    Just want to point out I was stationed in Pearl Harbor Hawaii with the USN for 4 years. I have personally been on a USN vessel that has pulled into 3 of the islands (Oahu, Hawaii and Maui) and I sailed on a 38 ft sailboat to all of the islands except Ni'ihau. So obviously it is possible to go from island to island by boat.
    Just sayin...

      I was stationed here back in 2003 they did have inner Island. I don't know if it was fairies but they removed and had their excuse and I guess it was the competition of inter island commercial airplanes was the competition (money). They removed the ferry between Ewa Beach and Ford Island which made getting home faster. Funny how some don't like the RAIL (I love it). Any whoot... Thank you for your service. Aloha 🤙🏽

    I think you covered all the points with accurate details.
    While it’s obvious that one can get to pretty much anywhere in the world using a boat, it isn’t something the typical person would do.
    The point is that there are no regularly scheduled inter-island ferry routes that can be used by a typical person. Which is too bad.

      And if you listened to what was said in the video...the people that actually live there don't want it so they have taken their personal rights under the United States Constitution and elected a government to represent them as they see fit. If there was enough demand (free market shit) AND local support for such endeavors, then it would happen.

    Hawaii is so different from mainland you can't look at it the same with simple A to B. I'd love to see it and want it but I get some of the legitimate concerns. It's in the works to come back, one thing I'd say is only cars allowed on it require a HI drivers license and matching registration for the vehicle. Too many people took rentals and flew out and they had to keep bringing cars back to Oahu. Not very environmentally friendly. I hope it happens but it should be a thing for locals that tourists also get to use, not the other way around

      "gilfrank5937," " . . . 'MY' 38' boat." That's not gonna duplicate what the 800 passenger SuperFerry is / was capable of transporting. The theme of this video report is viable, commercial, waterway transportation between the islands, not recreational / weekend sailors.
      There's plenty of other videos' threads where you can share your anecdotes of sailing your 38' vessel.

    You said that the deep water channels between some of the island were too dangerous for small boats. Why? Small sailboats travel between the mainland US and Hawaii all the time. There are even sailboat races between the mainland and Hawaii (the Pacific Cup is one example). I'm not a sailor but I see no intrinsic danger in sailing a small boat over deep water.

    How about the flying boats that fly on a cushion of air? Ground effect flight or vehicle, its like a hovercraft but without the airbag & loud noise. It's an airplane with a hull & wings that have an arch shape, I think those would do well since they can handle massive weight compared to their size.

    They tried twice to do interisland ferries, in the 70s there was the hovercraft, then most recently the ferry. Problem is special interests are threatened. Protecting wildlife is BS. Cruise ships go all around the islands. No one protests that. They can do more damage to the wild life than any ferry. The water is rough but how do you think the old Hawaiians got there? They paddled to the islands on canoes. If ancient mariners could come and go on canoes, why can’t motor powered boats? It all boils down to special interests. There’s nothing fast or convenient having to take a 30 minute flight. You still have to get to the airport ahead of time, go thru TSA screening and hurry up and wait! Then if you don’t have family to pick you up at the airport, you have to get a rental car or catch a cab. Would be so much easier if you could jump in your car and take a ferry. In Washington State where I live now, the ferry system is part of our highway system. Many people take a ferry daily to get to and from work and home. We have wildlife here too. Seals, whales, fish etc. Why not Hawaii?

  • @steveolson69
    @steveolson69 หลายเดือนก่อน

    No ! Actually they tried to bring in a ferry system but the big shipping companies blocked the ferry because they (the shipping companies themselves ) blocked it because they claimed they wouldn’t have the rider capacity but it’s a lie ! The shipping companies were afraid of the competition from a small ferry system so the people of Hawaii can travel from island to island without having to rent a car !

    I was stationed at Pearl Harbor and one of my shipmates used to charter a 41 foot sailboat to take groups sailing to Maui. Then also there is still a US flag cruise ship which visits most of the islands home ported in Honolulu. But as a form of transportation boats are clearly inferior to air travel. Hawaii has its own airline which mostly flies inter-island.

    There have been ferries in the past. They failed. Niihau is only "off limits" that it is privately owned and the owners will let you visit by invitation if you know them. Big ferries aren't allowed due to political lobbying by the barge company and a small number of surfers. "transport of invasive species" is a joke because ships and barges and airplanes travel between the islands every day. You can still transport your car between the islands, it is just very expensive because you have to put it on a barge and there is little competition. Pretty much everyone in the world refers to Hawaii as either "Hawaii" "the State of Hawaii" or "Hawaiian Islands" almost nobody ever calls it "the archipelago" . LOL Hua LA LA was so far from the correct way to say it I had to think about what mountain he was describing. This is another dumb take on a subject done many times.

    • @matthewfield2208
      @matthewfield2208 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Invasive species are not a joke. There are regulations and protocols for shipping between islands that the ferry wouldn’t have been able to follow- and didn’t. It wasn’t a small amount of “surfers” who were against the ferry, either- lots of local hunters and fisherman did not want folks from other islands raiding their home islands natural resources- which was documented as happening the first week the Super Ferry ran- guys from Oahu stealing rocks from Haleakala park, etc. I can understand people thinking it would be a good idea, but it’s not accurate to portray a significant amount of peoples very legitimate concerns as a handful of fringe types with outrageous ideas.
