Things can be very expensive for sure. You can get dirt at Home Depot for really cheap and I get my tree limbs and rocks outside. The only thing you will have to pay for is lighting. That’s the expensive part
2:45 I bought the same thermometer/hygrometer. I don’t have a glass enclosure, I bought the 50 gallon ecoflex suggested on your Amazon list. Do I just put the thermometer/hygrometer directly into the enclosure?
There is a question at the end of this comment, but some background: I have a female Leo that I rescued about 9 months ago. She's my first reptile. Originally, she was to be my oldest child's. However, circumstances have changed, and through no fault of my daughter's, the gecko is now mine. She was full grown when we got her, but her tail was very short (only about half of an inch long). I assume that the previous owner mistreated her and she dropped her tail, so the owner didn't want her anymore. Anyway, she's around 5 inches from the tip of her nose to where her tail meets her body, and her tail is about 3 inches long now, making her total length about 8 inches. I have been keeping her in a 20g high tank that I already had, with repticarpet and a few artificial hides, ceramic heat lamp, a cheap light, and recently a 10% UVB bulb. She's eating well, her tail is fattening up, and no signs of parasites. I think she's healthy enough for a bioactive enclosure now. So, I did days of research, days more shopping, and decided that with my budget and space, a ZooMed 25g (30"x12"x15") front opener was the best decision. I got that, the Arcadia 7% Shade dweller UVB, and a DHP with clamp light at PetSmart. Then, I went home and ordered the BioDude's leopard gecko 20g bioactive kit, a thermostat, and some CUC. I plan to put many hides, plants, and other decorations in, literally as many as I can fit while still giving her room to move around. I'll also make changes to the equipment as needed to suit her. I also take her out daily for enrichment, and she seems to enjoy running around on the counter or table, and I let her watch my fish tanks with me. Ok, finally, the question: Given that she's pretty small, do you feel that this enclosure could meet her needs for the rest of her life? Eventually, I would like a 40g enclosure for her, but I just couldn't stand her current setup any longer, and I'm sure she's ready for a change too. Bigger just wasn't in the budget right now, though, especially because I'd have to buy or build a new stand for it if it was any bigger. Also, I have another question: As I said, I plan to use a DHP for daytime heat. I'll also have the Glow and Grow light that comes with the kit I ordered from BioDude, as well as the UVB light. Do you think that will mimic the sun accurately enough?
Hey ChiefSweet do you own any frilled dragons or monitor lizards or tegus? If you do would you consider making a guide for them? I like how detailed and entertaining you are in your guides and would love more reptile guided from you!! Keep up the good work man! 👍
I use the ceramic heat bulb and LEDs because I have live plants that cannot survive the halogen temps. They don’t really have any negatives but if combined with halogen I can see the issue, too hot.
hey, just wanted to say your videos have been helping me out a lot! I‘ve never kept reptiles before and recently got a 50 gal (46”x18”x18”)tank for a leopard gecko. I have a 75 watt heat lamp but for the arcadia shade dweller, I just wanted to make sure the pro t5 7% would still work for that size? I’m awful with things like that and google wasn’t helpful lol
Yeah it should definitely but it does depend on how thick the mesh screen is. If it’s really thick you may have to use the Arcadia 24 inch 6%. It’s rare to have that thick mesh screen though.
Great video, Thanks! I also got 50watt halogen lamps (arcadia) for my geckos in 40 gallon tanks. I know this is hard to predict, but I wonder if surface temperatures will be correct if the distance to the basking spot (with black rock slate) will be 30 cm (12´´). I read this is the minimum distance from the uvb for geckos with hypopigmentation, like mine are. The enclosures will be bioactve. Any thoughts?
I’ve seen a lot online that if your temperature drops below 65 degrees to use heat for them at night it worries me it’s my geckos first night at his new home and i usually have the AC at 62 degrees so i’m just worried and wanna make sure he’s okay
Hi this channels great!! Im confused though....do i need to connect my uvb light to a thermostat?!? (Obv the heat bulb/source is connected to one). Thanks & love the crickets in the background 🙂🦎❤
Hey man a response would be awesome… I just bought a tank to upgrade my size and didn’t realize that it had a glass top… would a heat lamp a couple inches off of the top of the glass be safe?
Will the same halogen bulb you are using work for a red foot tortoise? Because I am using a zoo med daylight blue bulb and now I want to switch. I think the zoo med blue bulbs are okay to use. I’m pretty sure they don’t let off a blue light I just think the glass is blue. It’s says on the box it’s purpose is to mimic daylight and the light it lets out is a white/yellow light.
I’ve only been in the gecko game for about 30 minutes. Found a Mediterranean gecko in my backyard, my son wanted to keep it so I guess we’re keeping it. But an 18 x 18 x 18 reptile tank, what would you recommend for lighting and UV?
