the backwards audio works so well because as humans, it’s typical for a whistle to start of loud but then controlled. death’s whistle winding up like that adds to the feeling of “this thing isn’t of this world”
Right? Didn’t think about that but it makes sense It has that “uncanny valley” that makes your skin crawl because it feels so unnatural, you know it isn’t right, and so your instincts are telling you to run
The reason Death's whistle creeps me out so much is because I usually associate it with old people whistling because my grandfather before he died always used to whistle
It really does! Imagine this. During one of Puss' rampage of reckless abandon, he somehow goes off-script and *did* lose all 9 of his lives before the events of the movie. Be it by Fairy Godmother nonsense or by some other miracle, something that was not supposed to happen ended up happening. A life that was not supposed to flicker and fade away like the single flame of a candle that's been blown into nothing. Expecting to wake up at a hospital, he instead found himself near a river. The weather was cloudy with dense most and from beneath his body Puss can feel sand. A beachside? Not quite. Puss got up and tried to gather his surroundings, and when he turned to the seemingly endless river beside him, he saw none but a riverman donning a cloak and a hood that hid his visage under shadow as he turned to Puss, standing on his small boat above the ominous sea. The presence of this river person felt calming, like a heavy weight was lifted from above Puss' head, and yet Puss could shake the feeling of dread that made the orange cat's hair rise up. The figure who was standing there then spoke. "Wake up, gatito. This is not your end yet." A mix of confusion and dread started to linger in Puss' mind, but before he could process the emotion, with a snap of the riverman's finger, Puss felt sunken, like his chest and subsequently his whole body was being sucked from the inside out by a vacuum. And when he came to, he had awoken, right where he had originally died, back in one piece.
