I love the point you made about how Hermione isn't used to being around magic, so it took Ron, the only member of the Trio to make her remember she's a witch. That same idea is reinforced when neither Harry or Hermione have ever heard of the term 'Mudblood', yet Ron is so angry, he goes to curse Malfoy, when RON is the one explaining the term, I don't feel sympathy for Hermione, I'm angry right alongside Ron.
Thanks, yeah I really appreciated this in the book. Ron is the trio's link to the magical world, there are so many instances of him explaining things to the other two which wizards would otherwise consider obvious. In that same scene you mentioned, for some reason Hermione is upset and crying about it in the movie.
I mean it makes sense that she knows its an insult, tone of voice reveals plenty, but like are we supposed to believe she read a book on a history of wizarding slurs?
@shadowmaster1313 It's been a while since I read the books, but I think that's what happened, that Harry and Hermione knew it was an insult, because of how everyone reacted to Draco saying it, and Ron had to explain it, and then the movie made it so Harry knew it was an insult and then Hermione explained it.
What I love about Hermione's flaws is that they're a coherent extension of her strengths. When your entire identity revolves around being smart and good at understanding everything, the compulsive need to be right, to be correct will often trump emotional awareness. When she tries to debunk Trelawney's predictions, she becomes very tone deaf and dismissive of Lavender's feelings, because she feels threatened by her potentially being wrong. The whole ordeal with SPEW is also interesting as it shows how much Hermione views herself as an objective arbiter of morality, without understanding that reality and practical matters are at odds with her opinion (regardless of whether they're correct). She believes she's right in forcing this unto others because she considers that she's entitled to spreading "the right view". As she's used to be right (or at least believe to be so), she can't understand that she might be doing something wrong. She's dismissive of Luna's beliefs because she's extremely Cartesian. She is extraordinarily good at academics because she _understands_ the books and the logic, but anything that goes beyond the known is too foreign and too irregular for her to process and accept. It's not simply that she's flawed; it's that her flaws are a logical extension of her character as a whole.
Really great insights! I think you said it better than me, I completely agree. I think this is JKR's real strength as a writer and why her characters are so appealing and memorable. They feel very real and human.
This was really nice. I'd honestly be interested in even more videos like this. Like, you touched on Harry and Ron in this video, but I feel like you could go into much more detail with them. Sirius and Lupin could probably make for good videos, too. There's definitely still a good number of potential discussions.
Thanks! Hm maybe I'll do a few more in the future then, but I'll probably at least take a break and do some other kinds of videos first. That's not to say I won't do more general ones on Harry Potter or JKR though.
YES I agree with you on the Gringotts/dragon scene in the books vs movies. Not only is Harry far more impulsive and thinks better under pressure, him CHOOSING TO RIDE A DRAGON to get out of the dangerous situation is the most Harry thing ever! He LOVES flying! It was the first thing that came easy to him in the first book, it was obviously the talent he utilized in book 4, and he even prefers it to Apparating. Meanwhile, Hermione is INCREDIBLY uncomfortable with flying (in book 3 when they're flying Buckbeak, can't really play Quidditch in book 6 when at the Burrow, flies with someone else for protection in "the 7 potters" in book 7) and would avoid it whenever possible. And so for her to have this idea in the movie is 1) frustrating because why take the glory from Harry when she's already had so many moments of strength, and 2) completely out of character.
You said it perfectly! I'm ashamed to admit I forgot how much Harry loves flying when I was writing this script and I focused on his risk taking and impulsiveness. But you're absolutely right - it's another defining trait of his and it makes no sense for Hermione to take that moment.
I really enjoyed Hermione’s development under pressure, as the books progress she does learn to think on her feet, like when they are captured by snatchers in Hallows, because as you said, at the start she completely looses her head in a crisis, this development feel natural and a bit jarring without it. I’ve also loved her personal balance of flaws and strengths, as an example all through their school years being quite abrasive and sharp and so rule orientated that she’s still picking on 1st years that are annoying her as a prefect, despite this she is still the most emotionally intelligent of the 3; think of all the times she explains what’s probably happening in interpersonal dynamics that harry and Ron are utterly clueless over, this shows her as having significant blindspots like we all do. You appreciate her growth and it feels organic, she’s still the same person but refined which is generally speaking what you’d hope for in someone going from child to adulthood. Sad to see you finishing Potter but I’m sure I’ll enjoy whatever you come up with next 😁
Yeah 100%, one of the joys of reading a series is to go on that journey with the characters, and see how they change and evolve. Love your point about that mirroring real life as well, as you move from a child figuring things out to, hopefully, a mature adult with the "rough edges" smoothed out. I do love Harry Potter, but yeah I think there's not too much left to say on specific character comparisons, plus I'm a little burnt out on them. But I might still do more general topics on the series or JKR.
