Wonderful Spector production of Sonny Charles and Checkmates Ltd; never a hit but a terrific sound to use as a tribute to the world's greatest record producer.
I don't know how many more times I can say this or make it more clear; this is a tribute to Phil's enormous talent in music. I feel exactly the same about Joe Meek. For morality judgements go elsewhere. Wonderful productions; classic works of art; once again, thank you for the music Phil.
I don't consider his criminal trial when I hear his music. Regardless of what he did apart from music production, he was and is a genius. Andd so was Sonny Charles. Thank you Jon for sharing this wonderful tribute with the TH-cam community. This is my all-time favourite song.
@Gerry50ify Gerry, I'm Bobby Stevens. I co-wrote with Phil "Love is all I have to give." and sang the lead vocal. I just came across this site. I am dissapointed that I wasn't mentioned nor given credit for being the leader & lead singer from the group's inception, The group had been together for 15 years when they recorded "Love" they should have been given credit for their contribution to the album also. Bobby Stevens
No, I met Phill when A&M whom we signed with slected him to produce our first album on that label. He asked me to work with hime on a song idea & Love is all I have to Give is the result of our work. Bobby Stevens Leader Checkmates Ltd.
I don't consider his criminal trial when I hear his music. Regardless of what he did apart from music production. he was and is a genius. And so was Sonny Charles. Thank you Jon for sharing this wonderful tribute with the TH-cam community. This is my all-time favourite song. And I agree with your comment re the violin solo. Awesome!!
I remember when I first heard this song in 1969, I had to stop and turn the radio up and just listen. There is no doubt who is involved with this sound, in the same vain as Righteous Bros. and the Walker Bros., but so hurting. I have about 2K 45's, even though I never collected, but when I look thru them I find so many associated with the man "Phil", a pure genius with his music. Is there anyone else with the signature sounds like Phil Spector. I second that. Phil; Thank You for the music
It should have been a hit in the U.S. It remains one of the most shattering love songs ever. How Spector could throw this kind of talent away remains a tragic mystery.
I have loved this song ever since I first heard it, long time ago. So glad to see that there are more people who appreciate the absolute beauty of it. I may hit the repeatbutton 20 times, and each time again it leaves me with goosebumps all over and tears running down my face.
Brilliant Jonathan thanks for posting.great memories for me.Agree with all that you say re: Phil Spector for me he is the god of music producers, not going to see the likes of him again.
Phil was a tremendous producer. Jonathan thanks for posting. His music will be appreciated for generations to come. I wish you would post more from this album. It was a truly great album that you can't find anywhere.
I know Mr. Spector (not met him - know him). I'm honored that he talks to me. He's incredibly intelligent. I don't believe he did it. I think it's a horrible, tragic situation. I spoke to Mr. Spector during his 2nd trial & told him briefly what I thought happened. He just...chuckled.
Thanks for posting. This song is very reminiscient of The Righteous Brothers.Think it charted in the high 60's in March 1969.Their bigger follow up hit was "Black Pearl".I think it made it to #13 in April/May 1969.The album was good especially the Spector produced side.
Any normal person must be sad when anyone dies; and unfortunately no thinking person these days believes in any "justice" systems; I have no knowledge of Phil's guilt or innocence but his genius is proven. Thank you for the music Mr Spector.
Sonny & The Checkmates' "Love Is All I Have To Give" is classic Phil Spector sound ... energetic and dramatic collaboration of word and sound. I'd like to commend you for putting together a very nice and thoughtful video that really gives proper credit for the music itself. I myself have appreciated for quite some time now the innovative and unique approach that Spector brought to the business. Regardless of the lyric/singer, the production quality made all the songs interesting. Nice post. A+
how do you know who phil did and didnt meet in his lifetime?i found it to be a touching tribute. one day i was a kid in a garage band, the next i was playing with Joan Jett in the Runaways. one dosnt have to be "in crowd" to meet famous people, you just have to be in the right place at the right time.Laurie McAllister
I think this is one of Phil's greatest productions with all stops pulled out. Mr. King, EVERYONE'S GONE TO THE MOON and the flip SUMMER'S COMING both hold a special place for me also. Phil's life caught up with him. An article I clipped out decades ago shows hin pointing a gun at a camera man with a crazed look on his face. His bodyguard prevents him from pulling the trigger.
Hi Jonathon, There's a wonderful recent interview up here on You Tube with Hal Blaine on Phil Spector in which, besides some wonderful insights into their working relationship and instrumentation I'm sure you'll appreciate, he mentions a not isolated kindness of Phil's to Sonny Bono (I won't spoil it for you); very much in keeping with his message to you. Thank you for sharing this with us. In the Bible, it says, let he who hasn't sinned cast the first stone ..
