I can see it from Brandon's perspective but not Harry. Harry never truly believed in the code of iron. Harry only believed in getting to the top with his best friend. Harry betraying Millennium is not betrayal in his eyes since he always saw it as a tool for him to grow. He is Millennium. The code of iron is not something Harry sees he must follow since he makes it

This anime, watched it in 2007. Had a profound effect on how I select my anime. Can’t dedicate my time to any anime below Gungrave standard. Top notch and HIGHLY underrated
I remember watching this about 15 years ago, and loved every bit of it. An anime that is basically a Berserk and Trigun mix? Count me in! Oh, and that elevator scene it's still fresh in my mind, peak storytelling. You can see that while Brandon is shown in the light, Harry is in the shadows, emphasizing the diference between them at that point. Truly an underrated anime that everyone should give a try. Edit: forgot to mention, Big Daddy is Al Paccino's copy paste from The Godfather 3😂!
It is amazing. I could make a video just on the elevator scene. Even down to what they are wearing. Harry wears white while Brandon wears black. The level of visual storytelling, build-up, and payoff is a work of art.
yeah, this anime is freaking underated lol, just watched it and knew about it recently, not in your usual top 100 animes list but its an amazing show, i realized at the end it was a madhouse show, again XD, just epic anime
Only in anime can you have a scene of an old gangster and his zombified best friend have a shared schizophrenic episode/heart to heart in the ruins of a bar and grill and have it be a master piece, I’m not even being sarcastic, that scene was amazing.
If anyone enjoyed this show, I'd genuinely recommend Once Upon a Time In America. Its not anime but for those not feeling the deep dive into sci fi from the second half, this one doesn't do that. I wouldn't be surprised if Gungrave was mainly inspired by that movie and Berserk. Its a good watch but very dark so yeah...

Thanks for the comment! I came to my idea after rewatching Gungrave a few times. If you pay attention to certain events, you start to see that Harry did not do a lot wrong (If he did do something wrong, it was not telling Brandon what he was doing early on). Whereas if you watch Brandon, you can see he is really "clumsy"(Big Daddy calls Brandon clumsy when he learns what Brandon did). At the end of episode 7, Beyond the Grave wants to tell Brandon not to betray. This implies that Beyond the Grave regrets something. This can only mean he feels he betrayed Harry or Millennion. Remember that Lee betrayed Harry. I think many jump to call Harry evil. I'll explain. When Lee betrays Harry, guess what Harry does? He doesn't let his men kill Lee. Harry tried to talk to Lee. Harry does not act with vengeance but with forgiveness. This also comes up again when Big Daddy confronts Harry. Many forget that Harry gives Big Daddy the choice to live even after Big Daddy pulls out a gun. Harry even says he does not want to kill Big Daddy. He only kills Big Daddy when he loses it. He starts to think Big Daddy took advantage of Brandon. That Big Daddy is the reason that Brandon is dead. This scene is important since it tells us that Big Daddy and Harry see Brandon as indecisive. That he can be controlled. They don't realize that Brandon's indecisiveness led him to try to make both sides happy(Brandon's own decision). Brandon doing this makes Brandon a traitor to Harry and Millennion even though he had the right intentions
@@Ultra247 well brandon knew what harry was doing behind the scenes. Yes he should have ended harry because of his schemes and that he was going to betray and kill big daddy but couldn't bring himself to do it because harry was his friend. We both adored it entirely and quote it often. And I think I'll give it another watch soon. Also, I don't care what anyone says, I always say to start with episode 1. If it's by _intent_ to make me ask why, I want to see why when it's ready, rather than skip the question entirely for the sake of the "twist".
That's the beauty of Gungrave. You can have a totally different experience depending on how you watch it. Watch the first episode, and you will be looking to see where everything went wrong. All the scenes with Harry and Brandon will be full of suspense since you will wonder "why?" and "when?". If you skip the first episode it's a plot twist that surprises you. I think either way works but depends on the person. For me I watched not knowing anything about the show and watched the first episode. Easy 10/10
It was a great show for sure. Altho I'm a sucker for small fry building up into mafia boss types of scenes, so I too prefer the first half of the anime.
Love the review, glad some people starting to find this old classic! Also for the sci fi element parts of the mafia some people complained about, it was heavily adapted from the Playstation 2 Game, it wasn't a GOOD adaptation of the game itself but it had a story that could have been it's own, or at least they try to cram some of the sci fi elements it's going for in it. (Or even the animation budget and even sometimes it's over the top drama they present at some certain scenes.) I did wished it also focused some parts of the sci fi dystopian atmosphere it had even so it's game elements because it felt something was much more in that world rather than just the living with the mafia to make it big, survive a death to then later get revenge thing.