I love Emma Watson and she did a really good job at playing Hermione Granger. But i hated the fact that Steve Kloves gave some of Ron's best lines & moments to Hermione in the films, making Ron look like an idiot and Hermione a perfect goddess, which kinda misses the point of her character. I'm not perfect by any means, but we can relate to Hermione in the books. Also, Hermione x Harry is one of the worst non-canon ships I've seen since this pairing is a constant reminder of how the screenwriters butchered Ron and Ginny's character in the movies. Even Harry said to Ron that he loves Hermione like a sister, which shows their platonic bond in the series.
Yeah, I don't have anything against Emma Watson in particular but Steve Kloves really just took it upon himself to virtually rewrite the core characters for his own vision of the series. I really hate Harry and Hermione being paired together. In the books Ron and Hermione actually really fit together in my opinion, you can see how they come together, and it's done over the course of the series. In the movie I feel like Kloves wanted Hermione to be with Harry, and resented Ron for taking her. Ron got one the worst adaptations in fiction going from the books to the movies.
@@MediaRetrospective-sb2pt strictly in the movie adaptation, Harry is the ridiculously handsome choosen hero, Hermione is the most beautiful well-rounded female worthy of being the hero's partner. Ron and Ginny are just... too average compared to them. So audience naturally expect Harry and Hermione end up together (not reading the book). In the book though, Hermione is not famous for her beauty while Ginny is. She is like a normal best friend gal, Ginny is just wife material, but the film changed that completely.
Movie Hermione is way tooooooo OVERRATED 🤷 ! Sorry but No sorry ... They basically took all traits of Ron , Ginny and also Harry, gave them to Hermione making her look like Mary Sue 😑 . Whole point of trio was balancing eachother in books ... Movies is just Hermione>>>>> . I loved her in books ... But Movie Hermione is meh 😕 !
Yeah it's such a shame, the relationship of the trio in the books is so good and they completely destroyed it in the movies. The director clearly hates Ron as well lol.
The only thing the films did better with Hermione was having her punch Draco in Prisoner of Azkaban instead of slapping him like in the book (also, yes I always laugh at her hitting Harry with a newspaper). That’s it. Don’t get me wrong, I will always enjoy Emma Watson’s portrayal on its own (it’s not her fault she was handed a butchered story, I’ve seen her other films and she’s a good actress to me), but sadly Hermione is and will always be 100 times better in the book. The most important aspect of her that is left out to me is that she’s imperfect. She knows her subjects and what she can read up on and is able to apply what she learned along with it, but it’s Ron who knows the Wizarding world the way the other two of the trio do not. This problem in the films is also what drags Ron down, as he is written to seem incompentent, which he is not, his skill in chess shows he actually isn’t dumb. Don’t even get me started on how the films ruined her relationship with Ron and tried pressing the “Harmonie” ship, which is ludicrous when anyone who read the books KNEW Harry had no interest in Hermione. Not to mention this “ship” ruined Ginny and Harry’s relationship by having it seemingly come out of nowhere. Basically, film Hermione is a fun character on her own, but she is NOT the character I loved from the books. That one (along with Harry) was relatable to me. I share similarities with Harry’s backstory and Hermione’s personality, as both are defined in the books. Sadly, much of it was lost in the films. And yes, I WILL watch/listen to a 1 hour video on how badly the films butchered Ron.
Haha I did enjoy that scene. Malfoy feels a lot more pathetic in the movies. I think you hit the nail on the head with your other points. I really have to say again how much I hate the Harry/Hermione ship and how much I agree with you. Ginny also had an awful showing in the movies, even ignoring how they messed with her growing relationship with Harry. Haha, I may end up doing the Ron video then when I decide to revisit Harry Potter. It'll probably feel cathartic.