Can't get over how much the lead vocal on this sounds like Righteous Brother Bill Medley. The later smash hit, Black Pearl, had an entirely different lead.
His wife said that Phil's never said what happened -believing he'd not be found guilty. I'm terribly sorry for the Clarkson's loss. Mr. Spector IS a character. He does 'play' it up. I think Mr. King's tribute is beautifully touching - & sad (to me). I wish, I wish..... Thank you, Mr. King & thank YOU, Mr. Spector.
This is such a soulful and heartfelt song, one of my favorites. Another tremendous production by the great Phil Spector, the man really knew how to put a sound on vinyl. Phil was like a drunk that walked the fine line between genius and crazy, it's a shame that crazy won.
I did not realize it at the time but most of my all-time favorites were his. He must surely be the Beethoven of modern Popular music. Shame about the recent unpleasantness.
I suspect Phil, like me, is happy to choose between those who admire his work and those who toe the tabloid line. It is so easy to believe the headlines.
The lead on this song is Bobby Stevens the leader & lead singer for the Checkmates Ltd from their inception. He also co-wrote this song with Phil Spector. He left the group he founded without performing another song on the album because of contract dispute with the label over publishing & "B' side producing rights Thus, leaving S. Charles to finish the album.
Discussions about Phil's guilt or innocence are really not appropriate here and we won't be approving any more. It's his talent, art and contribution to music we are here to praise.
Once again I repeat; this tribute is for the great producer and his wonderful music. I neither know about nor condone any violence towards anyone, be it physical or legal.
@JonKing2007xx Alot of celebrities...O.J., Pete Rose, Phil spector, Bill Clinton, just to name a few, have gotten into trouble and had their talents stripped from them. Remember what they did.....especially the "wall of sound"
@SuperEasterngirl You're not alone. I will forever believe his past actions is what convicted him,,the gun stuff and all,,I also believe it was a terrible accident and Phil did the wrong thing when he told that chaffeur "I THINK I JUST SHOT SOMEONE".
He locked his ex-wife in their mansion & refused to let her leave (even hiding her shoes), he showed her a glass coffin he had purchased & threatened to put her in it if she ever left him, he refused to let anyone turn the lights on his house for fear of someone seeing his balding head, and he even locked his teenage son in his bedroom for weeks at a time (not even allowing him out to relieve himself, his son had to relieve himself in a bucket Phill allowed him to have).
1951: 'phil like a cowboy would later on in life rely upon his trusty M-16 which he would casually but seriosly draw from his inner pocket of his velvety blazer threatening the back-turners of his MASTER creations eliminating thier ignorance, honestly re-moulding thier view on his gifts to the planet.' maybe the work of god and satan
I agree that what Phil did (from the evidence supporting the case) was a horrible thing but as far as I'm concerned he's a musical genius - or for those to thick to read that: Phill Spectrum dun sum gud choons an dat but he shunt av kilt dat bird n wotnot
As usual, a tiny minority of brain dead morons are spewing bile whilst the intelligent majority appreciate the quality of the music. I'm delighted that Phil himself sent me a complimentary message thanking me for this tribute.
Well Hedge; in that case you and others who choose to judge art by morality will miss out on a lot of great work. My idol is Dickens - whatever his private life contained. Ditto Shakespeare. And Ronnie James deserves better respect for his art, whatever his life. Incidentally I assume you only condemn if the media and judicial systems tell you to? What you don't know doesn't count? You must have greater faith in those than they warrant.
Innocent until proven guilty went out of the window years ago, thanks to the dear old media, and the Internet hasn't improved that situation; bigots will be bigots no matter how much information they get.
I can see admiring his earlier career and his pioneering work w/ his "wall of sound" technique.. but going as far as to say you love him and admire him is sorta sick. Even if you disregard his obvious guilt in the latest mistrial, I'll explain my point...
Jonathan, sorry to put down your little tribute but, as you know, this Spector guy murdered someone by sticking a gun in their mouth and pulling the trigger. Someone like that doesn't deserve a tribute like this.
@JonKing2007xx And you Jon King what kind of man are you?Your showing no respect for Ms Clarksons family. So your in love with Spector, this is a time when you should keep it to yourself.
Possibly the greatest music producer of all time.
I don't know how many more times I can say this or make it more clear; this is a tribute to Phil's enormous talent in music. I feel exactly the same about Joe Meek. For morality judgements go elsewhere. Wonderful productions; classic works of art; once again, thank you for the music Phil.

