Writers and editors have these weird ideas that married couples can't have interesting relationships, you can't have new love interests and the readers can't relate to them. Good writers can write interesting couples with interesting dynamics. Add on creatives who want the comic how they remember it and comic characters almost never go anywhere. It's why spin offs and alternate versions can be more interesting they can develope and change and have a complete story.
I can't wait for you guys to do Sinister War. A story that starts with Strange confronting Mephisto about what he did with Peter's soul and Peter is ready to pop the question again. but then a new Co-writer from the Slott Era comes to "help" and now it's about someone else's soul for zero reason. Peter forgets about the ring, and Ben Reilly is Spidey again....
Matthew Rosenberg, the co-writer, wasn't from "Slott's Era". Slott was off writing Ironman and Fantastic Four while Nick Spencer was Spider-Man head writer. Dan Slott's only involvement with any Spider-Man properties during that time was helping with the video game story, helping Christos Gage with Spider-Geddon, and probably writing a few one-shot stories here and there. But the Spencer era was the most hands-off he had been with the Spider-Man books since his Spider-Man/Fantastic Four mini. Slott gets a lot of shit, some deserved, some not. But he is entirely blame-less for what became of Nick Spencer's run at the end, as he had no influence (that we know of) on the direction or the results of that story. Matthew Rosenberg had been working on X-Men before Jonathan Hickman started the Krakoa Era. He was brought in genuinely to help Spencer on Spider-Man during the Last Remains arc (the first big Kindred story) and had been helping on and off until Sinister War. That's the time period he was pretty much co-writer for every issue. My speculation and theory was he was initially brought in to help Spencer with the workload of having so many mini-events within the Amazing Spider-Man storylines. Once Spencer's plans to leave (and possibly undo One More Day, *but that's just a rumor*) became clearer, someone at Spidey Editorial put their foot down, reigned in Spencer, cut his ideas and forced him to cram his long term story into a shorter run, with the Sinister War mini series to fill in any gaps. The story went from having a snail pace, to all of a sudden throwing so much shit in at break neck speed, that the last issue of the Kindred story starts contradicting things it had already set up an issue before. The whole thing is still shrouded in mystery. All I know is, something went wrong between Spencer and his Spider-Man run and some significant plans changed. Would love to see a back-issues episode try to make sense of all of this. But if Sal and the gang were to cover "Sinister War" they would also have to cover the Amazing Spider-Man story that was running perpendicular to it. Those issues were so closely tied together, it felt like Sinister War was just an extra issue of the main Amazing Spider-Man book. It only exists to tie up all the loose ends that Spencer had laid out previously in his run.
That last bit. About something you hate and don’t think should exist but can’t deny the creativity that did come out of it and the new fans it brought into the community…. That is exactly how I feel about the New 52 and everything afterwards. I can accept it now and appreciate some of the stories that came out post-Flashpoint. What a well put sentiment, Sal.
I don’t think anything came up creatively that was a direct effect from the undoing of the marriage. The one big story would be Superior, since Ock has his own love interest. I think most fans just want the marriage back. 90% of media outside of the 616 universe has him in a relationship with MJ
I don't even understand the argument about being embarrassed in front of their friends and family. Their wedding was going to be a civil ceremony anyway. It was peter and M.j's friends and family that planned literally every aspect of their wedding
I was rewatching the One More Day video and saw Sal mention how they were never going to do One Moment in Time, so I had to come back here to laugh about that
What I find interesting is that in the original printing if you look closely she says “you will make me remember everything” which is then inverted and layered on itself, then in the story it’s retconned but once again re retconned in nick spencers arc when she tells kindred “he doesn’t remember” meaning that at least MJ supposedly remembers their marriage
So something I just realized is that Aunt May was the one that set Peter and MJ up, so wouldn’t it be funny if she somehow knew that she’d be fatally wounded in the future and the only to save her was a relationship as strong as theirs would be sold to Mephisto, so she set the two of them up on a blind date as “life insurance” in the future? Haha… wait a minute…
I met Straczynski back in 2019 at a con (remember those??) And I was able to tell him how he wrote one of arguably the best modern Spiderman runs. And that despite the last issue of OMD, the story itself was beautifully written. I told him how much I loved the way he wrote Spidey and Strange and would have loved to see more. I think he was really taken aback.
I suppose the comparison with the new film to One More Day that people are making would be, if I had to guess, that by having everyone in the MCU forget Peter's identity it would essentially hit the reset button on a lot of aspects, somewhat like what One More Day did. I think the fundamental difference is (aside from everything you very accurately mentioned) One More Day undid decades worth of development and important events which was unforgiveable, literally resurrecting characters etc., No Way Home would essentially put Peter back to where he was at the beginning of Homecoming in terms of his social life, where there's not been much he's gone through yet that would be fundamentally changed, at least from what I can tell. All I can think of is his relationship with MJ and having a couple villains who hate him but can't exactly remember why (pretty sure a lot of what made Adrian Toomes compelling would be gone, and god knows how Mysterio would work assuming he's still alive). We've had a lot of people find out his secret identity in the MCU even before the ending of the last film, but I feel they've done very little with it, his relationships with Ned and Aunt May didn't seem hugely changed once they found out, so I'm curious about how his life will change if his identity is in fact erased from everyone's memories. Either way I'm curious
This is one of the things that made me abandon reading comics for a long time. Changes and changes taken to the worst. Until recently a got back into reading. Thank God for indie creators
Every time you guys talk about the marriage, I think about how utterly pointless it is to make Peter feel young when we've had major films and videogames entirely about Miles being the young Spider-Man while Peter deals with a different life and continues to grow.