Is 13 watt 10.0 UVB bulb good for gecko in 20 gallon long? I have separate light for basking. Thank you so much for answering my last question too!! Really appreciate it.
Do you sell the crickets you breed? If yes, how do I buy from you? If not, any clue where I can purchase some that are healthier than pet shop stock? Thanks in advance.
Hi! i got a question im veary intressted to get a Leopard gecko but idk how to check uvb without buying a such a expensife solar meter do you know another method to check or buy a more cheaper and still good solar meter?
Where does the heating mat come into play? We are new Leopard Gecko owners and everyone's videos are so different. Our setup on the warm side is a UVB lamp that comes on at Sunrise and turns off at Sunset... for heat we have a heating pad directly below the UVB lamp. The basking area is steady at about 90 and the cool side is about 79-80. There are a couple hides and a basking rock all on the warm side. Is that a decent setup or should we also have a heat lamp as well?
Oh yeah some people set up differently some use heat mats and no uvb some use heat mats with uvb. Me I use heat bulbs and uvb to try and replicate the sun. Even though these guys are primarily active at night I try and replicate the sun as it’s important to the circadian rhythm and lets them know when’s daytime and night as well as provide beneficial uvb and heat from above.
Do you have any lighting recommendations for red ear slider turtles? Anytime I look it up most people are using the aquatic double dome set up. I’m just wondering if you think Arcadia is compatible for an aquatic turtle? Also are halogen bulbs safe if they were to get splashed on? I’m talking like drops not a whole “splash zone”😭 help.
Yes don’t use that coil uvb that comes with the double dome horrible for em. I’m actually making a red ear slider tutorial right now should be out in a day or two halogen is safe my red ears jump in water around the halogens so it’s all good
Hi got a quick question Can I use the Arcadian shadeweller for a 90 gal tank aswell? Or is it maybe to small? And is 75w enough for a basking lamp? I’m planning on setting up a 90 gal tank for a leopard gecko and I’m soo damn unsure if this lighting is good for that size aswell or not? Would appreciate any help :)
It’s about the height of the tank but 90 gallons I’d go with a 24 inch Arcadia 6% or zoom med t5 5.0 uvb. As most likely your tank will be 18 inches tall
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse aighty tysm! so still 75w for the Baskin lamp? (It is indeed 18“ tall terrarium haha) and what watt percentage would be good? 24w, 39w or 54w? (For the t5)?
I got one of those zoo med dual heat lamps and I was wondering if I use one side for a halogen heat bulb to heat up the tank and use the other side for a LED daylight bulb to grow my plants. It’s kinda hard to explain but will that work or do I need separate heat lamps.
Hey!! I'm quite new to this so just for safety reasons I have to ask - do I put the lamp directly onto the top of my tank? It has a glass ceiling and I don't know if it's okay to put a lamp just... just on the glass?? Like that's it?? Sorry I'm really lacking some knowledge and always thought it is way more complicated to do ":DD
If it’s a glass ceiling then you need to figure out how to either mount it inside or use a screen top. Glass blocks all uvb and the heat won’t transfer through right.
Hey, I have a question I hope to have answered. I was wondering if I should stop using my red light for night time because thats what I’ve been doing with the double light set up you showed on video. Instead should I use the halogen and incandescent during the day and no light at all in the night?
Do I need a thermostat for both the Arcadia shadedweller and the heat spot lamp? Or just one or the other? I’m about to order everything and used some stuff from your Amazon list, do I need to set the automatic extension cord to turn off his lights at a certain time?
So they aren’t full nocturnals they are crepuscular meaning they are active at the dawn and dusk hours that’s why they are very active when lights are about to go out and when they do. So they experience exposure to the sun and uvb just not a lot of it. Also the lights are very good for their circadian rhythm. Regulates sleep patterns better
Im getting a leapord gecko soon, i have tank but its top is wood so its not glass or mesh or sum. So how would i go abt setting up the lighting? Do i just use the lamp that can be screwed into the wood? 🤒
They have special lights for that like this amzn.to/48f0HfA also the uvb kits come with brackets to mount them onto wood for enclosures like yours! So no worries.
I'm new to geckos i purchased a 120 gallon 4x2x2 tank, i have a 50W deep heat arcadia with a Glow & Glow 16" LED and Arcadia Shade Dweller D3 7% UVB T5 Bulb 12". I have everything set to come on an hour before sunrise and then shuts off at sundown. Is my setup ok? as i am having issues getting the tank temps in the 90s, the highest ive seen is 80. I have the thermostat probes sitting on the slate slabs
I would ditch the deep heat projector and go with a 75 watt maybe even two 75 watt heat bulbs since a 4x2x2 is much bigger and requires a larger basking area. I would also use a Arcadia t5 6% as the tank is very tall and anything taller than a 40 gallon you would need to switch to the 6% forest t5
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse thanks for the help, do you know what length lights i should get? 22" T5-HO Bulb / 24 watt or 34" T5-HO Bulb / 39 watt . Also does the grow light have any size or length requirements or is the 12in ok as i assume its just for plants?
