I was a student of Joe's. I also did some drum exhibitions with Joe, Ed Shauhnessy and Louie Bellson. I do not know John Riley, but I respect him so much--just from this video alone. He is gracious to the gentleman, and John is not showing off, but really breaking it down and educating here. I am a drumming instructor, and I applaud John. Bravo, John. Superb job.

Excellent explanation John! I explain it the same way in my lessons ! I learned it from Joe and Dom. Both excellent! Freestrokes in the fullstroke position. I also add the fullstroke position B (also known a fullstroke exercise) in my lessons!! Awesome!
8:23, John uses most of the terms that were taught to him by Joe as they relate to this series of strokes, and were taught to me and every other student of Joe's: FULL, down, tap, up, and yes, there is the half stroke as well, though not mentioned in this clip. If standard terminology matters (and I still don't think it does), then let's call it what Joe and John called it: a FULL STROKE.
Actually I disagree that it does not matter what it is called. It does. It would be like saying your name does not matter. It is important that we standardize terminology. He is teaching the Freestroke in the Fullstroke position, because there is also a halfstroke and lowstroke position as well. It is important to keep the terminology separate or else it causes confusion. The "Freestroke" was originally developed by Billy Gladstone, and yes I also studied with Joe, Jim Chapin and Dom Famularo.

This is like he is making stuff up as he talks with the stuttering.Riley being a pro drummer would be more prepared for the event.
