A lot of cereal products have been on recall lately, so maybe they're doing the ' better safe than sorry " routine, never know.

Don’t give up! Every day I go out it’s a crap shoot. I will never understand why they can’t donate or start to mark stuff down instead of just spending the time destroying it.
Some of the cereals are on recall for things like Listeria. My friend at the DG told me they were told to destroy the affected products so they could not be taken and make someone sick. Not sure this is the case where you live, but this is one reason they are dumping out some cereals.
Shannon you are a Wonder Woman with all you do. Dumpster diving and working long hours and taking care of your family plus has to be a toll on your body. Take care of yourself. ❤
It's time to contact your politicians and ask that bi-laws get set up that stores can no longer destroy and throw in the trash, very usable items. That they MUSt be sent to foodbanks, and shelters and such. Especially wit hthe world now paying more attention to climate change and how we are a USE and TOSS society. Make your politicians take a stand against crap like this.
But then the people who dumpster dive for a living would have to find something else to do to make a living! People do MAKE A LIVING doing this! Some people its a hobby or a side hustle to supplement their income but for some its their only income!!

Shannon, if the packaging on the coffee changed and the size shrunk they wouldn’t keep both on their shelves. That’s probably why they got tossed.

Hi Shannon, you're efforts never go to waste. I have noticed from other dumpsters dives that the stores are destroying every thing and it's really makes me mad! What a waste that could save lives of those in need!! They should be ashamed.😡😡

I work for one of the places Shannon dives at, I can tell you it’s all about liability. I don’t know if any store has been sued by a dumpster diver before though. I wouldn’t doubt the destruction comes from ignorance as well, which is really sad.
They’re doing the exact same thing here in central Florida!! So sickening that they would rather it rot than help hungry people 😢
You're saving things from going to the landfills and helping others at the same time.
Remember that many times the store employees are told they have to destroy things on camera or they get in trouble. One of my local stores goes through short spells where they destroy stuff. Most often there has been someone from corporate on their case about it.
That's OK. You did your best. It ticks me off too when they destroy all the food. Don't they realize that there are so many kids out there that go without food and all of what they are throwing away can be helpful to these kids?! It's a shame that they don't realize this. It's people like you that need to make them see this. I appreciate what you're doing and believe me, you will be greatly rewarded by your good deeds someday. I quit shopping Old Navy because of then cutting childrens clothing up. They should of been donating like I do so I hear ya Shannon

Yep. The same thing about locking dumpsters. It's not GOLD, people, it's stuff that others can use. Otherwise, it goes to the landfill and destroys our environment. They always say, "liability" but easily solved if they put up a sign saying, "*store name* is not liable for any items taken from this dumpster." Selfish company workers who just don't give a hoot.
Seeing all that cereal all dumped out really would tick me off too! I was thinking it comes and goes in waves, new district manager comes in makes it a priority then pffffttt 🎉 ❤❤❤😊

I work for a school and my brother in law is a CVS manager. We are required to open things before put them in the dumpster. It is annoying to us but it is because if someone would take it and eat it and get sick they could sue. Unfortunately in these days people are dushbags
I hate woulds, shoulds, + coulds. Insurance companies + lawyers make tons of profit on of them. Ciao.
It should be the dumpster driver fault if they get sick not the store and yes cut recall stuff but good things should be let alone so people can use them why full the landfill up with unnecessary things
That's always the excuse. Donate items to a food pantry or local charity. It's just laziness on the part of corporations in America. Shameful when they've increased the prices on food items with COVID, COVID, COVID as the excuse. THAT cannot be the excuse FOREVER!
I doubt any case like that would hold up in court 😂🤦♀️ it's just excuses plus if they donate they already have a law since the 80's that protects the store from being sued. Wait till one of them has to get donations to feed their family they will regret how they treated people trying to save usable items from the dumpster. It will happen karma is beyond real and it will eventually get you even if you are doing what your told you have a voice refuse to do it or just don't like TONS of people do because they don't agree.. tell them to donate or do it yourself. Stop just going along with it look up laws and do better!!