As a new and young leopard gecko owner. We just got 2 baby geckos who stay in the a 10 gallon tank together. And I have been worrying about night lighting with the day light and the red light lamps. Is it ok to turn off all lights at night in 60 degree F. I was told to have the red lights on but I don't want them to be in warm red light all night. I have seen other people who recommend heating pads for the night, but im not sure if they really need some kind of heat at night.
Well first off, separate them. Leos don’t like to be housed together, they’re solitary. There are people who say you can have 1 male & 1 female, or 1 male and a couple fems- none of that is true. Leos do NOT like to be together, and when they sleep on top of each other it’s actually a display of dominance. The lizard on top is asserting dominance. Some people have had Leo’s housed together for years without issue & out of nowhere one of their Leo’s starts attacking the other. Now onto the question you asked- don’t bother with a heat pad, Leo’s can absorb heat through all of their body, but heating pads are unnatural. If you’re worried about nighttime heating, get a ceramic heat emitter that produces no light
Hey I need a lamp for my leopard gecko for both light in his tank and heat for him to bask. I'm wanting to get a halogen lamp but don't know which one to get or what wattage, my gecko is in a 20 gallon tank and my house is generally pretty cold. Can you help me or have any recommendations?
Yo i got a question my only light source is my heat lamp, if i turn off my heat lamp at night during the winter is my leopard gecko gonna die on me (just got him today)
No he will be fine. Night time drops in temps are perfectly fine. However if your house is incredibly cold like below 60f you can use a deep heat projector at night time
If you provide rocks and wood it will keep the heat absorbed and will be released throughout the night. As long as temps don’t get below 60f they are totally fine. In the wild they experience winter temps right now is 41f. For almost 20 years keeping reptiles I havnet used heat at night except for two enclosures of reptiles that like extreme hot temps. All animals perfectly fine.
Great info,. i like the idea about the thermostat, i usually put on the basking rock. i rent a room and sometimes i open my big windows and sometimes i do not depending on the weather. do you think putting on the size like you do will affect those changes????

My reptile room is between 78-80f but the rest of my house is 72f
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse so do you think a 75w bulb would be okay for a 68-71 degree room?
What should i do if my tank is getting cold at night? just got my gecko
in the video he said it is fine if it gets cold at night where they are from it gets down to 40 at night
Hey, I have a question I hope to have answered. I was wondering if I should stop using my red light for night time because thats what I’ve been doing with the double light set up you showed on video. Instead should I use the halogen and incandescent during the day and no light at all in the night?
And should I invest in the arcadia shade lamp as well?
I have a 36x24x18 Animal Plastics PVC enclosure. What size light dome would you recommend? It will be my Giant Leopard Gecko's new home
Hello! If it’s 18 inches tall the Arcadia shadedweller 7% t5 and a 75 watt heat bulb should get it maybe two 75 watts if it’s 2 ft wide
Do I need a thermostat for both the Arcadia shadedweller and the heat spot lamp? Or just one or the other? I’m about to order everything and used some stuff from your Amazon list, do I need to set the automatic extension cord to turn off his lights at a certain time?
No just the heat lamp. Also yes turn off at night time usually around 7-8pm
@@ChiefSweetsUniversethank you!!!❤❤
Should I get a full spectrum led strip? I want my gecko to get uvb and uva rays and I plan on having live plants
Thank you in advance! I know you probably answer alot of similar questions
If you have plants 100% get the led strip as that will grow the plants very well.
Do I leave the Arcadia uvb lamp on all day when the sun is out and turn it off at night when the sun is down?
Exactly. Sun goes down all lamps go off
How does the shadedweller work with mesh terrarium lids. I know that they diminish the amount of uvb coming, but how do you set it up on the tank?
It does get blocked but works well with most screen lids. However some thicker mesh does block too much
Is this setup also recommended for albino Leos?
Yes
Btw is there a video on you making a shopping list on everything you need for a leopard gecko 🦎
I don’t have one yet but I do have one pretty close called leopard gecko tank setup
and i live on the coast of oregon but it gets hot here on the summer should i get a 25W bulb?
Well it would depend on the size of your tank. I mean how would anyone know what you need with such little info? People can't read minds.
Wondering how Geckos benefits from UVB as they are nocturnals and usually stay in the hides during the day. Is it really beneficial?
