced the tunnel length by 4 or 5 circles. I wonder what the thinking/reason was behind this change.

    Hello and many thanks for explaining this to me via video, as I find it easier to understand rules this way rather than reading them. I've ordered mine from Amazon which is arriving tonight and after watching your video twice now, I have just one question.
    At 09.58 you mention if on the same turn you get one POW to a target and another following up, you're going to need a 2nd escape kit for him. My question is, you mentioned earlier that the POW"s can't get a 2nd escape kit until they've used the first one, so how can they have a 2nd one when following up, or do you mean whilst they are still inside, as being inside is the only way to get escape kits, unless I'm misunderstanding of which I apologise.

    • @footsoldier1468
      @footsoldier1468 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thankyou for this clear explanation. I do have one question. If a PoW is on a walkway can a guard arrest him. My gut says yes because you are not technically finishing your move on the walkway but I know this is gonna be contested. The old rules state where an arrest may/may not take place but not the new rules.

    Appeals & Searches: I loved playing this game through the years and bought the new Osprey version for my Thursday night game group....very nice upgrade & great videos from Osprey
    Clear up a point on Searches during an Appeal. Can a prisoner be arrested & sent to solitary if he is in dice roll range of guard and in a room normally off-limits to a guard during normal play?
    (Any chance of Osprey reviving the old 3M-Avalon Hills line of games like "speed circuit"?)

    • @Retrotsung
      @Retrotsung 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say Yes, a roll call has been called, prisoners failed to turn up, the guards would start searching for them (in the rooms too). However, upon saying that, maybe the exception to that is safe rooms where guards wouldn't go in at all. It's up to the escape commanders to attend it's a risk, they can see where guards are, they might decided it's a risk worth taking or not.

  • @MRdaBakkle

    I have some questions. For walkway spaces I understand that the germans cannot end their movement on those spaces. But does it count as ending their movement if a POW is on the space and they get arrested or would their movement end at the commander office. And second question the security Appel Card. If a POW chooses to not go to roll call and a search is rolled does the security officer just count the number of spaces regardless of if they can reach the POW by normal movement.

    I have just purchased this and awaiting it's arrival, as it was my favourite game back in the 1970s... As I haven't played it since the 80s I am interested to know if for a two player game it would be more fun and escape more achievable to have one player play two sets (teams) of POWs i.e.two different countries. I seem to remember when I used to play, just having one team was much easier for the guards to target and was very difficult to escape (which of course in real life was much the case). I just wonder with the collaboration of two teams whether it would be more fun, as I figure it would be easier to create strategies to outfox the guards... Opinions please?...

    We've also had some arguments about the Security Officer's search room cards. Do you have to move a guard into the room to search with the card or is it just an 'auto search' and arrest with no guards present?

    I have played the original and wondered what the official rule is for corridors and blue hiding spaces where a guard can be positioned in them to block the player. Good examples are in the single blue hiding place near the main entrance in the outer courtyard and the corridor by the sick bay. Would you have to use another player to force an arrest within the old rules to remove him as in the rules you have to move around other players not over them so otherwise you would be trapped.

    • @AdyXer
      @AdyXer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guards cannot end movement on black ringed ‘walkways’ and therefore cannot block the safe blue spaces.

  • @cornishbluebird
    @cornishbluebird 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If a player roles a 5 or less, do you have to pick up an opportunity card or can it be movement instead? Also, if you role a double to get someone out of solitary, for example double 6, does that piece have potentially 11 more movement roles, or do you role again and add those die roles to the initial double 6 even if you have got someone out of solitary?

    • @oceanyingtonic
      @oceanyingtonic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Gareth!
      If you roll a 5 or less, you pick up an opportunity card, but you also get to use your roll to move as per usual.
      If you roll a double, you first re-roll and add up the total, then decide if you want to spend one movement point to get someone out of solitary.
      Hope that helps

    • @mpeterll
      @mpeterll 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. In the original game, you got a card on a 3, 7 or 11 (hence, no doubles), and I think I remembered that you had to get that on the first roll of the turn, not after getting a double. I might be wrong though - it was a long time ago.

    How manny guards are alowed in the inner courtyard while playing?(not at the start). Is it possible for guards to block the doors to the rooms by standing there?(to block prisoners from getting in or out).

    • @TheNecrojabberwock
      @TheNecrojabberwock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      All the guards could potentially go to the inner courtyard, yes. But Escape Officers can force an arrest by moving a POW into a guard. Then, it's like a normal arrest: the POW would go to solitaire like normal and the guard would be forced to go to the Commander's Office. This is a way to open paths if the Security Officer tries to box POW's in. Also, most (if not all) of the spaces around a doorway have bold black outlines which means Guards are not able to end their turns there. Hope that helps!

    Between the 2 inner blocks of solitary confinement there is a passageway only one circle wide.
    Is someone allowed to just stay in that passageway blocking all movement along it?
    Also, what stops people just walking into the first circle in a room and stopping anyone else getting in?
    Or standing outside and stopping the German's getting in to make arrests when they have a room search card?
    Basically, what do the rules say about deliberate blocking of entrances and pathways?
    How is that handled in the game?
    Thanks

    • @johnnysunday402
      @johnnysunday402 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Guards cannot block any singles access spaces such as doorways and cannot end a move on such a space.
      Any guard blocked by a prisoner in such a space would force an arrest action.
      If a guard DID end a turn blocking a single access a prisoner could force an arrest by moving into the guard, sending guard to commandants office, IF such a move was legal.

    Maybe I'm being stupid but if you are playing with 6 players so the escape officers only have 4 pawns each then how can they get their second escape kit once one pawn has escaped the castle? If you can't get the second escape kit until the first one is used then you are going to be left with 3 pawns but need to spread them across 4 rooms to get the card.

    • @jimmyjim2
      @jimmyjim2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually I've answered my own question! You get an escape kit part for escaping when playing with 6 players. Makes sense now :-)

  • @steveshoebottom410
    @steveshoebottom410 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just bought this game. Remember playing original back in the 70’s. Couple of questions. On set-up rules state that a personal escape kit card is handed out of each officer. Does this mean POW’s do not have to assemble the 4 kit items as they already have an escape kit card? Confused as video states that escape officers cannot hold TWO escape kits simultaneously. Therefore upon one POW escaping he has to surrender his kit card so between escapes a new kit card has to be assembled.
    On setup only equal German guards to escaping nationalities can be located in inner courtyard. Ie British and American teams equal 2 German guards. Once game is up and running can additional German guards be deployed to inner courtyard or does it have to remain at maximum of 2.
    Finally do pawns have to count across each circle in inner white appel hexagon area or move they move from any outer edge?

      Hi Sam,
      If a POW has been sent to the outer solitary and later escapes, they may immediately try to escape. However, they must leave solitary into the darkened circle marked by the arrow. Does that clarify the ruling for you?

    So when playing with 6 players the prisoners from one color that escapes gets one escape kit for free when they escape? Thats because they will only have three prisoners left in there color.

    • @TheNecrojabberwock
      @TheNecrojabberwock 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The card you get is for an Escape Kit (part) and only covers two of the four pieces necessary to build a complete kit. So, two of your remaining POW's would need to be in rooms that cover the pieces you're missing to make a complete kit.
