I was in the upper deck, Section 38 row 14 seat 6. The stadium was insanely loud. You couldn't hear yourself scream when he hit it. Hard to believe it's so long ago now.

Hard to believe it’s been 40yrs. I was 18, just out of Point Loma High. With my buddies at the Santana concert at the SDSUopen air theater that night. Before the show everyone was in the parking lot listening to the game on car stereos… When Carlos announced the Padres win and put a Cub busters t-shirt on his amp, it was the biggest roar of the crowd all nite. I still get chills thinking of it!

My brother and I were at my dad's house. My mom was still sleeping as she had to work graveyard shift at a hospital. I was sitting on my mom's recliner, so when Garvey hit that walk-off homer off Lee Smith, we shouted for joy. My mom woke up. The next day my parents told me to sit on the couch instead.

Remember this like it was yesterday. My father sitting there saying do not pitch to Garvey, no way not tonight. He could hit Bob Gibson tonight w/how he's seeing it. When Garvey raised his arm rounding bases my dad said- 'See you next year Cubbies.' Then the Cubs collapsed again in Game 5 w/ Sutcliffe (who was practically unbeatable second half of year) on hill & a lead. Ball thru Durham's legs on a ball hit by Tim Flannery, that led to a long cold winter on the North Side. And in 85 NLCS/ALCS went to 7 games & Cubs were a year early because no way in hell could San Diego beat them at Wrigley. If they played a 100 games Cubbies would win every last one. If they played a thousand, San Diego might have gotten 2 or 3. Might. That's how big the advantage was 4 Cubs playing at Wrigley during the day in 1984.

Listen to that crowd. I desperately want playoff baseball and most definitely want us to get back to the world series. That crowd went insane. People say we aren't loyal and also get criticized for celebrating every playoff win like a world series or a superbowl. I love that we celebrate like that. I refuse to curb my excitement for something I have been waiting far too long for.
Side note, Tony Gwynn is so missed on and off the field. Having a guy that can get on base in a big situation is important. I appreciate Tonys style of play way more than ever.

I was in Chicago, a huge Cubs fan thinking this is finally our year, andI’m 17 years old playing bass in a band at a private party in Chicago while this game was on. The whole time I was playing I was watching the TV out of the corner of my eye is a TV was mounted high and in the corner of the room I was in. Convenient spot for me to watch the game. All the people at the party were scanning up and back from the TV to watching us play. Here comes Steve Garvey and hits the home run off of Lee Smith. The whole party went dead. I literally was so upset I could barely finish playing the song. And the song ended and I told the band to give me a moment so I can recover. I was so bummed.

I was sitting in Section 8, press level. You could see EVERY pitch. The instant the ball left Lee Smith’s fingers you could see it corkscrewing right into the fat part of the strike zone and Garvey did not miss.
After nine innings of a steady roar from the fans the stadium suddenly erupted into complete thunderous pandemonium. The ball went 45 degrees to the left, disappeared out of view, a sudden curtain of beer showered down from GA into the Loge below us, then the ball dropped into the right field seats.
    What a night…absolutely electric.

The Cubs should have absolutely won the 1984 NLCS. One of those situations when the better team lost in the championship series. Similar to Cubs colapse in the 2003 NLCS. Although The 2003 Cubs colapse was worse than the 1984 Cubs colapse. Similar colapses were the Angels 1986 ALCS colapse that killed Donnie Moore also a former Cub. And of course the 1986 Red Sox colapse in the World Series. Bill Buckner also a former Cub.

Right he threw the pitch that Garvey hit for a homerun the Cubs still had so much in their favor to go to the WS in 84. They were leading the series 2 games to 1. It was a tie game in the 9th with Lee Smith on the mound hoping to keep it tied. Then everything changed when the HR was hit.
