      I said the same thing, like you are in Asia , lots of rice. Plus I'd rather have rice everyday instead of having to guess what mystery meat or lunch the school had unprepared to feed us.

      +Luhan n Sehun's lollipop When I was in college, I used to make midnight snack with rice cooker. White rice with some canned chicken or tuna. My grammar school had a cafeteria. Lunch was actually good. Real food. They also had a "store" for ice cream and cookies. My high school was bring your own bag lunch (If I remember correctly).

      In korea people go to school since 7 am to 8 or 9 pm so they eat have breakfast and maybe dinner there too, That's why they have that kind of food, in U.S.A and other countries you just have a small break because you go to school for like 6 hours not 12, They give you snacks not lunch

      If you haven’t figured out by now, Koreans are incorrigible foodies. Food equates to love, life, meaning, community, joy, pleasure, wisdom, sense, rest, connection, celebration, etc. It’s the most important thing for the Korean, as it ought to be for all. What we serve up at schools for lunch in California are not fit for human. That ought to change.

      +najeedah maximin. You're right but cant expect a kid to want to exercise or crave heathly foods after eating a lunch full of processed food or on an empty stomach because they chose not to eat the twice cooked garbage. Parents are at home wondering why their child no longer eats vegetables now that they have started school.

    • @katrhoads2741
      @katrhoads2741 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +najeedah the kids are offered one fruit which is either gmo and non-organic or its from a can. The vegetables are from a can. They didn't come from the freezer. The one vegetable offer is full of sodium and has already lost most of its nutrients from being previously cooked.

    Your video is a great exposure to let others know about Korean school lunches. Thank you for that. However, I must add that your tone sounds very disrespectful. The Korean culture is very respectful and sensitive towards people cooking/making food for you (especially because of its history), and yet you sighing, remarking it as "other random things," and not really knowing what you are eating (mislabeling them, e.g. "fishes" were actually anchovies; "jelly things" were actually acorn; "mushrooms" were actually eggplant, etc.) were pretty disappointing. Hope you can learn more about the Korean foods and culture a bit more before you leave. Maybe you can ask your colleagues or students about them before trying to show others. Good luck.

    • @joewalsh5926
      @joewalsh5926 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +kmj Disrespectful? Seriously? Perhaps she's just tired of having to eat rice and rotted cabbage, along with whatever other scraps (that we in the US would consider garbage) that they find to "cook" every day.

    • @minjungahhh
      @minjungahhh 8 ปีที่แล้ว +173

      Being tired of eating something versus being grateful are different aspects. She can still be grateful and appreciative towards something she is tired of eating. Moreover, if she were really tired of eating it, she should just go buy her own food. Why complain, sigh, and show disrespect when you are tired of eating "other scraps?" By the way, you're very rude as well. I am sensing you are no well informed about appreciation towards other cultures. Please educate yourself, Mr. Joe Walsh. I do live in the US and I am pretty sure sausages and hamburgers are made up of "other scraps" that people will not eat in other countries.

      kmj Dude, you're just being a jackass at this point. Just stop. You're demanding that she kowtow to this culture. It's not like she was being openly rude about the food offered. The fact that she, as a clearly superior American, wasn't openly expressing her disgust at what those people call "food" actually IS showing respect. If she was really trying to be disrespectful, her language would have been a lot more colorful.

      How ironic. Why don't you take your own advice?
      Disrespect and rudeness come in a continuum. Hers was rather subtle, and I caught it. If the other party perceive such feelings, then, that is how one feels towards the person who enacted such impolite mannerisms. You cannot demand your ignorance towards an intellectual. Sorry, try again; or perhaps you will listen to your own advice and "just stop."

    im actually using this for a school project. i’m working to reduce single use plastic in our school. lunches are served on styrofoam, fruits and veggies come in plastic raps, milk, water and other drinks are always in plastic bottles, then of course there’s the chips which are again - in plastic, then there’s plastic forks, knives and spoons. of course some of these things are recyclable, but kids don’t really care. in these lunches there is barely any plastic used and it’s all relatively healthy food - very different from american food, trust me. if schools in america could find a way to effectively implement this system, it’d greatly reduce their plastic waste.