It became pointless about a decade later when Miles hopped universes. It may have seemed like a good idea at the time to clean the slate but we didn’t really get any good relationship stories out of it. Remember Carlie Cooper? I don’t think most people do
even NOW marvel has ANOTHER young spider guy (SPIDER BOY) And they still want Peter to be a manchild that has no long reationships. What was the point of undoing the marriage if there are more young spider people. Like Peter stopped being a young super hero in the 70s , like 40 years of being an adult super hero and then OMD, OMIT and BND happens.@@superjlk_9538
I’m almost sure there’s an issue right before One More Day where Peter goes to prison and threatens to kill Kingpin if Aunt May died. Why would he then hire someone to go to the hospital and kill Aunt May when he knows Spider-Man would just come after him? I guess Quesada never read that issue but you’d think an editor or someone would catch that.
Breaking the Marriage cuz "I dont like it and i want to revamp spiderman to the way I remember him" is getting waxed on your chest levels of pain. Now they are trying to "ease" it over by making you pay PER hair with this whishy washy excuse is criminal. Also Spiderman going from one girl to a l l of the girls reminds me of those silly writers who like break the whole house while backing up their scooter.
It boggles my mind how stupid Joe Quesada must think we are as fans. I stopped reading superhero comics altogether after One More Day. Its like once the veil is torn it cant be repaired. Now everytime I look and a Marvel or DC book all I see is marketing.
The fact that Joe quesada wanted to do this in the first place is crazy but to have a talented writer like JMS come up with a timeline of very important Spider-Man events to change so that the marriage never happens and then to tell him they don't need to explain it Yes you do it's a major retcon and personally to me keeping up with the current marvel Spider-Man stories Spider-Man hasn't really felt like Spider-Man in a long time in my opinion and I know this has been said before but I wish they hadn't retcon the marriage having Peter and MJ grow was something that made the books interesting in my opinion
JMS was even going to bring back Gwen Stacy too, but there was a big debate in the spider-office and at Marvel and they decided not to do so. I kind of wish they did at this point honestly since we’ve gotten mediocre relationship stories ever since
I personally think that Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse (2018) did the whole unmarried Spider-Man thing much better. Like maybe if you wanted the marriage to end you could've done an arc as to the reason why Peter and Mary Jane split up is because she wanted kids, and Peter was too scared. Then maybe they could've had him building up their marriage again! Take notes by watching this video, Joe Quesada.
I'm surprised Quesada still has a lot of fans. Even his best artwork from looong ago is just kinda okayish to me. I truthfully have more respect for Dan Didio and other mediocre creators, etc.
I haven't had laughed so much out loud in months, probably years. Definitely one of my favorite back issues episodes. Just such a great show, you guys are amazing.
Ah Spider-Man one moment in time the awful sequel to one more day and destroyed peter Parker and Mary Jane characters for a literal decade god I hate this storyline so much because of how bad it’s especially for destroying both Peter and Mary Jane marriage for garbage.
@@faherty87 there was a story line called “sins past” by straczynski, where it was revealed that Gwen had kids and they wanted to kill Peter for abandoning her, and them. At first it was believed they were peters kids, eventually we find out that they’re actually Norman Osborns kids, Gwen had cheated on Peter with him. That was the jist of it anyway, this was all retconned in nick Spencer’s run during the kindred storyline, and almost retconning one more day in the process
Books like this and One More day are what made me give up comics for years. That being said it's fun looking back on them in a show like this Keep up the good work gang
i never really hope creators of these stories watch Back Issues, but man, i hope Quesada watches this for at least 10 minutes of this episode. he needs to understand how responsible he is for the worst Spider-Man story of all time 😆
It's amazing how many character assassinations Spidey went through in the middle of 2000s and is actually still one of the most popular characters... What is even funnier there is only 2 Spidey movies where there isn't MJ and even then it's Gwen... Which tells you exactly how popular Felicia, Betty or Liz and especially Carly actually are.. I started reading Spidey in mid 90s and I still go out of my way to re read older issues, even the clone saga but I'm still to re read OMD and I have not read OMIT or Brand new day and I doubt that I'm the only one
This book embodies everything I hate about Spider-Man. And the fact that Marvel doesn’t let him move past this makes it really hard to like him in modern comics.
Comic writers have this really bad habit of wanting to wind things back to how it was when they were readers. Many comic readers hate change. Between these two they get stuck in rut and real change or character growth is rare and often not lasting.
