Traditionally Carmine is a dye derived from the cochineal beetle. That place looks like artist's wonderland!
I am getting secondhand art store inspiration from this vid!!! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Was going to comment this, as well! I know it from yarn dyeing!
I just watched a documentary about them not too long ago.
Carmine is a historical pigment made from the cochineal beetle, a common name is crimson lake. It has and is used in everything from food to cosmetics to oil paint to being a traditional fabric dye. When used in food it is known as red number 4. It is a fugitive pigment and has largely been replaced by red number 40 in food and by synthetic red pigments like Anthraquinone and Pyrrole in paints.
Very very cool!!! Thanks for sharing your expertise! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Wow, there should be a warning on the door "if you are gravy about color, think of expanding your credit limit or skipping a mortgage payment before you enter" 😊
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! -Prof Lieu
Owe. Mai. GAWD!!!! Candy store indeed! Kaiteki Art is a Japanese artist here on TH-cam. She has some videos where she makes her own paint with these pigments, glue binder, etc. It's fascinating!
That's so cool! Even just watching this vid, the store seems endless. I know I'd be exploring there for hours... - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Wow, that’s like Willy Wonka’s candy 🍬 factory for artists 👩🎨 I really wish they had one here 😊
Seriously! It feels like a wizard lab! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
All those colours were like food for the brain!
Yes, I feel significantly happier after watching this! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
Clara’s excitement is so contagious! Not a traditional artist but I feel like going in that store would convince me to become one with how pretty the paints look (LOVE the pearlescent ones she got)
hahaha omg I was trying to not jump up and down when I was in there! -Prof Lieu
I want to goooooo. All the nice brushes lined up made me salivate! My sad Micheal s has the 3 straggly watercolor brushes every time I go.
It's so ORGANIZED!!! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
omg, I could watch that all day!!!!! Three minutes is torture! MORE! omg!
I need a 10 hour vlog JUST of this art store!!! It's so satisfying... - Mia, Art Prof Staff
That place is amazing. There are no art shops near me anymore, online only, so I dread to think what I would do let loose in there 😂😂.
I know, I'd probably spend my entire savings there... - Mia, Art Prof Staff
That wall of pigments... I paused the video to stare at it. It's so.. so... everything! And me stuck in a city that has a Michaels and a Hobby Lobby and that's it.
It's CRAZY! My color coordinated brain is so happy :D - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I would love to go there to see the beautiful pigments and supplies
Me too!! The pigments nearly brought me to tears. I want to go so badly... - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Carmine is the main pigment used for red in makeup. I’ve felt conflicted about putting crushed beetles on my face for a while now 😅
Cochineal beetles are also in food and drink with red or pink colour, like red velvet cake. They put some weird crap in food! Like Rennet is baby cow stomach, and gelatin is ground up animal connective tissue, castorium is beaver anal gland secretions, L-cystine, makes shelf life longer for bread is human hair. 😲
That's nuts... I learn new things every day on this channel! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
You did good with only 200 I don’t know what I would of done to my budget for life.
hahaha I was really impressed with my restraint in there! -Prof Lieu
Those flat brushes that you showed are called Deerfoot brushes and they're used for creating natural looking foliage. They're amazing!
I've also seen a Japanese artist the one someone else mentioned in the comments use these short brush in combination with a tube with a mesh in it to create gold leaf speckles over her work. I'm pretty sure the ones shown are specifically for this particular traditional Japanese technique for adding scattered sparkle. Kaiteki art on you tube shows you how to use these brushes with the tube for a traditional type of glitter but made with broken up gold or silver leaf
How cool!!! Tysm for telling me! -Prof Lieu
the Ezumi watercolors are absolutely GORGEOUS and seriously make me mad that I'm not better with them.
It's inspiration to practice!!! Haha - Mia, Art Prof Staff
You made me smile!!! what a wonderful (art-shopping) world !
