    Fantastic Video....I run Double Gun Kennels in Clarksville, TN, I breed German Shorthairs and train for upland and some waterfowl. I've been looking at building my own kennel much like yours. Just retired from the Army after 28 years and while in the Army with Special Operations Command, one of my jobs was to supervise the contractors who build the kennels for the K9 bite dogs and bomb sniffing dogs we use. The trough system with 3-1 fall, your suspended housing to keep anything off the floor, concrete flooring with a camber....all designs being used by special operations command. Just want to commend you on a well built kennel and superb video. Thanks for posting it.

    Nice place. I would suggest you consider adding a floor squeegee, as that was what we used in the kennels in the Military to ensure the floors dried more quickly and the dos did not developed any sores due to the constant wetness.
    Happy hunting.

    • @shadezeverim3654

      If you add poly to the floors it's easier too

      Thanks for the comment. During summer months, I use floor fans to dry floors and for the dogs' comfort. The only occasion that my kennel floors remain damp is when our humidity is high due to passing rainy weather. Even upon these occasions, concrete floors dry quickly so dampness is not a problem in my kennel setup.

    Really good video. I don't see why anyone would give it a thumbs down. This is exactly how I had planned to build a kennel with the trough for waste water but I like that he piped it away. I also hadn't planned for a closed in building. I was just thinking about small shed for food, but that would be great for treating or medicating or washing and grooming dogs or for puppies for sale. You can buy used restaurant stainless sinks and prep tables fairly cheap. I also like the elevated barrels. The polished concrete floors are a must as well.

    One of the smartest kennels i have seen. Everything is made out of steel and concrete. Perfect. Great for cleaning, also great for not tapping mold. Meaning. I have seen, some kennels made out of steel, wood and concrete. But the wood will trap moisture, and other chemicals over time, which can be harmful and toxic. Another thing i noticed, fans. Perfect. Ventilation is necessary. A brilliant thing i also noticed is the plastic dog houses and the concrete gutter. This i a very good kennel. I seen many. And this in my opinion, how they should be made, not only for the dogs. But also for great ventilation for those who may be working in one. Remember dogs urine and leave waste, also dog food, accidentally falls on the floor. Some people use cleaning products. But sometimes cleaning products and dog waste can get trapped into wood, and cause others problems. To humans. This kennel is top notch. To me the perfect kennel...very good video..

    Great job. Its obvious the dogs are happy and well cared for. Some good ideas that are useful as I build my new dog pen in a few days time. I just build a kennel facility n installs pretty much all the guy talked abt except for self waterers. Looking into it rt now. Good piping is a must cz if it breaks there will be a mass leak $$. I coated the concrete inside the building n it's important to cover the walls as dogs can chew electrical thru drywal. I have Porcelan (not ceramic!) tile going 4 ft high around the building. I have welded kennels, 2 panels between each with 1-2" gap in case I need to slide a fight guard in between. Important to include the top of the kennels. I used panels but other kennels u can use wiremash, hog fencing, or Chainlink. I painted my Chainlink black to match the rest. Fans is a must. Dog runs are 8ft high with barb wire on top, some dog runs are covered. Coyotes can climb. There is a snake fence going around my fencing 4ft high that's burried. I have solar lighting in dig runs, but have electrical back up lights. Most important u need heating n cooling system. If I were u I wd get roll-up doors to enclose building during cold weather. U can bye cheap used. My building is fully included n insulated. But Must have heating for winter. Dogs r freezing in open building and even if enclosed.

    • @FreedomRyder
      @FreedomRyder 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for typos. One last thing. Dogs can dig n get out under the fencing. Cheaper option is to set fence in 16x16 concrete blocks or burry ur fence n lay concrete over it. May sure to have 9 gauge Chainlink cz if they tear it will be hard to replace burried fencing. If ur going to house bully breeds extra material for safety n precautions required.

    I admire your care for your dogs. I would think of using security cameras to monitor your dogs behavior. I would try putting two to a kennel maybe even part time, to reduce anxiety. I would try anti-fatigue mats (harbor freight) for half of each kennel. It may interfere with your wash down process, but I had to mention it. I stumbled on your sight in search "building a dog sanctuary", ie. the ideal environment for dogs. If you ever stop using hunting dogs, I hope you become an a dog professional on the side when your not teaching. Thanks also for the video.

    I need a set up just like this. Perfect size. We are raising Labs and it is time get get out of the 10 x 10's on dirt. What size are your kennels? 5x10? How much of your 60' is enclosed. I do need some whelping room. Looks like 12-15'.

    • @NREmsstate
      @NREmsstate  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roof is over all the kennel for rain protection, but my shop portion is about a quarter of the entire slab size. This latter shop dimension can be to your personal preference. A whelping room in shop would be useful. I don't have this, but would be a nice attribute if you plan on having litters.

    The comments on here are ridicules, it's pretty obvious to me most these people on here live in the city and have no clue about life outside of the city. This guy did an amazing job and his dogs are his life. He spent a-lot of money to house those dogs, most people just have a typical dog kennel for outside dogs with no shade, no roof and no way to easily 100% clean out their kennel. These dogs will live a very happy life. I would maybe change the setup in 2 ways and he could easily do it, he spends a little too much time having to bend over to install the hose to the spicket every day. I'd add an over head hose that is always connected but yet off the ground similar to a typical car wash with a hose that can easily be moved about the area using an pivot arm. The 2nd thing i'd add is mister system along the roof line for hot days.