I'm glad that the MCU seems JUST aware enough of how dumb of a story this is to ABSOLUTELY do it in a different way 😭 There's almost no way MJ remembers Peter is Spiderman at the end of this 😞
Have Aunt May literally become the villain, with her slowly gaining more and more dark powers that she can't control well, but they only way to defeat her is Peter to let her go. Like, she's lived so long past her time that she's become a nexus sucking out the powers of Death and God. And it can't be a performative. Pete has to ACTUALLY let go of her, be happy for her to move on, and let her rest.
The thumbnail makes me feel like Comicpop caught me in a lie and they’re all reacting differently. Ethan: Not buying the bullshit Sal: Not mad, just disappointed Tiffany: Listening and just letting me dig myself deeper into the lie.

Like Peter stopped being a young super hero in the 70s , like 40 years of being an adult super hero and then OMD, OMIT and BND happens.@@superjlk_9538
At this point I want the MCU to introduce Mephisto just so the internet can shut up about him.
I kind of wish they did at this point honestly since we’ve gotten mediocre relationship stories ever since
Sal's Mephisto laugh never fails to crack me up.
The fact that Aunt May lived long enough to be shot is astounding in its own right.
she gets a new health issue every other issue and the thing that does her in is a fucking sniper rifle.
@@yurifairy2969
It's absolutely insane.
She's been in a state of decrepitude since time began and she gets done in by a Draganov.
love that the retcon story's acronym would be OMiT
Godamn the "Spider-Man: Let Me Die' joke was hilarious as hell.
If I was Spider-Man I'd just bribe Franklin Richards to warp reality to do all the stuff
I feel like one of Mephisto's names should be "The Red Pigeon", because he's shitty and seemingly everywhere.
Almost 100,000 subscribers!! Big time ✊
*Sees newest No Way Home trailer*
“Boy, it’s a good thing he got over people dying”
I'm really happy Tiffany and I had the same thought to go "One More Time" XD
Quesada was like "OMIT deez nuts!!! Hahaha, gotem!"
This is one of the funniest episodes I've watched!!!
"One More Time" - Daft Punk
"One Moment In Time" - Whitney Houston
Clearly, the editors are Whitney Houston fans.
Thanks for a great episode.
I saw the notification and did a Stone Cold Steve Austin celebratory beer chug, this episode is gonna be the best.
They should have cloned aunt May, then harvest the clones organs for regular aunt May
I feel like The Population should create a fun No Way Home Character Bingo card.
Ah Spider-Man one moment in time the awful sequel to one more day and destroyed peter Parker and Mary Jane characters for a literal decade god I hate this storyline so much because of how bad it’s especially for destroying both Peter and Mary Jane marriage for garbage.
Man that J Michael Straczynski run was FIRE up until the end. The 5 issue Digger story is a personal highlight for me
Let’s just forget sins past though
@@parkerramsbottom Sins what now? 😅
That being said it's fun looking back on them in a show like this
Keep up the good work gang
for some reason i can hear Sal saying in a George Costanza voice "Ho ho Sal's gettin' upset!"
i never really hope creators of these stories watch Back Issues, but man, i hope Quesada watches this for at least 10 minutes of this episode. he needs to understand how responsible he is for the worst Spider-Man story of all time 😆
Stories plural 😂
Even if he did, he wouldn't learn anything. The man is too detached from reality. But I'm willing to bet that he would be angry.
Sal will spiral into madness with the one mote time song
I can't get enough of Sal's Dr. Strange voice.
this was one of the few things i genuinely thought we'd never see on back issues. here we go
It's amazing how many character assassinations Spidey went through in the middle of 2000s and is actually still one of the most popular characters...
Everyone you love dies cause you don't love hard enough 💜
This book embodies everything I hate about Spider-Man. And the fact that Marvel doesn’t let him move past this makes it really hard to like him in modern comics.
Comic writers have this really bad habit of wanting to wind things back to how it was when they were readers.
Many comic readers hate change.
Between these two they get stuck in rut and real change or character growth is rare and often not lasting.
I'm glad that the MCU seems JUST aware enough of how dumb of a story this is to ABSOLUTELY do it in a different way 😭 There's almost no way MJ remembers Peter is Spiderman at the end of this 😞
the sarcasm is tough yall. REAL tough. I hope Zendaya remembers my guy Petey Holland at the end, but Mmmm😒
I came for the comic talk, but I stay for the disappointed looks after Sal makes a pun.
Tiffany's reactions are the best.
This story just made me realize how much I hate Joe Quesada and One More Day
55:48 Dammit! Mrs.Tiffani, I was drinking!
The thumbnail makes me feel like Comicpop caught me in a lie and they’re all reacting differently.
Ethan: Not buying the bullshit
Sal: Not mad, just disappointed
Tiffany: Listening and just letting me dig myself deeper into the lie.
Best way for Mephisto to show up
Black panther 2 posts credit scene

The end
That just seems like an infuriating read. Just watching this I got annoyed at it. Magic can't heal a person who got hit by a sniper bullet BUT it can wipe away the memories of god knows how many people in the world?!?
If you're a long time reader of Spider-Man at that time you could point out so many plot holes and stuff that does not make sense with this that it would look like Swiss cheese. Just so that editorial can shove THEIR square peg that they remember into a the round hole.