I never considered this underrated. Use to do anime watch parties back in the 2000s as I was the only one who could find anime from Japan back then online and was willing to wait a day to download it and Gungrave was always a favourite. Always was asked to watch this even though my friends and I watch it many times. it was either this, Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo.
Also besides anime, I think one you should pick up and do a complete story on. That's very good. It is scavengers. Rain is a new HBO show that I've watched a short of on dust a long time ago. It's an animation called scavenger. Pretty short but amazing. The fact that made into a full-length show is wild. I will say it's one show of the year
Brandon is a traitor out of his indecisiveness. He betrayed Harry and Millennion. He tried to play the middle ground and failed. He broke the code of iron when he knew everything Harry was doing and did nothing. He even said this in his letter. Then he put on a show for Big Daddy saying he would kill anyone that breaks the code while he was breaking it-Rewatch episode 16. As for Harry, he(Brandon) pulled out a gun on him. Remember that Lee betrayed Harry, and Harry still let him come back. Harry is not bitter when someone breaks his trust. He can repair it. Since Brandon had already said what he said to Big Daddy(Brandon lied), Harry had no choice but to kill Brandon. The funny thing about this is that Brandon knew this, which is why he wrote the letter. He knew he was between a rock and a hard place. He thought his best bet was to die and be risen if Harry did not protect. So yes, Brandon is the traitor to both sides even. However, Brandon still believed in Harry(to protect) and wanted Millennion to safe. He could not pick.
Haven’t watched GunGrave in years.. finally rewatched and remembered why I loved that damn show- the game is eh but the fact there’s a post storyline is dope 🔥
Many many years ago I watched the first episode of this, thought it seemed interesting & planned to give it time, totally forgot. I'm pleased to have my memory jogged.
This is truly an underrated masterpiece, and it's in my top 5 favorite anime of all time. Though, this video really should give a spoiler warning flag at the beginning before getting into all the talks of betrayals, as you spoil pretty much the entire plot. This is a good analysis for people who have already seen it, but I don't think it's a good video for people who haven't seen it yet. Maybe talk some more about why new viewers should go and watch the series in vague/non-specific ways, before getting into the spoilers and analysis.
Yeah, you have a point. This video is intended for people who finished the show. I thought if someone clicked on the video and did not watch the show, they would have enough time to click off after noticing I was analyzing the plot. I will give spoiler warnings in the future. Thanks!
@@Ultra247yeah, I just think it’s good to have that clear break between the intro and analysis, so that people know when to stop or continue. With a title like “Gungrave: Anime’s Underrated Sci-fi Masterpiece”, I could see this video attracting a number of people who haven’t seen it yet.

Unless it aired on tonami, gun grave will not make it into the annals of great anime references. My anime upbringing was Escaflowne, last exile, gun grave, whereas most people only mention cowboy bebop and Akira.

the pedophilic grooming ruins the whole show. Big Daddy impregnating his surrogate daughter who was Brandon's love interest?? made no sense and thru off the emotional weight of everything after that happens. AND HARRY GROOMED CHERIE SINCE SHE WAS 12 TOO! why did they have to ruin a solid show with this crazy writing choice? idk
@@Ultra247 it made zero sense that Brandon Heat would ever side with Big Daddy against Harry McDowell knowing that he impregnated his girl after grooming her since she was a child but gets k*lled by Harry anyway... after Brandon put the glasses on the writers just lost the plot entirely tbh and the rest of the series was a skip thru where everything felt motivated by contrivance rather than consistent character motives. it's almost like they designed Beyond the grave and wrote the story backwards from there... oh wait thats exactly what they did 😹 if Brandon really wanted to protect Maria and make her happy he should have been there for her when the pedos were prowling, but he just kept getting mischaracterized by the plot for contrivence's sake over and over until the conclusion. the show was really good up until he put the glasses on but they lost it after that fs
@@johnleemcmulln2168 I don't know how you arrived at any of your points. Brandon was characterized as selfless at the beginning of the show. Big Daddy and Brandon's relationship is built in the show. I don't know how you missed that. Brandon does not pick Big Daddy or Harry. He tries to pick the middle ground and hopes Harry will protect. Brandon betrayed Big Daddy when he lied to Big Daddy about dealing with any traitor while knowing Harry was a traitor. Nothing that you brought up was motivated by contrivance. Brandon did not like that he lied to Maria and that he killed for a living. He thought that Big Daddy and Maria being together would make his life easier as the two people he cared about most would be in one place. This is not the most brilliant idea, and Big Daddy even tells Brandon that he is clumsy throughout the story and even warns him not to waste his life protecting others.
Maria was already a legal adult by the time she was living with Big Daddy. It's your fault if you want to make things worse and see her as a child. Can't really defend the Harry McDowell part though
Maria's relationship with Big Daddy is weird, but it serves a purpose in the narrative. It shows how selfless Brandon is and makes Brandon's goal easier as the two people he cares about most are now with each other. Brandon is extremely selfless and lacks the urge to do things he truly wants for himself. Also, Big Daddy regrets not having a life as all he did growing up was build Millennium. He did not seek love. In a way, Big Daddy is a combination of Brandon and Harry. Harry in the way he rose to the top and Brandon in the way of personal sacrifice. Big Daddy taking Maria is weird but makes perfect sense within the narrative, and the "weirdness" makes the moment Brandon lets her go more impactful.
@@Ultra247its still weird, i understand the meaning behind it. Showing Brandon's selflessness but that age difference is you know he's gotta be in his 60s when they first meet and maria was a teenager. I feel like they should have made big daddy younger or something else maybe his son. I know big daddy had a connection with her uncle. If i recall her uncle saved him or something along those lines. Don't get me wrong i love the series just that romance is not something im interested in
I think the anime shouldn't have started with brandon being in his final form and then jumping back and forward personally it threw me off enough that i dropped it.