I've started DD'ing in the last few weeks with my daughter, & it's CRAZY how much we've gotten from just a few small stores. We've gotten bottled water, Takis snacks, cat litter, bottles of steak sauce, pks of hamburger/chix sand, brand new Spring decor signs, gallons of milk, fresh fish, duffle bags/backpacks from Goodwill dumpster etc etc. We donated a LOT to local homeless shelter & they were very appreciative ❤It is sad to see perfectly good stuff getting tossed...I am so glad to have found this niche of people who "get" it. We're not salvaging garbage, we save food from going to waste & in turn help needy people & help the environment.

I completely agree with you Shannon! My dad and I are some people who are struggling. PetSmart here will put the good stuff on the bottom and then put the reptiles poo 💩 from all the cages on top. Some places here have those huge compactors so there's no dumpster diving those.

I also found 3 boxes of Folgers coffee at DG on sunday. I was nervous that there was a recall but it was not. Same expiration date you found as well.

OMG I can't agree with you more! I am in Myrtle Beach and I used to donate hundreds of pounds of food & thousands of pounds of pet food every month but since last summer, every place has been destroying 80% of everything. It pi*se* me off and makes me sad.
It's a shame that these stores are being so petty! They would rather feed rodents than for the food to go to people who are truly in need of it. It's truly sickening and burns me up! I went to a Albertsons and a guy came out. Trying to say I'm looking for boxes but he seen I had some stuff. Went to put in car and he ask for it back. I didn't to make a scene but kept some and and through some to him and made him catch it. Lol Then he tore the bags up and put them back in. I'm new at this and trying to learn not to get caught.

I totally associate when you said gotta make sure nobody’s coming. Yeah I go alone too and I’m in the same boat. And yeah at a DG yesterday they must have thrown away like 20 full gallons of milk. If it was still good they didn’t need to throw all of that amount away. Yeah what a despicable waste of good food.

Yes our dollar generals put 4 locks on each corner and new dumpsters so i can't find nothing now in my small town and that is how I make it all month being disabled

Went to a Walgreen's dumpster they poured several gallons of Tide soap out on top of the trash. But I did get some items. Know how you feel Shannon.

I will tell you one reason they destroy stuff is because some places like where we dive the homeless (or so they say) make such a mess that the store has been told by corporate to destroy everything. Not all homeless are that way but there are some. When we dive if we see a homeless person we give them the food that we have and they are usually very appreciative. The reasons they come up with to destroy food is asinine. They could set it in carts and then who needed it had access to it. I think they would notice there areas would stay clean and nobody would leave messes or at least it would be kept a little cleaner. We have Family Dollar here in Montana and this is what the do. They poured out so much milk one time there was a river running down the parking lot. I will not shop there. So sad. Just donate!
You would think that they would put it in a cart next to the dumpster so you wouldn't have to get into it. too get the stuff.that way no one would get hurt. And the needy could still benefit from it. And there would be less waist.

Some divers have stopped saying which stores they’re diving at because once the stores catch on & see these videos, they’re destroying stuff or calling security on people.

Shannon, I would not worry too much about it because like you it will taper off and most people who work in the store don't want open mess up everything they throw out I just think there are so many diverse out now company that not make so easy and it is still a good haul and you are still our rock star
They forbid us from diving in dg's in my town in south Carolina it makes no sense to me or the employees but corporate says no we cant

Rite Aid is to Expensive. That's probably why the one in my town is going out of business just like Joanne's. Stores got money before Covid to make sure they didn't lose money. Now look, everything is sky high. I have to buy the cheapest food because I am on a limited income.

They were already saying a big f you by throwing it away to begin with. I know of a particular bread breakfast place that claims to donate to homeless but you can go to their dumpster and pull out huge bags of donuts and breads..

For the stores it's more lucrative to claim it as a loss on taxes than a donation. For it to be a loss it has to be destroyed. If it's donated by them or technically by anyone else it can be considered tax fraud theoretically. I personally can't imagine destroying food that way when it can help people...
