  • Anddddd one last spiking video for good measure!
    So this pretty much wraps up all the info I have on wig spiking. Hopefully I covered everything in this video that I might have missed in the other videos. I'm thinking since I touched on it, but wasn't really able to show it up close, I might make a video dedicated to the different techniques for cutting wigs that I use so you all can see a break down on that.
    Anyways, I hope you find this helpful! Let me know if there are any other kind off tutorials you'd like to see and I'll do my best to demo them for you guys (given I have the supplies on hand haha)

      If you use it on low heat it should be okay, but definitely test a small section before using it on noticeable sections of the wig. Most wigs you find nowadays are likely heat resistant, but as a general rule of thumb, the more plastic-shiny a wig looks, the less likely it's heat resistant and vice versa.

    How do you make Midoriya's wig with the slight curl on the spikes? Surely it's more complicated? When I try styling usually I have to use a ton of hairspray and then the wig is all disgusting and the spikes start splitting :(

    • @LunaLenCosplay
      @LunaLenCosplay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      What I do is take the section I want to spike and use a curling iron to curl the end of the hair before applying any kind of hairspray. Hold it in place while it cools and then when you go to spike it, the end will curl in the direction you want! :) Sometimes though, depending on the wig and the intensity of the curl you want, you can sometimes manipulate it with just the heat from the hair dryer and your hands
      And if you're spraying the hairspray too close, that can cause your spikes to become clumpy and start splitting apart. Too much hairspray can do that too, but usually it's from spraying too close. I usually only spritz the hair spray very lightly when I'm using it for the initial styling and then let it dry before applying more in heavier amounts to really seal it.
      Hopefully that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

    I just want to know how you would ship a styled wig in the mail

    • @LunaLenCosplay
      @LunaLenCosplay  6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      What I personally do to ship a styled wig, is find a box that is large enough to contain the wig and the wig head it's on, without it brushing up against the top or sides. Usually a 14x14x14 box will fit things like Sora or Roxas on a small female wig head. Then I hot glue the wig head into the box and add packing tape to the base of it for extra security to hold it down. Then I put the wig onto the head and secure it with some T-Pins, since they have more to the top of them to hold the wig on. The best places for the pins is usually, one in the top, and one at each ear, so 3 total.
      This in theory SHOULD secure it enough for transport, though if you are shipping it ground via USPS they tend to be really rough with the boxes, so you may want to add extra tape/pins, but if it's going Priority it should make it in one piece! I hope this helps!

      A TON of teasing and playing around with the angle of the hair to try to hide it. • @Merenq
    @Merenq 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried to spike a wig one time but didn't know how to do it properly, so I don't want to repeat the same mistakes on my other wig.
    I'm going to do a Keebo wig from Danganronpa V3 and I have few questions.
    1. Should I also section the length of hair that I need before cutting it?
    2. What should I do to prevent spikes from not sticking together?
    3. How long did you style a wig like this?
    (Hope I'll get the answer and sorry if i made some mistakes, English is not my main language)

    • @LunaLenCosplay
      @LunaLenCosplay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! I'm gonna do my best to answer!
      1) For me, I find it easier to section out the spikes I want when they have a very specific place they need to go. For Keebo, it might be a helpful step to section out your hair before you begin cutting, just because his silhouette is very specific. That and sectioning before hand takes away some of the fear of cutting things wrong haha
      2) I'm not 100% on what you're asking here, but I'll answer two ways! If you want to prevent your spikes from not sticking together (a.k.a making sure they hold at the ends?) I always use a little bit of clear glue and twist the hair together at the tip with it. This should make sure the spike doesn't come apart at the ends! If you were rather asking how you get your spikes to not stick to other spikes? Then I'd say if they do lean on another spike and become stuck while working, you can gently pull them apart with your fingers, and brush them back into shape with a brush (I like to use a teasing brush for this)
      3) For a Roxas wig, it takes me about 4-5 hours to style it from start to finish (though I recommend taking breaks in between sections to stretch and wash the hairspray off your hands!)
      I hope I answered your questions okay! If I didn't or you have any other questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to respond! (And your English is great! I would have never known it wasn't a main language without you saying so!)

      @@Merenq You can probably use a Styrofoam ball or honestly anything that you can sit the wig on if you can't find a Styrofoam head! Back in the day I used to style the front of all my wigs while they were on my own head, but when it comes to the back you're going to want something to sit it on!

    • @LunaLenCosplay
      @LunaLenCosplay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you were to do this to your own hair, teasing and hairspray plus the blow-dryer should work, that being said it takes me about 4-5 hours with no breaks to style something like Roxas with as many spikes as he has... SO if you're going to do this to your own hair I'd definitely go for a more "naturalized" look with more of the general shape and swoops to save time

  • @HollyJollyAru

    This is an amazing tutorial and your work is fantastic! I have I ask tho in regards to the “never have to restyle” comment, does that mean you don’t wash your wig? I’ve always been afraid of doing cosplays with highly styled wigs cause the moment I go to wash it, all the work I paid a commissioner to do goes away.

