Just want to point out I was stationed in Pearl Harbor Hawaii with the USN for 4 years. I have personally been on a USN vessel that has pulled into 3 of the islands (Oahu, Hawaii and Maui) and I sailed on a 38 ft sailboat to all of the islands except Ni'ihau. So obviously it is possible to go from island to island by boat. Just sayin...
I was stationed here back in 2003 they did have inner Island. I don't know if it was fairies but they removed and had their excuse and I guess it was the competition of inter island commercial airplanes was the competition (money). They removed the ferry between Ewa Beach and Ford Island which made getting home faster. Funny how some don't like the RAIL (I love it). Any whoot... Thank you for your service. Aloha 🤙🏽

I’ve personally sailed from San Diego to Hawaii and explored a few of the islands.. it has some weather conditions challenges. But it’s definitely not impossible
A few guys go between Molokai & Oahu on jet ski size watercraft and many cross by small craft boats over to Maui. The Coast Guard has rescued a few over the years, but it's done, like during the canoe races.
Back I. 1986 I was a 16 inch GMG on the battleship Missouri. During a port visit to Pearl Harbor, we left port and sailed around Molokai to pay respects to the residents and The Great White Fleet.
I think you covered all the points with accurate details. While it’s obvious that one can get to pretty much anywhere in the world using a boat, it isn’t something the typical person would do. The point is that there are no regularly scheduled inter-island ferry routes that can be used by a typical person. Which is too bad.
You guys got this wrong..the ocean between the major island can be very rough…high waves , strong currents , and high winds , all of these can happen often..
Matson has the monopoly that is the real reason, I rode on the superferry when it was running never saw a protestor at all like this guy says smaller ferries can be run but Matson shuts them down as they have the monopoly
I grew up on Oahu, Laie, our neighbor would kayak between the islands. So, it is possible to travel by boat between the islands. Not to mention the cruise ships that tour the islands.
And yes...let's just open strip mining, oil exploration and clear cut logging in places like Yellowstone and Yosemite. There is a finite point that the earth can be exploited without killing the goose that lays golden eggs. And if you listened to what was said in the video...the people that actually live there don't want it so they have taken their personal rights under the United States Constitution and elected a government to represent them as they see fit. If there was enough demand (free market shit) AND local support for such endeavors, then it would happen.
Maybe it may be because of the 90 footers on the North Shore? Ever go from Alaska to Hawaii in a ship? Those wave do last for days. It sucked in a small 4,000 ton ship.
Hawaii is so different from mainland you can't look at it the same with simple A to B. I'd love to see it and want it but I get some of the legitimate concerns. It's in the works to come back, one thing I'd say is only cars allowed on it require a HI drivers license and matching registration for the vehicle. Too many people took rentals and flew out and they had to keep bringing cars back to Oahu. Not very environmentally friendly. I hope it happens but it should be a thing for locals that tourists also get to use, not the other way around
Yea but that water is DEEP so it's impossible and scary if your boat goes down its better to Drown in 200 Ft of water rather than 2000 feet of water I guess ? I used to Deliver boats on the Atlantic side from NY state to All the Caribbean Islands and S. America, this video was fun to watch and listen to the BS.
"gilfrank5937," " . . . 'MY' 38' boat." That's not gonna duplicate what the 800 passenger SuperFerry is / was capable of transporting. The theme of this video report is viable, commercial, waterway transportation between the islands, not recreational / weekend sailors. There's plenty of other videos' threads where you can share your anecdotes of sailing your 38' vessel.
Na Wahine O Ke Kai and the Moloka'i Hoe are two events between islands where locals cross between Maui and Moloka'i the Hawaiian way, with an oar. May not be easy, and is not for everyone, but it can be done.
You said that the deep water channels between some of the island were too dangerous for small boats. Why? Small sailboats travel between the mainland US and Hawaii all the time. There are even sailboat races between the mainland and Hawaii (the Pacific Cup is one example). I'm not a sailor but I see no intrinsic danger in sailing a small boat over deep water.
How about the flying boats that fly on a cushion of air? Ground effect flight or vehicle, its like a hovercraft but without the airbag & loud noise. It's an airplane with a hull & wings that have an arch shape, I think those would do well since they can handle massive weight compared to their size.
so that's why you can't travel between Hawaiian islands! is because gigantic construction earthmovers are fighting off endless waves of baby krakens. whoda thunk it?