they always say there is a very fine between insanity and genius
Whether Phil Spector is guilty or not, he gave my generation some truly great music. And for that I am grateful. Thanks for the video.
Peace

A God amongst men
Spectors best example of production.
Absolutely his pinnacle
great record, one of my fav 45

A great talent, I will never forgt the contributions he made to rock n roll

fantastic song this is
one of my all time favorites.
You can enjoy Phil's music even though you may not like what he has done in his personal life. Why is that so difficult to understand for some people.
Hi Jonathon,

amen !
Loved he music Phil made...but the man is way sick.
That gypsy violin at the end gets me every time!

An eye for an eye is a perfectly acceptable morality for many Hedgeweed but not for me. Nastiness never justifies nastiness.
Hytrees, you are clearly a class act.
i think he started to believe the storys about him being eccentric the more wild they became the more wild he became
Once again I repeat; this tribute is for the great producer and his wonderful music. I neither know about nor condone any violence towards anyone, be it physical or legal.

This is such a beautiful song, almost a tearjerker!
Do you have Sonny Charles & the Checkmates's version of PROUD MARY?
01:56...crazy and funny look..!!!!
It could have been better, you just showed the same pic's over and over....thank you!!
omg is this the real jonathan kings youtube profile???
19 years for a 70 year old? Justice globally is rarely just, never humane or decent.
i'm so happy that Phil is still behind bars and is staying there. P.S. This is a nice song
I suspect your Jewels in the snow are yellow.
@djmrbrown00 RIGHT ON !!
@SuperEasterngirl You're not alone. I will forever believe his past actions is what convicted him,,the gun stuff and all,,I also believe it was a terrible accident and Phil did the wrong thing when he told that chaffeur "I THINK I JUST SHOT SOMEONE".
Hi Nona - I'll see what I can do!
Actually i would wager Jonathan did meet Phil, he was a big hitter in the BBC several years ago, why the beef, jealous?
He locked his ex-wife in their mansion & refused to let her leave (even hiding her shoes), he showed her a glass coffin he had purchased & threatened to put her in it if she ever left him, he refused to let anyone turn the lights on his house for fear of someone seeing his balding head, and he even locked his teenage son in his bedroom for weeks at a time (not even allowing him out to relieve himself, his son had to relieve himself in a bucket Phill allowed him to have).
dommage on a une pensee pour ses parents de la defunt paix a sont ames
il est aujourd'hui condamné à 15 ans de prison pour meurtre
qu'il soit maudit d'avoir pris une vie
1951: 'phil like a cowboy would later on in life rely upon his trusty M-16 which he would casually but seriosly draw from his inner pocket of his velvety blazer threatening the back-turners of his MASTER creations eliminating thier ignorance, honestly re-moulding thier view on his gifts to the planet.'

Don't like the melody or lack of melody on this song. Background music is good but it just doesn't have any type of hook.
@JonKing2007xx And you Jon King what kind of man are you?Your showing no respect for Ms Clarksons family. So your in love with Spector, this is a time when you should keep it to yourself.
One grossly over-rated weirdo salutes another.