    • @LunaLenCosplay
      @LunaLenCosplay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! :)
      As far as "washing" a wig is concerned, the only time I truly wash an entire wig that's heavily styled is when I'm trying to wash the product out to restyle it. SO if that's your goal with a heavily styled wig then go for it!
      However, with heavily styled wigs, if I feel I've sweated in them a lot or worn them a lot and think they're dirty, I take a soapy wash cloth and just wipe down/scrub the inside of the wig cap (not the actual hair). That's where all the dirt and sweat is going to build up on your wig anyways (unless you've been rolling through the dirt in your wig haha)
      That should get it clean again without ruining all that hair work on the styling! You don't really need to worry about the synthetic fibers unless it's looking visibly dirty, since it's just plastic.
      I hope that helps!

      If it's a long wig I'll also add hair nets to try to keep it from getting tangled.

    im attempting to do a wig for Natsu from fairy tail, looks like i need to get this "teething" brush of yours. this will be my first time using a wig at a convention.
    any advice you can give for a first-timer? you seem to have a lot of clamp looking things, and hair-tie like objects on the wig while styling. ( i only have cosplayed characters with hats/helmets up to this point. )

    • @LunaLenCosplay
      @LunaLenCosplay  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! The clamp things are are duckbill clips for styling hair and the hair-tie like objects are tiny rubber bands you can find almost anywhere there is women's hair styling stuff haha. The brush I use is called a "teasing brush" so if you plug that into amazon it should pop up for you haha. It's not 100% necessary to use if you have a fine tooth comb already, but it'll make teasing SO much easier and give you lots of volume faster.
      And since this is your first time, I recommend before you cut anything, pre-section out all your spikes as best you can. It's okay to move hairs around after sectioning them while you work, but it's always good to have everything mapped out before hand so you know you're not missing anything.
      Another thing that might help is to tease the entire wig before sectioning things off. Considering how spiky Natsu's hair is, it might help to have a lot of the volume before you section.
      I hope that helps! If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

    Would spray super glue weigh down the spikes? For example I want to make a Vegeta wig but his spikes are rather large and pronounced and I feel if I go through all the regular steps then finish it off with some spray adhesive to really solidify it then it would come apart even if I wanted it to.

    • @LunaLenCosplay
      @LunaLenCosplay  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've personally never used spray super glue on any kind of project, let alone wigs, so I'm not sure exactly how it would react. If you've worked with it before and think it would dry kinda like hairspray, a light coat of it might be okay, but I personally can't recommend it because I've not tried it.
      The only two things I can recommend because they are things I've worked with would be:
      A) The method in this video in theory should hold up to Vegeta level spikes too, you would just need to really really tease and do a few extra coats of hairspray, touching up after every use or
      B) Use foam core inside the spikes to lay the hair on top of as a stronger inner support. You can always coat the piece of foam with a layer of hair and elmer's/tacky glue as a base, and then just hairspray the hairs actually in the wig down on top of it to hide the foam core completely.
      But cosplay is always about experimenting! If you had some test wig fibers you could maybe spray the glue on and see how it reacted, I would for sure do that before spraying your own with it! Best of luck on your Vegeta wig! Sorry I couldn't be more helpful ^^;

    This really made no sense to me as some whoes never styled a wig

    When you style the wig and spray hair spray on it and blow dry it, do you use the hot or cold setting on the blow dryer ? Sorry I’m new and I’m trying to learn before I mess up my first wig

    Does it stay permanently

    • @LunaLenCosplay
      @LunaLenCosplay  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately no since none of the supplies are a permanent adhesive. That being said it should only really have to be touched up slightly as it accumulates wear and tear!

      @@LunaLenCosplay how often would be the touch up I have a short black wig I’m using for an obito cosplay I’m tryna make spiky I would barely use it tho only every once I a while

    • @LunaLenCosplay
      @LunaLenCosplay  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yokandatguy8351 then you hopefully shouldn't have to really touch it up at all once it's styled as long as it's stored on a wig head. If you store it in a bag to save space you may need to touch it up slightly before wear again

    this is super helpful!! can i use any hairspray, or does it have be got2b?

    • @LunaLenCosplay
      @LunaLenCosplay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some hairsprays have oil in them, and because its not real hair, your wig can't absorb the oils so it just sits on top of fibers. The two hairsprays that are the most popular for wigs would be got2b and Aqua net, as those don't have those pesky oils. That being said, I'm sure there are other hairsprays that would work just as well! I've just personally never worked with them so I can't tell you for sure haha