Inclined to attribute this to AI, in the past would consider your English not being very fluent or you're trying too hard to sound flamboyant, like you're feeding something through a thesaurus or translation software.
Lmaoo, my mistake. That's human error. I usually write my scripts late at night. The beginning voice is elevenlabs. I would disagree with my word choice being boilerplate stuff about characters when they are picked out from specific scenes and come from specific sections of books that I have read.
@@Ultra247 I didn't mean you actual descriptions of any characters, but literally that you describe what the vague concept of a character is to a story like you're reading a wiki entry or asking ChatGPT what makes a story or something, and then the fact that you're just describing the beat by beat plot by the time I gave up, so I can't judge the whole video. If you're quoting books, you should probably source them, I don't see anything in the description or annotating in the video.
I don't understand what you are saying. I analyze specific scenes and provide evidence from the show to explain a point. I don't know how that is asking chatgpt or using wiki. I even claimed that Brandon betrayed Harry. No one to my knowledge ever says this. I even show how I arrived to this conclusion. I don't know why you use the word "vague" when everything explained in the video is specific. I reference the books and authors I mention. If you want to learn more just buy the book.
This is a rip off of the God Father and instead of giving credit to the god father as where they stole the information from they lie and claim its original. Yea this is just a shitty anime that steals its plot from others. The reason this is called underrated or realistically the real reason this is forgotten is because of the copy right theft lawsuit the creators of this anime lost in court and the show was canned because of lawsuits it lost.
I'm pretty sure The Godfather does not own the mafia genre. Gungrave is also a sci-fi mafia, so I don't know how it stole from Godfather while it added another element that the Godfather does not have. Also, what lawsuit are you even talking about?

You almost forget it's a fantasy in middle of it and then boom
Keep up the good work King great work
I heard of Gungrave but I never knew it was an anime series
Brandon didn't betray Harry. He even left the letter saying he knew he couldn't kill Harry even if he had to.
Others hate Griffith, I hate Harry McDowell!!!
Hahaha
Haven’t watched GunGrave in years.. finally rewatched and remembered why I loved that damn show- the game is eh but the fact there’s a post storyline is dope 🔥
I hated Harry until Brandon said he couldn't kill his best friend. This anime was amazing.
I remember crying watching this show… i dont even remember the actual story.
Well that's why this video exists haha
Harry did nothing wrong.
I knew someone would say this. A+
@@Ultra247 HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH

Thanks. More vids coming soon
My favorite anime 💯💯
I still have the dvds somewhere lol. Def a gem
what are the background music, really impressive !
Tiptoe by Jon Algar
Feeding Pigeons by Magnus Ludvigsson
Mural by Hara Noda
I usually try to find songs that fit the vibe of a show. Thanks for watching. More vids to come
@@Ultra247 stellar work you did for the analysis, and the soundtrack, you have elite taste bro
Check out Banana Fish, basically a Crime/mafia story with A LOT of homoeroticism.
Such a wonderful story!
Greatness
That was excellent bri'ish impression, good sir. Jolly good show. Jolly good show. Most induboobydoobydoobyitlee
I actually saw the anime before I even knew it had a game tied to it. Really a roller coaster of emotions watching this.
Skip episode 1 .... start at epi 2
Trust me ur thank me 😅
Unless it aired on tonami, gun grave will not make it into the annals of great anime references. My anime upbringing was Escaflowne, last exile, gun grave, whereas most people only mention cowboy bebop and Akira.
Truu
Thank you for the awesome video~
I didn't expect to see some old gold today but I'm glad I did
Thank you for all your hard work, Please keep it up m(_ _)m
I hope your having a lovely day, Have a wonderful rest of your week, Be safe and Take care out there wherever you are (^=W=^)7
Glad to see YT giving small creators some love
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the high praise. More vids coming soon, and I hope you have a great week!
The first episode of gungrave to me was so bad but after that episode it got so great
I skipped the first ep so much better that way
Classic!
Song on ending is best
What happened at the end?
The show or the video? For the video it was just a fun easter egg if you stayed longer
Underrated? Um no. People that have witnessed this amazing anime love it. Including me.
Couldn't agree more
Team Harry. ✌🏼
It wasn’t Brandon’s fault.
I commented on different bits and so that way the alphabetum can start picking it up. You see man. This just had in 10k views. Now look were its at brother pick up some of the newer stuff to carb them at roght time That's why I mentioned scavengers reign. Not too many people know about it but it's going to be big brother. Believe me
I actually watched that show. It's really good. I might make a vid on it in the future. Currently, I plan on doing a video on JJK and Pluto. They will come out sometime in January
@@Ultra247 oh yes does are real good brother. Real good. You really know you're on top of the game. I just will just suggest. Like I said, doing a little deeper and now this is kind of like that analyzing evil on different segments because you break down the lore so we'll u made me watch gun grave lol even after the first few EPS I was like nope than I watch half way your vid watch the season came back n commented lol
@@Ultra247 surprisingly, there isn't too many gun grave anime reviews out there but Pluto man. Yes that will be very good and JJK phenomenal you plan on also going into stuff further into the magna ones I told you one of the best would be berserk since it's starting to pick up some good recognition. Just bringing up with new and t this is deeper storytelling that we need n I know will start ton pick up more traction at the endless amount of good stories to choose from and the fact that you picked is some of the best ones that I liked shows you got good taste for them ur Made for this brother
I'll take a look at the analyzing evil stuff. Thanks for recommending my videos. I'll start a discord once the channel gets bigger. And thanks for the praise I try my best.
great show great video
Great comment
I loved this
How this is underrated, this is instant classic from childhood.
Better than Cowboy Bebop? That’s a bold statement!
Is it based on a game not a manga?
Based on a game
@@Ultra247 Thank you, i was searching for a manga just to find out what happened to Brandon after ep 26 in the credits i heard mika say Welcome back
'im favorite. OPM second. ☺
the pedophilic grooming ruins the whole show. Big Daddy impregnating his surrogate daughter who was Brandon's love interest?? made no sense and thru off the emotional weight of everything after that happens. AND HARRY GROOMED CHERIE SINCE SHE WAS 12 TOO! why did they have to ruin a solid show with this crazy writing choice? idk
That stuff was definitely weird, but I don't know how it ruined the writing
@@Ultra247 it made zero sense that Brandon Heat would ever side with Big Daddy against Harry McDowell knowing that he impregnated his girl after grooming her since she was a child but gets k*lled by Harry anyway... after Brandon put the glasses on the writers just lost the plot entirely tbh and the rest of the series was a skip thru where everything felt motivated by contrivance rather than consistent character motives. it's almost like they designed Beyond the grave and wrote the story backwards from there... oh wait thats exactly what they did 😹
if Brandon really wanted to protect Maria and make her happy he should have been there for her when the pedos were prowling, but he just kept getting mischaracterized by the plot for contrivence's sake over and over until the conclusion.
the show was really good up until he put the glasses on but they lost it after that fs
@@The_Man_Who_Sold_the_World. wasn't maria attending high school at the time so she was a teenager still?
but yea harry was not excusable at all
I really enjoyed this series but the big daddy and Maria romance bothered me.
Yeah especially when we take into consideration that Maria only a few episodes before getting involved with Big Daddy was calling him uncle.
@@dudenamedzelda3179i know right. They should've just kept her with Brandon. Or something else.
Don't get me wrong i love the series just that romance is not something im interested in
That's fair
kids discovering anime...
I love this anime but dislike the game.
I think the anime shouldn't have started with brandon being in his final form and then jumping back and forward personally it threw me off enough that i dropped it.
Why?
AI script?
Nah. Why?
@@Ultra247 The different voiced intro with an oddly ending sentence, along with generally broken vocabulary like "unforgiven world"? Boilerplate stuff about what characters are.