They tried twice to do interisland ferries, in the 70s there was the hovercraft, then most recently the ferry. Problem is special interests are threatened. Protecting wildlife is BS. Cruise ships go all around the islands. No one protests that. They can do more damage to the wild life than any ferry. The water is rough but how do you think the old Hawaiians got there? They paddled to the islands on canoes. If ancient mariners could come and go on canoes, why can’t motor powered boats? It all boils down to special interests. There’s nothing fast or convenient having to take a 30 minute flight. You still have to get to the airport ahead of time, go thru TSA screening and hurry up and wait! Then if you don’t have family to pick you up at the airport, you have to get a rental car or catch a cab. Would be so much easier if you could jump in your car and take a ferry. In Washington State where I live now, the ferry system is part of our highway system. Many people take a ferry daily to get to and from work and home. We have wildlife here too. Seals, whales, fish etc. Why not Hawaii?
No ! Actually they tried to bring in a ferry system but the big shipping companies blocked the ferry because they (the shipping companies themselves ) blocked it because they claimed they wouldn’t have the rider capacity but it’s a lie ! The shipping companies were afraid of the competition from a small ferry system so the people of Hawaii can travel from island to island without having to rent a car !
I was stationed at Pearl Harbor and one of my shipmates used to charter a 41 foot sailboat to take groups sailing to Maui. Then also there is still a US flag cruise ship which visits most of the islands home ported in Honolulu. But as a form of transportation boats are clearly inferior to air travel. Hawaii has its own airline which mostly flies inter-island.
Kind of cherry picking here. If you really were at pearl then 2 problems 1 ignoring past DISASTERS GREENVILLE AND OTHER LARGE SHIPS THAT RAN AGROUND AND LET OUT THE OIL 2 you were there before they changed it to joint base pearl hickam You may not know are are lieing. Either way, besides the large fishing boat full of teenagers that were killed by the green, you should find out before you talk shit.
Does it bother you that you lied throughout this video ? My wife is from Hawaii and I know that almost everything that you stated in this video is bull$&!t.
The title of this video is very misleading. 50 years ago my brother works on a 36 ft trimaran and made money ferrying people from Island to Island. I consider a 36 ft trimaran a boat
There have been ferries in the past. They failed. Niihau is only "off limits" that it is privately owned and the owners will let you visit by invitation if you know them. Big ferries aren't allowed due to political lobbying by the barge company and a small number of surfers. "transport of invasive species" is a joke because ships and barges and airplanes travel between the islands every day. You can still transport your car between the islands, it is just very expensive because you have to put it on a barge and there is little competition. Pretty much everyone in the world refers to Hawaii as either "Hawaii" "the State of Hawaii" or "Hawaiian Islands" almost nobody ever calls it "the archipelago" . LOL Hua LA LA was so far from the correct way to say it I had to think about what mountain he was describing. This is another dumb take on a subject done many times.
Invasive species are not a joke. There are regulations and protocols for shipping between islands that the ferry wouldn’t have been able to follow- and didn’t. It wasn’t a small amount of “surfers” who were against the ferry, either- lots of local hunters and fisherman did not want folks from other islands raiding their home islands natural resources- which was documented as happening the first week the Super Ferry ran- guys from Oahu stealing rocks from Haleakala park, etc. I can understand people thinking it would be a good idea, but it’s not accurate to portray a significant amount of peoples very legitimate concerns as a handful of fringe types with outrageous ideas.
The ancient Polynesians navigated the Pacific to settle on the Hawaiian Islands without modern instruments, motors, etc. So I am not buying this headline.
This is supposed to be about travel between Hawaiian Islands and you start with Alaska!?!? Nine seconds in and I pass. I don't need to know that badly.
"theORIGINALtonasco," and the last four minutes, mostly about volcanoes, is a bore for those who came to this video because of its specific title. Consider there's about four minutes of pertinent info within this 14-minute video. THAT will entice most viewers to 'pass' or 'bail'.
Like with aircraft, if you travel on a private vessel that can work and navigate on the open sea, travel between the islands is absolutely possible. The idiots whining about a "massive" craft with only a 12' draft are just that; idiots. But get on your own boat - or a friend's boat - and you can go anywhere you like.
"Supersail1," That's hardly news to anyone. But, the focus of the report is commercial waterway transportation like the SuperFerry with its 800-passenger + 200 automobiles capability. "Squeeze that amount onto your sailboat -- NOT !!"
What a post full of misinformation! The U.S. has many tropical places and the world knows them well. Try Guam, American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Also you also travel to and from by any means. This silly example is irrelevant. Do better!
Just want to point out I was stationed in Pearl Harbor Hawaii with the USN for 4 years. Put aside all the "reasons" for the lack of interisland boats / ferries. Government and special interest lobbies are the real reason.
Hawaii is the only Democrat Plantation where you can wear shorts year-round...
100%

Hmm, how did the original human inhabitants get there in the first place, and spread between the various islands before being “discovered”?
Back I. 1986 I was a 16 inch GMG on the battleship Missouri. During a port visit to Pearl Harbor, we left port and sailed around Molokai to pay respects to the residents and The Great White Fleet.