    hope this helps some people out! and of course im not 100% right about what she's eating cause I couldn't personally taste them myself but I've been eating Korean food since I grew teeth and im basing my guesses purely on the looks and her descriptions of the food.
    1st meal was a kimchi noodle dish and the broth is usually made from seaweed and anchovys. the rice cake is maybe cabonara ddukbokki. ddukbokki is usually spicy made from red pepper paste but there are other variations.
    2nd meal was curry udon, braised soy sauce potatoes, radish kimchi and kimchi stew
    3rd meal was kinda self explanitory. the soup is a spicy version of fermented bean paste stew doenjang jjigae
    4th meal was tofu katsu (which I think is a yummy veggie way to get ur donkatsu fix) and the soup is called yook gae jang. its traditionally made with beef but my mom makes it with chicken sometimes.
    4th meal the "tofu" is actually 어묵 (uh mook) which is fish cake. the chicken kinda looks like soy sauce braised chicken (jjim ddak) and kimchi stew again.
    5th meal fish cakes again but with bits of veggies in it with kimchi noodles and the soup doesn't look like yook gae jang but maybe they ran out of the usual veggies that go in it lol
    6th meal is hamburg steak which is really popular in homes of Korea and Japan. that's my favorite banchan too! it's spicy seasoned garlic stems called ma neul jjong in korean. the soup again looks kinda like doen jang ji gae.
    7th meal is jja jjang bap. its black bean sauce you pour over rice or noodles (jja jjang myun) and the cucumbers go on top as a garnish. spicy rice cakes dduk bokki. has fish cakes in it.
    8th meal kimchi stew again! the dumpling have tang soo yuk sauce on it which is similiar to sweet and sour sauce in Chinese restaurants but its a clear sauce no red dye yuck. not sure what the fried stuff is but could be green onion or shiso leaf. and that is acorn jelly called mook.
    9th meal donkatsu which is a breaded chicken or pork cutlet similar to Schnitzel. baby anchovies with green peppers in a sweet soysauce glaze called myeol chi jorim. the soup is called kong na mul guk. its a bean sprout soup with daikon radish. there's also a spicy version.
    10th meal not sure what meat that is but it looks like tang su yuk which is Korean version of sweet and sour pork or chicken
    11th meal looks like soy sauce braised chicken again. broccoli with cho gochu jang (vinegared red pepper paste) and Idk if this meal was on/after new years but it looks like dduk guk which is a rice cake soup usually eaten the day of new years.
    really enjoyed this video brought me back to memories of my moms home cooked meals

    I am a korean high school teacher. School meals are free anywhere in Korea. The government treats students with high quality school meals until they reach adulthood. This is why the average height of Koreans is excellent in Asia. It is also because of school meals that children from some single parent families do not miss school. Cooking for someone is an expression of love.😊

But also sad for our kids in schools in the U.S... It's just... Awful. I remember back in my day the square pizzas and nachos and stuff were pretty decent.. at my cafeteria, we usually have something like burgers, wings, tenders with fries and choice of fruit or veggie. People usually eat off campus for lunch because it school allows us.

    i love your videos so much kimmy omg and those lunches actually seem so yummy and kimmy ive been wondering how do you make a plan for whatever u need to teach like is it u that makes the plan or the school tells u exactly why to teach?:) thanks alot

      +Zainab Khelifi My school gives me the freedom to plan whatever lessons I want, but sometimes I do use their English textbooks as a guide for some ideas. It just depends on the school. Sometimes I wish they would tell me exactly what to teach because I run out of ideas. Having the flexibility to plan whatever I want definitely has its advantages though! I generally like to incorporate a lot of cultural concepts into my lessons to teach the students about holidays, customs, foods, and etc...It can be as fun as you want to make it!

      +Kimmyonaquest Do you have to purchase all of your own materials for class or do they provide any stipend to offset some of the cost?

    • @Kimmyonaquest11
      @Kimmyonaquest11  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't give me a stipend but they did purchase the things I needed for English summer camp activities. Other than that, I try to plan lessons that don't require much materials other than paper and pencil. I have way too many kids to provide supplies for all my classes (over 600 students total).

    In Australia, we have a canteen. You can order lunch in the morning, but majority of students pack their own lunch. You can buy snacks from there as well

    Very interesting to see how school lunch is done on the other side of the world. I think in this department, America has something to learn from South Korea.

    The US seriously needs to get their educational system in order. The nutrition is so unhealthy compared to other developed countries. Even lesser developed countries tend to have better school meals. They also need to scale the wage for teachers higher and really focus on enhancing the educational efficiency for the students. The US is such an outdated, unhealthy educational experience. The only real strength the US has in their school program US are the afterschool programs, athletic programs, and a more relaxed social atmosphere. Aside from that, the real core educational system is inadequate.

    Question: DO they offer a vegetarian option? Or will they consider to be rude if I don't eat everything on the menu that day/bring my own lunch? (I have a strong aversion to all forms of process meat and pork meat) :'(

    • @seafarer_
      @seafarer_ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not rude, just strange. They will very likely not offer a vegetarian option (it's quite hard to be vegetarian in Asia), but you could just eat the side dishes and rice and bring something small of your own to supplement that.

      +mOOnpEEls If they had jjajangmyun or kimchi jigae (meatless version) or meatless naengmyun or meatless mandu or meatless bibimbap or just sides. A lot of Korean dishes have some meat in it. Of course BBQ is out for you. But there are some vegetable only dishes (besides kimchi). You could get kimchi fried rice. Can't think of any other vegetable only dishes at the moment.
      Since you don't eat meat, you are going to miss out on a lot of Korean cuisine. I went to an AYCE Korean BBQ restaurant for dinner today. The previous day, I had Gamjatang (pork bone soup). I also like Galbitang (short rib soup).

    Wowwww, you know countries outside the U.S. actually serve delicious whole hearty food for breakfast and lunch and dinner for schools. Rice is really important !!! In america we got this small thing of cereal, for breakfast, cold bland brocolli , carton of milk which I never drank cause you never know and something they through together in tiny portion for lunch. I mean it wasn't the best but, I won't take it for granted, some kids had nothing :/ I applaud other countries for really taking time and money to provide quality food for their schools.

    Poor South Koreans... they have to eat food that's hand made, probably locally grown by their neighbors... that's just so.... 90's.... We here in America get to enjoy food that's professionally made from the factory, processed and sprayed with preservatives to insure we get it fresh!!! Backed by Monsanto's... who generously provides us with the extra kick of GMO... Yeah... be jealous....