It is totally an entire wonderful world in there! Thank you so much for watching :D - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Oh no! They have an online store and seem to ship to the US! I’m so screwed financially now!
Oh no, you had to tell me that? Now I’m screwed too. :-)
Aaaaahhh there goes all my money! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
I don't know what the Japanese use those stiff, short filament, flat brushes for, but Rosemary and Co make a similar type of brush called an Eradicator which is a short bristled stiff brush used for lifting watercolour.
EDIT: OH MY GOD THEY HAVE A WEBSITE!!!! They call that brush a 'pounding brush' which is used to apply gold leaf dust and just to paint with in watercolour.

Omg so cool!!! It's crazy how many specific brushes there are, all for completely different purposes! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Donc they have Web site ? Thanks
Gobsmacked! The pigments are incredible...but the brushes...oh my...I figure for any one of those large Hake brushes, you'd be parting with some serious cash! 😮
Just went on my list for our September trip! I’d love to look at the gold leaf tools and all of those brushes!!
Omg we hope you have the best time!!!! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
This shop is incredible and you're adorable.
hahaha thanks, I had a blast! -Prof Lieu
Amazing!!
I'm stunned. You could only ever see a store like this in Japan. Of course, no Japanese artist can shop there until they have apprenticed for 10 years (including 5 years of learning how to sharpen a pencil) 😂. Don't know if you have ever watched the 'why is it so expensive' series of videos by The Financial Times but they highlight lost and dying handmade traditions, many of them from Japan. The one on Hake brush makers is incredible. The video always starts with, first you apprentice for at least 10 years......
I haven't! The care and patience they invest in so many traditions is so wonderful. -Prof Lieu
Ohhhh my gosh, so many wonderful things!!
That peacock feather brush…to die for🤭
And I went on line to check the pigment prices: a natural earth pigment 500 yen and the ultra marine type blue was 5500 yen…wow!!
I know high quality ultra marine pigment can get pretty pricey, but it's so beautiful and brightly colored it would mesmerize me into buying it! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
I do need to go to Tokyo!! This is like the BEST eye candy ever!!! 🎊 😮❤🎉
RIGHT! I want to go so badly too! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Consider my mind blown! O.M.G!!!!!
Thanks for watching!! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Amazing!❤
Glad you like it! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
My art supply store carries those pearlecent pallets, I got one for Christmas and made my swatch page beetles bc that's what the paint reminds me of 🪲🪲
That store was a museum, so beautiful!!
Oooh what a great use for those paints!!! You're inspiring me to go buy a palette myself... - Mia, Art Prof Staff
What a beautiful store! If possible can you make a demo of using these pigments? I would love to learn more from you, you always have professional approach to any medium
We will consider it! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
Reminiscent of an old coloring book. Sneaking into Disneyland after midnight. In the corner, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec painting a national flag in primary colors. Sing it, Edith.
It does feel wild and interesting like that, doesn't it? - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Thats amazing. I would have a hard time leaving a place like that. Thanks for sharing that. 😊
I think the only reason I left was because my feet were falling apart! 😆-Prof Lieu
Oh my gosh!!!!! ❤
Isn't it a dream?? - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Those were hake brushes at the beginning of the video. Lol a kid in a candy store indeed, I feel that way everytime I go to Blick. What a beautiful store, I want to check out it out one day, and buy Pearlescent watercolors too!