    Sir you have a good working plan. Besides the dog food brand... but I know what it takes to feed dogs especially when you have well over 10+. But the only idea I don't like is tossing the poop into the woods. That will attract fleas and flies etc. closes to your yard. I will just get a 35 gallon bucket and add a large construction bag in it with a lid, and dispose of it with the garbage every week or so.

    • @stellarlunar87

    How to you control disease that are passed through waste like hookworm and roundworm? And keep the mice out of your supply kennel? I ask because I'm looking to build an animal shelter and your design looks great, but the disease issue would definitely be a problem for me.

    • @NREmsstate
      @NREmsstate  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      none ya The dogs are all on a monthly preventative to keep them healthy. The waste is washed out daily, so it doesn't build up. Rodents are an issue. Dr. Jones has several kill traps for the mice. Don't leave your food exposed, put it in sealed containers.

    Thank u for the response - but What do you mean by ‘not in the snow’? It looks like an area that has tall trees, true? ...an area that sees 30 degree weather. He says ‘winter’. ...important to have electric for lighting. Never mentions heat(?)

    • @mekon1971
      @mekon1971 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remember, working dogs are bred to be outdoors and have good temperature tolerances. In the summer it looks like he uses evaporative cooling from washing down the concrete, ceiling fans to circulate air, hard roof to protect from direct sun and radiant heat. Based on his accent and surroundings I figure he's in the south. For heat in the winter he probably puts blankets in the dog houses. They are raised off the ground, so that takes away from some of the thermal loss from sleeping on the ground, and the metal roof raises the temperature from the sunshine in the kennel area. The concrete will heat up some during the day providing thermal mass heating at night. Some good tree coverage and the leaves provide extra shade in the summer, but the leaves fall in the winter giving more sun access to the metal roof.

    What is the measurement used for each kennel?

    • @ewinter9021
      @ewinter9021 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not certain of his measurements. But you should take a measurement of the area you plan to use and divide them up evenly. And then consider if you want a walk way between kennels with a separate gate to make sure they don't get loose if they get out the first gate (like seen in the video).
      So I would imagine a good 5-6ft height with a width of your choice(depends on your space really) but a good 5-10ft width will do great. I would recommend 5ft width and length as the minimum and go up from there for medium sized dogs. So that is like 6H x 5W x 5L will be a pretty good size. Another method you can try is to measure your dog's length and double that for the width / length of the kennel and make the height 5-6ft. That would give you a decent sized box kennel. If you want one more of a rectangle in length then do 6H X 5W X 8L.
      Hope that helps. If its confusing let me know ;)

    • @NREmsstate
      @NREmsstate  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just high enough to allow you to wash out under barrel and your dog can still easily jump into barrel. Barrels are not wired to fence - only hung with poly-wrapped cables from top bar on the fence panel. Barrels remain in place hanging in this fashion.

      Each of my individual kennel spaces is 5"X10" which is plenty adequate. Sizes larger or somewhat smaller work as well. I think the key is to get your animal out of his or her kennel daily to allow them time to bathroom and blow off steam, plus for training and interaction with the dog. My dogs like their kennels and enjoy laying on the concrete floor that are cooler in summer months. Getting the dogs out of their kennels often is enjoyable for them and freely go back into their pens when time to put them back in kennels.

    • @NREmsstate
      @NREmsstate  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Still clean daily in the winter. Snow is rare in Mississippi. We really only get a good snow that sticks every few years. It gets cold occasionally, but with the hay in the barrels, they make it fine. There is a shut off at the kennel for the few days it gets below freezing so that the lines don't freeze.

      I feed primarily ProPlan - Purina that has 30% protein and 20% fat content. To give them extra treat on occasion I mix wet canned food with ProPlan which the dogs enjoy this mixture of foods after field outings or in summer to stimulate their appetites.

      Each dog has name-plated collar for identification and clipping lead, plus a Seresto collar for fleas and ticks prevention. Only time I would add a 3rd collar would be a Garmin collar for tracking the dog while working in the field. Thanks for viewing and your interest.

    He left the gate to the open central hall open while he was loading a dog in the truck. This defeats the purpose of the central hall. Ever try to catch a dog that has a week recall?? Nice kennel otherwise.

    • @NREmsstate

      Richart Outdoor Adventures There isn't a sealer on it. You can definitely put a sealer on to protect from stains, but this kennel is washed out daily so staining hasn't been a big issue.

    Dogs naturally pee and poop away from their bed and so I overlapped my 15' long kennel over 3' of dg/gravel where in fact the dog does use as toilet...well mostly I mean he does miss a little now and then....the dg and pea gravel does not get muddy and is easily replaced and rinsed out ...the rest of the kennel is on concrete and under an aluminum roof ....of course my dog's also don't live in the kennel ...it is just part time stays if we leave for a while....not gonna leave em in the house or have a dog door in the house other critters would access my home by...so the kennel was our solution

    • @dougiequick1

      BTW my understanding is that a fan will only cool a dog if the dog is wet.....then they work great .....but a dry dog? it is just wind, dog's don't sweat save their paws and nose....well I mean IF the structure was collecting heat then a fan would help

    • @NREmsstate
      @NREmsstate  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      During summer particularly it is hot and humid in Mississippi. My dogs enjoy the fans. I added large floor fans that blow across all the kennel. Dogs enjoy this air movement, regardless if they are wet or dry. When kennel floor is wet after cleanings, the fans dry the floor which I prefer. My Pointers when it's very hot, like laying on wet concrete floor. Pointers are short haired so dampness doesn't bother their coat. Bottom line - my gun dogs love fans blowing when it is hot. Thanks for your comment.
