    I had several problems with my SS 160. It would play records that I did not select and started playing, rejecting and playing the same record over and over. First of all, the Tormat contacts have to be conspicuously clean. I carefully used 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper on the silver traveler contacts and the Tormat contacts followed by a commercial contact cleaner spray. There is only a tiny current in the Tormat magnetic coils to pick up, so contact must be no less than perfect. This corrected the selection problem; it worked like a charm. The problem with the reject/play issue was traced to the step relay in the Control Center. This relay has two solenoids. The armatures and shafts must be cleaned thoroughly ( I used contact cleaner) so they operate freely. The contacts must also be cleaned the same way as the Tormat. This relay MUST be placed in the FULLY UNLOADED position to stop the reject/play cycling problem. Make SURE of this or your jukebox will just continue to reject/play/reject/play. The Tormat relay (the other relay in the Control Center) contacts must also be carefully cleaned. Make sure the Tormat connection to the Control Center is making perfect contact (again, this operates on a very small current) and that all the other plugs are fully connected. I ended up replacing the RCA phone jack plug on the Tormat connection to the Control Center. If you have not replaced all the electrolytic capacitors in the Control Center, do it! I used Mouser Electronics to find the replacements.

      I did identify yet another problem that causes the mechanism to extract a record, go to play it, immediately reject the record, fail to travel and pull the same record over and over. The cause is that the solenoid in the player mechanism remains energized and the problem is in the Control Center. A relay in the Control Center that controls the solenoid remains energized; it should only latch for a moment but does not. If you disconnect and remove the Control Center, plug it into AC and the relay closes and stays closed, there is a problem with the circuit that controls the relay. The Control Center has an RCA jack connection to the Tormat and a signal from the Tormat triggers a silicon controlled switch (SCS which is very similar to a silicon controlled rectifier). This allows 27 volt current to flow through the relay coil, latching the relay. The associated circuitry is supposed to quickly drain the charge and shut off the SCS. Most likely, there is nothing wrong with the SCS, and a replacement may not be available, but the resistors and very likely the capacitors have aged and changed value. To further complicate the problem, they may intermittently work just fine. I ripped out all the components - three resistors and three capacitors and replaced them with identical specification high quality narrow tolerance components. II did try to replace the SCS with an SCR that seemed to work exactly the same and had proper specs, but it failed to work, so I re-inserted the original SCS into the circuit. The mechanism now operates flawlessly for just a couple bucks in parts.

    Might you have any ideas on how to fix this model that will not pick up the a side of a record

    You can unwarp a warped record betwean two warm absolutly flat surfaces (I use two heavy metal plates) ,, the record must first cleaned then placed in a clean protective sleeve , in the hot afternoon sun it takes a couple of hours ,, you can do it faster by heating the record with heat source like an oven on a low setting but you have to be very careful when doing so with the temperature you allow the record to reach , put a digital thermometer in your jukebox and check how warm its getting inside I bet you will be suprised , do what you can to keep it below 80 degs. with 70 being the best upper limit for storage.. jukeboxes with a visiable mech will quickly warp your records if exposed to direct sunlight..

    A lot of MCA singles would warp in jukeboxes for some reason. MCA's 45's were especially bad about warpage in the 70's. I know this for a fact as my uncle was a bar owner when MCA was still technically a new label and had a jukebox where the 45 would play lying on a turntable. I even remember the record: Olivia Newton-John's then current single, "If You Love Me Let Me Know" .

      You might want to track down a second copy of The Notorious Cherry Bombs single,as it looks like it's beginning to warp as well.

    Got a question for you Sir.
    I have the same machine.
    It has been working for years when all of a sudden I play a record and the machine is stuck playing the same track over and over. Once it finishes the 45 it puts it down and right back up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      Must be a problem with these, as I remember that there was one in a Dairy Queen that got stuck on Loverboy’s “Hot Girls In Love”.

    Sam, I have the same juke box. Question. What might cause the selector to scan but not select record?
    Thanks

    • @SamsArcadeFix
      @SamsArcadeFix  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is this something it just started doing? Did it work before or did you buy it this way? What exactly is it doing? Does it start scanning after you enter a selection and if so does it just keep scanning nonstop or does it scan back and forth twice and then stop without playing the selection?

      Hi, thanks for the reply. Hadn't played it in a little while. Noticed my grandson plugging in some quarters while it was powered down. When I powered it up, made selection, cartridge scanned but no selection. I've tried coining it again, same result. The 'play' switch is in play mode. Operated perfectly before grandchilds efforts

      Scans 2x after selection

      @@bobspencer7018 I don't see how putting coins in when the unit is off would cause any problems. I do have the SS160 Seeburg troubleshooting guide and would recommend you buy one. Start by checking all plugs and connections. It seems to be a common problem but with many causes. The guide says it could be a problem with the Control Center, Solid State Stepper, Mechanism, Pricing Unit or Electrical Selector which doesn't leave much out. :-) .It could be bad capacitors, burnt resistors or just a bad, dirty connection or leaf switch. It outlines test's to rule out each one but requires some out dated test equipment which can easily be made. One is just a 1.5 volt AA battery with a test lead on both ends used to trip the read/write unit which they call a CT1 Circuit Tester and the other is a neon test lamp, just a neon light bulb with test leads. The tests are too involved to list here so a copy of the troubleshooting guide would be a plus along with a copy of the service manual.
      This site maybe of some help. www.flippers.com/Seeburg-trblshoot.html