So they aren’t full nocturnals they are crepuscular meaning they are active at the dawn and dusk hours that’s why they are very active when lights are about to go out and when they do. So they experience exposure to the sun and uvb just not a lot of it. Also the lights are very good for their circadian rhythm. Regulates sleep patterns better
I cannot find any Arcadia uvb for my leopard gecko . Are their any similar uvb you recommend?
Depends on what tank you have but if you have a thrive 40 gallon with the regular screen a zoo med reptisun 5.0 t5 14 inch from petsmart will work
I have a 50 gallon. Is the one you recommended still good to use.
Is it ok to hang the heat lamps inside of the enclosure on an 18" high?
No I would put them on top of screen
do you have a video where you touch up on the subject of deep heat projectors not mimicking the sun?
I’ll make one I don’t think I do as of right now
Im getting a leapord gecko soon, i have tank but its top is wood so its not glass or mesh or sum.
Now moving on from that- 10 gallons is too small for a single Leo let alone 2
20 gal for a single juvi
40 gal for an adult
Can you please help me know if my lizard is sick or not
hi just wondering if 1-2 mealworms were to have gotten loose in a loose substrate is that something to be worried about
It will be fine they will just turn into beetles and you can grab them out then
Do I have to have heating mad underneath tank in addition to this?
Mat*
Nope just the lights
could u put there enclosure right next to a window
Would this work for a bioactive enclosure
Yes
Is the UVB that necessary if they're asleep all day in their hide?
Nope it’s just something that is recommended but they don’t have to have it.
Is that same T5 7% shadedweller good enough for a 40 gallon exoterra tank? Paired with a 75w halogen heat lamp
Oh yeah it’s perfect for 40 gallons. Little strong for 20 gallons
what is little string haha@@ChiefSweetsUniverse
@@FosterShaner haha stupid autocorrect. I was meaning it’s a little strong for a 20 gallon but it will work.
ohhhh i see lmao, im finally building my leo her bioactive tank. thank you for the reply and the help dude!@@ChiefSweetsUniverse
what would be the necessary wattage for a 30 gallon enclosure?
How tall?
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse 16in
@@amandaesposito02 I would go with a 75 watt on that myself.
Yeah usually for a 20 gallon I use a 50 watt halogen or incandescent basking bulb
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse okay perfect thanks! Would I need some sort of thermostat or dimmer for that or does the 50 watt emit a good temperature as is?
Can you make a video how to set up a 10 gallon for baby leopard gecko????
I have one how I setup a 20 gallon!
do I remove my heat Matt I have and use only heat lamp? Right now im using both
Yeah I only use the heat lamps
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse how much watts should it be for a 48x13x21?
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse In house temperature of 70 average
So I can use a 7% Arcadia dwelling light with a basking light of 75 W? In a 40 gallon tank?
I’ve been just using a 75 W basking light I know this is not healthy for her but I want to make things right
No worries that sounds great. Exactly how I have mine setup
Yo i got a question my only light source is my heat lamp, if i turn off my heat lamp at night during the winter is my leopard gecko gonna die on me (just got him today)
No he will be fine. Night time drops in temps are perfectly fine. However if your house is incredibly cold like below 60f you can use a deep heat projector at night time
So if i have a heat pad, i need a uvb light and a heat lamp?
Noooo just uvb a the heat pad
Ok how about if you use a deep heat projector but your reptile is near a window and gets plenty of light
Have to be careful around windows sometimes they can heat up quick when the sun beams through the glass. However regular basking is still king.
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse ahh ok thanks appreciate the tip.
NO HEAT AT NIGHT?! I just got my first leo a few months ago and made my own substrate mix. Controversial opinion there, friend!
Good to know!
@@G.r.e.g.g.l.e.s As long as it doesn't get below the minimum temperature range for them they don't need any heat at night. That's natural
Great info,. i like the idea about the thermostat, i usually put on the basking rock. i rent a room and sometimes i open my big windows and sometimes i do not depending on the weather. do you think putting on the size like you do will affect those changes????
Yes putting it on the side might affect those changes. As always you may have to play around with it
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse the weather here in Oxnard California can change from one day to another. even tho we are in Des some days are been around 80 degrees an some days around 60. whats the best solutions about that ?
@@reginojacobo1050 is this room temps as well?
yes
What if your incandescent heat bulb advertises that it radiates UVB? Is that just deceptive marketing?
The only one that would would be a mercury vapor bulb which I don’t recommend
@@ChiefSweetsUniverseThanks! I was worried that my heat bulb would not have high enough levels of UVB (or any at all) so last night I bought a Shadedweller light. I like it so far!
Hopefully this helps my gecko eat more, he won’t eat and I think it’s because he doesn’t have a light, but has a heat lamp. No light.