How about for a 3 hour tour.
😂😂😂
I get Ginger...
Be sure and take your entire wardrobe!
hahahhaha hahahahah hahaha,
You guys got this wrong..the ocean between the major island can be very rough…high waves , strong currents , and high winds , all of these can happen often..
Well, this title is patently false. I've travelled by boat between at least three Hawaiian Islands and all it took was a boat. Who writes your titles?
Do a search because they have regularly scheduled ferry rides between some of the islands.
Don't forget that Taxicab drivers and locals don't like Ferries that bring more vehicles to the Island's.
There's ferries from Maua to Molokai. I was there last year.
Matson has the monopoly that is the real reason, I rode on the superferry when it was running never saw a protestor at all like this guy says smaller ferries can be run but Matson shuts them down as they have the monopoly

The Expedition goes to Lanai to Maui all the time.Had a ferry boat that went from Maui to Molokai.
Ferry goes from lanai to Maui as well. I was on it last year
They tried in the past but locals shut it down.
So the only reason they "can't" use boats is because of government interference not because it's not possible. Got it.
I didn't need the 14 minute reminder that Hawaii exists to get to that answer
There have been several interisland passenger ferries as well as a Honolulu to Pearl Harbor ferry but they unable to make a profit
Thanks😂

Tree hugger Liberals .......... bottom line .
what a nice trip that would be between the islands on a ship, especially a tall ship, couldn't think of a better way to see a place like that,,
How do you think the first native Hawaiian got to the islands?
Wtf? They literally have cruise ship tours around the Hawaiian Islands. A co-worker of mine went on one for his wedding anniversary.
Maybe it may be because of the 90 footers on the North Shore? Ever go from Alaska to Hawaii in a ship? Those wave do last for days. It sucked in a small 4,000 ton ship.

I have sailed from California to Hawaii and back.....trans pac....is a blast
I was Stationed on Midway Island, the next to the Last Island in the Hawaiian Chain … MANY Years ago ….
Okay why don't they use hovercrafts ,they fly above water an faster than boats an are more fuel efficient.
This is total bullshit! I live in Hawaii and travel between the islands in my 38’ boat.

In the Azores, Philippines etc, they have ferries crossing big deep waters. The problem is the natives.
$100 dollars is not cheaper than $5
I've taken a commercial boat from Maui to Lanai.
What about hoover craft ????????? Other countries have used this mode of transportation
So Hawaii had the super ferry for several years that went between islands.... LOL

My friends paddle board between islands.
You could ship yourself in a cargo container
Florida is not tropical? It was when I went to school. Although, it was public school.
Actually you can travel by boat between the islands but it's not economical. You can take private boats between the islands.
Does it bother you that you lied throughout this video ? My wife is from Hawaii and I know that almost everything that you stated in this video is bull$&!t.
AirFish would work here once EV versions are developed.
They should use hovercraft like the ones that used to cross the English Channel
The title of this video is very misleading. 50 years ago my brother works on a 36 ft trimaran and made money ferrying people from Island to Island. I consider a 36 ft trimaran a boat

And they want to go to Mars…..
Did we forget about Puerto Rico, Again?
I suppose the original Hawaiians flew in by plain because tiny boats are too dangerous to go between islands
Hirono didn’t get her 10%.
High speed low altitude transportation is just asking for an accident.
I think you enjoyed saying archipelago too much.
Cruise ships do it every day.
No. ALUMINIUM.
Great now the video shows an air glider, what I was talking about in my first comment,😮💨.
Politics.
The ancient Polynesians navigated the Pacific to settle on the Hawaiian Islands without modern instruments, motors, etc. So I am not buying this headline.
How awful and such a tragedy for the native Hawaiians.
Too much hot air.... very irritating
Not pronounced, "nee-how."
It's' "nee-ee-how."

Lived there years lol lol lol lol lol fake ........................
By 2:31 I became incredibly bored with your preamble and gave up. Guess I will never know what your vid title illuded to after all.
Stop lying please! I'm sick of lies

BS...Islanders sailed all over the Pacific
Liberal insanity!
Hawaii is the mountain tops of the Russia mountain Chain.
This is stupid, people travel by boat between the islands in Hawaii all of the time; ask anyone that owns a sailboat there.
"Supersail1," That's hardly news to anyone. But, the focus of the report is commercial waterway transportation like the SuperFerry with its 800-passenger + 200 automobiles capability. "Squeeze that amount onto your sailboat -- NOT !!"

Lame excuses. 🥴
Another good reason for me to NEVER go to Hawaii, I have NEVER desired to go to a VERY Liberal tourist trap with crazzzy high prices
BS
Waste of my time
Who gives a crap about whales and dolphins you dont est them they serve no purpose.
WTF
WOW You are really IGNORANT about life.
@marksmith7054 I make a little over 16 cents a second every second of the day every day of the year. I don't care you matter 0 😂😂😂😂😂
I'll charitably assume this is sarcasm.
what purpose do you serve?
