  • The famously private "Game of Thrones" star talks with "60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl about a new film adaptation of the play "Cyrano de Bergerac," featuring Dinklage as the ghostwriter of love letters wooing the beautiful Roxanne. Stahl also talks with "Cyrano" screenwriter Erica Schmidt (Dinklage's wife); and with director Joe Wright, who reveals how the period romance almost devolved into a disaster movie while shooting near a suddenly-active volcano.

That is a great point about actors' public lives impacting how we see their performances. The less we know, the better.

I totally agree. I have zero desire to immerse my life into the lives of someone who just happens to be a celebrity. TBH...Who cares when they go shopping, who they are dating/married to, how old their children are, where they live, what they eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, where the go on vacation or even how they worship/not. The actresses and actors I enjoy watching perform, via screen, stage or on TV are far more valued in my eyes for the complexity and creativity they give to the characters they portray above anything else.

That happens more often than I'd like. Some actors can't shut themselves off and we see their personality come through. Some actors like Tom Hanks, performs, and though most of us Know his "personal" side, he manages to come off so strong that we forget! But, now and then, I regret seeing a performer being open to the public eye. Like with "Lincoln". The Internet wasn't always the main avenue for celebrity coverage. Even though Daniel Day Lewis did give interviews throughout his career, I didn't much go out of my way to pay attention, until "Lincoln"! Daniel couldn't be Farther from his portrayal and this proves he has tremendous talent. But, at the same time, I now think a bit more about Daniel than Abe, when I watch that movie.

Arguably ...I think what made Robert Downey Jr's portray of Ironman so compelling was how similar his own backstory was to Tony Stark's.

Cyrano was a delight to watch, and I wish that cinema of that level of depth would get more publicity and revenue. That movie spoke to me as an anxious person, and I saw a lot of myself in Peter Dinklage's portrayal. You could tell that in this version of Cyrano, he was more afraid of his heart and openness than he was his looks.

Shame on Leslie Stahl. This was one of the worst interviews ever. You get an opp to interview a great talent like Dinklage who normally avoids it, and you feed into exactly what he prob doesn't appreciate about them-spending a good amount asking about his physical difference and questioning his honesty during the interview?! Also, I agree w/him about actors over exposing themselves.

I completely agree with his opening statement. as an audience member, for me personally, not knowing the actor is great because it allows me to enjoy the character(s) they portray. It takes away that feeling you get when you see an actor in another role and it takes time to adjust because you're used to them being and acting a certain way. plus it allows them to be people and live normal lives as they should be allowed to. when I know an actors personal life too much then that is all I can see, unless they're a damned good actor who can just take you into that character.

I think "humble" when I hear "insecurity." Am I good enough? No. Some would say I am. I feel I am good as often as I am able. It literally took me decades to just be able to say, "Thank you, that's is so nice of you to tell me" when someone complimented me on my singing. And it happened a lot, these strangers coming up and thanking me for singing, telling me how good they believe my singing is. Because before I understood that a stranger going up to another stranger and telling them something good is a most wonderful gift that they are presenting you, all smiling faces and shining eyes, a gift from their heart.
But I would waste all their time pointing out every flaw in what I'd just done. Even to the point of telling them, "The drunker you are, the better I sound," which is saying, as I see it now, that they're not talented enough to understand just how bad I sounded. Taking their gift of compliment and turning it into a way to vent my insecurity. So insecure or humble? Can these two things be the same thing? A good thing? False humility is ugly. True humility involves insecurity about your "gift." I've lost my singing voice in my head, but the very last time I sang in public people were throwing compliments to me, like being blown kisses and just being so grateful that something which has brought so much joy and much-needed emotional expression to my life had made other people happy.
Peter Dinklage is my Robin Williams, my Jeff Daniels, my Tommy Lee Jones. An actor I will always want to watch act. They never have disappointed me.
    ....and then she pushed "COMMENT"

Horrible interviewer. She was obsessed with his height. He’s a great actor and human being. He’s been in so many things and she kept bringing up his height. He starred in a wonderful movie called The Station Agent. Could have brought up a lot of the roles he has done. Interviewers get fixated on physical aspects of people, height, skin color, looks instead of the person’s character. There’s an interviewer on this same show who asked Lyle Lovett how he got Julia Roberts to marry him since she was beautiful and he was ugly. The interview style is terrible.

He was so danged charming, especially that twinkle in his eye at the very end. I doubt he would have expected her to soft-soap him, nor would he have wanted that. I will say that I had no idea that he was from New Jersey - thought he was British through and through. I love that his wife was also interviewed, and she shared the story of his walking his dog. It's an interesting point about knowing too much about an artist. Artists draw from their own lives so much in order to produce art that connects, but at what point does it become difficult to separate art from an artist (under good, not bad circumstances) and at what point do people start to imagine that they're just "playing themselves" instead of drawing from personal experience or emotional memory?

After this horrible interview I'm starting to wonder if Lesley Stahl is "balanced".

That was awkward. This story is perfect for you? I feel like Peter would know what story fits him and which don't.

It was very insulting of her to ask him if he was acting at the end of the interview. Rude and classless.