Me too!! I don't know what I would end up spending more on, art books or paints. Probably both... - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Ahhh, paradise for an artist 🎉🎉🎉 and hell at the same time as you can't buy all that stuff 😭😭😭
True-- the beautiful materials are taunting us! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
omg! I was just here :) what a magical place
Really?? I wish I could go! It looks like a dream :) - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Heavenly 🤗
so relaxing .. 🤩😍🥰 in love
Glad you liked it!! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
wow, that place looks amazing. I used to watch some people make their own paints. I think they would buy the pigment and the binder and use some kind of glass to crush and mix them. those people would die (of happiness?) in that store. I would be overwhelmed by the selection although it is really amazing and gorgeous. I think I would want to live there and not have to buy anything. lol
I know, I would feel so magical there! Is it too much to ask for a decorative pigment jar backdrop in my everyday life?? - Mia, Art Prof Staff
It’s like a candy store but a museum but a boutique
The best combination IMO! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
I'm just speechless
It's truly insane - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I only spent $200 😂😂😂 it be like that. Why wouldn’t you? That place was stunning 🤩
i would need a bathroom , immediately , if i walked into this slice of heaven 😂😂 soooo beautiful !!!!norakag😬😬
Hahaha, it's that level of overwhelming! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
Artist Ellie Irons has written and illustrated a book called “Feral Hues” in which she demonstrates her journey on making paint pigments from plants. I think everyone watching Clara’s trip to the store will be interested. Read her interview in today’s Hyperallergic eletter.
That book sounds PHENOMENAL-- both in name and concept! I just looked it up & would love to give it a read. Thanks for the rec!! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Thank you so much for mentioning "Feral Hues." I subscribe to Hyperallergic but haven't had a chance to read this issue yet. I just ordered the book, if for no other reason than the title! It's backordered but will be available in September.
Those are Tempera and watercolor paints from Zecchi in Florence. Go there all the time. That is a burnisher
for gold leaf..
The gold leaf tools are so specific and satisfying! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Yeah the burnishers are cool....
@@artprof
Whoa!!! I would never leave that art store!!! Hold my brush … $5000 later…. I’m back! 😂😂😂😂
Right?! Imagine working there..I wonder if they give employee discounts?! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
❤
I'd be afraid of spending more at the art store than the cost of trave😵💫ling to Japan
Hahaha, right?! It'd be so easy to do! 😭💸💸💸 -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
Bougie. I love it.
Hehe, I'd save my $ for years to shop there! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Thanks for the video. Well, I already figured out that if you don't have $, you can roam in the woods & find some stick or small log to paint on. I never would have dreamed I could find paint medium there to: BUGS!!! Yikes.... Oh now I recall- people extracting color 1 way or another from tea, coffee, flowers, plants... hmmm...
"Dried Carmine Insects"- Google search results are minimal, & lead to a Facebook post, which informs we may have eaten this pigment, in some red colored foods???; quote: "The Farmacy · Fuata
Julai 16, 2013 ·
Carmine, or cochineal consists of a mixture of … crushed beetles. More specifically, these dried insects are boiled in water to extract the carminic acid they contain (or did contain).
--Typically, due to the fantastic red hue the resulting potion gives off, this ingredient is used to artificially dye foods red, purple and pink; in some fruit juices, berry punches, ice cream, yogurt and candy. - pamoja na Kierraisa FriendofGod na wengine 10"
Wow how interesting!! I like calling it a "potion". It makes art feel like something straight out of a wizard's den :D - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I don’t know HOW you made it out of there under $1k!!!😂😂😂
I am VERY impressed with myself!!! 😂 -Prof Lieu
you didn't know about carmine? i LOVE fine tec. what did you get?!
I had no idea!! I got pearlescent watercolors, opal watercolors, and granulated watercolors. -Prof Lieu
Not only will blow your mind ...but your wallet for sure😂
If I ever go to Japan, I'll be saving up my money for a year... - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I'll get bankrupt if I go there....
✨🎧♥️🤩😍🥰👌🏼🫠👩🏻🎨🥰
Hold on, you went to this magical artists' fairyland, bought $200 worth, BUT AREN'T GOING TO TELL AND SHOW US WHAT YOU BOUGHT?! This is cruel and unusual, you know.
coming soon: a stream where I demo the supplies I bought! Later this month. -Prof Lieu
@@artprof Hooray!!
the Ezumi watercolors are absolutely GORGEOUS and seriously make me mad that I'm not better with them.
