The beautiful & supreme screen soprano Kathryn Grayson's performance of the very differcult aria Je SuisTitania was superb. During her performance she used her vocal cords as an instrument & reached high notes with such clarity that other sopranos could only dream of. Rest in peace dear lady & your talent will never be replaced.
I'm a great fan of Kathryn Grayson and I love all the films with her and Mario Lanza! Unfortunately she'sn't as famous as he but she would have deserved to be known all over the world! That she was a fanastic singer is obvious in this beautiful clip!
It takes a first class coloratura soprano to do justice to this aria, and Kathryn is one of the very best. If you like this type of singing, I strongly recommend her version of " The Bell Song" from Lakme. It is the best I have ever heard.
Remember she is not singing this aria to be faithful to the opera. She is singing it while playing a scene in a movie about something totally different, and has to work those emotions into it while still singing the aria accurately, if not with the meaning of the original..
I JUST CANNOT BELIEVE IT - Another film with Kathryn I saw more than half a century ago and didn't see it again!!! SEVEN SWEETHEARTS!!!!!!!! I'm happy!!
When I saw the movie The Seven Sweethearts I thought maybe she lip-synced the song, but boy was I ever happy to learn that she really did sing it and that she was such an accomplished opera singer. OMG......What a beautiful voice and person.
Hi Joe, Good to hear from you! I agree, and think Kathryn was in her lower 20s here! Beautiful, and a vocal genius at the same time! Good to hear from you kind friend! varadero
@@varadero1839 in some ways i wws very lucky. I had a woman that looked exactly like Kathryn. Her name was Storm, 4foot 11. Just to be with her and hold her was Heaven. She took he4 own life at 23. I miss he4 eve4y day, though she has been gone three years. When i watch Kathryn, i have my Storm back for a little while
HI Joe Smith, I'm so sorry for your loss; Storm sounds like a truly beautiful loved-one. Also, I'm happy that watching Ms. Grayson brings back your Storm to you! So good to hear from you!
Kathryn's voice is perfect for coloratura singing. It's light, airy, silvery, and fluid. I saw most of her movies on late night TV, but I never saw this one, so thank you for posting it. Too bad the song had to be interrupted because I would've liked to hear her sing the whole aria. I have a hunch she learned the aria phonetically and doesn't (or didn't at that time) speak French. She pronounces the word que as kay alhough I'm told the word is pronounced something like ker or kuh.
I sometimes see posts saying Kathryn Grayson wasn't as good as and so, or can't compair with Mario Lanza..I don't know, maybe I'm prejudiced but I find her, beautiful, echanting and an exremely accomlished artist. I know she has given me much joy and I thankyou again for your posts.
Hi TheMidlakes, my knowledge of French is sorely lacking. I feel fine with Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, but I've always been afraid of French! I'm glad you enjoyed this piece by a super-young Kathryn. I'm thinking she'd have loved completing the piece without the usual "romantic issues." Anyway, that's Hollywood life, and if you're as young as she was you did what you were told! She made up for it later on! Please view my other clips by Ms. Grayson. I'm a huge fan, and for many years!
Hi Pianokitty23, To answer your question, here we go. Ms. G is the 7th of the "Seven Sweethearts," all sisters. Her father insists that no one may marry before the oldest sister weds. Kathryn's in love with Van Heflin and, during her song, pretty much succumbs to sadness. She walks off the stage, is consoled by her father and Van. Still unsure of herself, she manages to pull out all the stops for a triumphal finish! Hope this helps. By the way, there's a happy ending. Best, varadero
Hi Mr. Price, She's one of my favorites also! I've many clips of the beautiful Miss Grayson here on YT! Please search, if you have time! Best regards, varadero
The beautiful Kathryn Grayson sang the very difficult je suis titania with supreme confidence &hit the high notes with power & clarity. People on TH-cam who stated she was not good must be tone deaf.
@igormorosow Her beauty and talent were difficult to ignore. I suspect she's in her early 20's here and her lovely voice is just thrilling! Thanks so much for your comment! She's very sorely missed, not only in the entertainment world but the "world" in general; such was her talent!

Kathryn Grayson does a lovely job of this aria and I find her voice to be enchanting. I think she is a very underrated singer .I disagree with those who say she sounds screechy. I find her voice very lovely throughout it's entire range. She is also a very beautiful woman one of the most beautiful of MGM's actresses .She and Jane Powell and Shirley Jones are my favorite movie Sopranos.
@krispygoose Hola! OMG indeed! She really could sing beautifully, and was so accomplished, even at this young age. She'll always be a favorite of mine, and I'm grateful for your comment. Be well!
I totally agree with you, and sorry it took so long for me to reply! The infamous "Holidays" kind of got in the way. Very grateful for your notice and obvious reverance to one of the most unforgettable performers we'll ever know!
Bernadette, the movie is called "Seven Sweethearts" from 1942. This is at a point where Van Heflin's part hears her sing and since he is in love, he is trying to take her with him, yet she sings. Here is a link to explain more about the movie: www.imdb.com/title/tt0035309/
Фантастический голос, Кэтрин Грейсон берёт на форте фа диез 3 октавы! Как жаль, что она отдала лучшие годы не опере и не стала выдающейся оперной певицей.
Gwen Ferry Angelic she was! There's no doubt. I suspect that with your zeal and ardor you'll either equal or surpass Ms. Grayson's voice! I'll be in your corner and wishing you the best. Thank you for your mention; I'm honored! varadero

You can't imagine, KG was ahead of her time, and before all ahead of her both husbands. Just follow theirs destinies in Wiki. While she was able to get a Dean at a State University. Thus, she was an exemplary personality. Even don't try to make solely a night club singer out of her, though she was it once upon a time. Others retained this status all their lives long, say, like Mario Lanza himself. So, seen socially, he couldn't even approach her personality, thus remaining at a distance. Indeed, she was a protagonist of feminism of nowadays. People can't realise the scale of her advancements within the operatic art and the society. as being the whole complex one.
She has a strange tone and is flat in places. She sounds like a little girl with a very developed vibrato. Just not impressed. Not my taste at all. Glad to see though that people are appreciating classical music through her. She's a good ambassador for opera in this way.

This bird sings like a chicken. Julie Andrews was much better.
Love her voice, love her films.

I agree, those obligatos and trills are hard work. Not every soprano can do them as well with maybe the exception of Marta Eggerth.

She doesnt even show difficulty with the singing with her face , talent and hardwork
Can someone explain what is happening in this video? Obviously it's from a movie and I'm very interested. I love Grayson's voice!

Is this Irene Dunne "OR" Kathryn Grayson?
It’s Kathryn Grayson. I’ve a number of her performances on my site. If you like her, please check them out. Thanks for writing!
When will the world ever be blessed again with another like Kathryn?

When was in films she was brilliant but the later recordings of her singing were nowhere near as brilliant as when she was young

Technically proficient. I prefer Beverly Sills or Dame Julie at 12.
@punknn08 Beverly Sills, to name only one.
Sorry, lacks natural beauty in the voice.
She has a strange tone and is flat in places. She sounds like a little girl with a very developed vibrato. Just not impressed. Not my taste at all. Glad to see though that people are appreciating classical music through her. She's a good ambassador for opera in this way.
She sounds like a chipmunk. Listen to Kathleen Battle to hear it done beautifully
Just shut up and don't display your stupidity. Battle was a pain in the ass who managed to get herself dismissed from the Met.
Her voice does tend to sound thin and shrill.
