It will be not, cause as good as UBW is, it still misses those descriptions of magic, abilites, weapons, rules and inner monologues.
I can understand that sounds pedantic as fuck, but in my mind the best thing about fsn is deepness of it. Some story twists are good, yes, but full understanding of what is happening makes it so much better.
Also, foreshadowing done so much better. Almost everybody who saw first Shirou vs Kuzuki fight immediatly made an assumption on one of the main twists of the route. But if you were reading Fate first, then you would see Shirou doing something similar but not giving away anything, so in UBW instead of assuming *spoiler* you start think why Shiro started admiring and copying another character.
I would not recommend people to watch fate zero first because this is a sequel that assumes you already know whats gonna happen in fate stay night and it will spoil all 3 routes of fate stay night and their individual adaptations
How to REALLY watch the Fate series.
Pick your story and whenever you don't understand something just simply say "Its Fate, don't question it".
Seriously at this point the series is a "Choose your own adventure" story in a series where every installment is canon it don't matter where you start.

I'd recommend watching Fate/Stay Night first, then Fate Zero, then Fate Unlimited Blade Works, then Heaven's Feel when it comes out. That order maximizes the emotional impact of certain events as well as the "journey of realization" value. Also, visual quality will increase as you progress through the episodes, and the story will have a better ending... mostly. Which brings me to my question: does Hollow Ataraxia only make sense if it follows Fate/Stay Night, or can it follow Unlimited Blade Works and/or Heaven's Feel and still make sense?

But where did you find that part? I downloaded the LN and it only covered the summoning and foreshadowed a bit. They never fought.
They fought, I think they got interrupted by Rider. translation's covered volume 3 where it's revealed that the Gil-kun are in the "fake" servants team which acted as a catalyst for the true grail war to occur and the summoning of another 6-7 "true" servants. Gil and "True Archer" also fought in volume 3.

Start like this, 1. Play the visual novel orrrr watch the Fate/Zero anime. 2. Watch the Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade works anime. Alternatively you can watch the unlimited blade works anime first and then Fate/zero, either way you do it is fine.
The key things to note is the names Fate, Unlimited Blade works, and Heaven's Feel, all three of these routes are part of Fate/Stay Night as a whole, and its best to think of them as 3 different campaigns in the SAME video game. Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero are considered the "main" series. Everything else that isnt Fate/Stay Night or Fate/Zero is a spin off and its own thing. Like it said in the video enjoy all those however the hell you want.
Avoid the older animes and movie because they were done poorly. Pretend the only thing thats exists in anime form is Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night:Unlimited Blade Works. That said, the Fate/Stay Night visual novel is heavily recommended as the starting point of the Fate series, but if your not into that sorta thing then dont worry about it. As long as you follow the 2 steps in the beginning of my comment, your good to go and wont feel like you dont know what the hell is going on in the series.

This is the order I watched it, and I quite enjoyed it that way.

Arctic Champion I watched Zero -> Unlimited Blade Works, then played the visual novel, got really hyped about the franchise and read all the other stuff and played the games.
Arctic Champion i watched almost the same minus the ubw movie and enjoyed the hell out of it. Then i went back to the visual novel and was amazed by how good it was.

Shout out on one mistake: Fate prototype is not the reimagining of the fate stay night vn. It IS the initial version of fate (hence the title Prototype). Basically it was supposed to be an otome game but after they went through the development process, at the time it did not feel quite as grounded with it being an otome game and so they did a switcheroo on the genders and positions of the main cast. the concept began based on nasu's unpublished novel (written in high school I think). I only got this info from echoes of other sources in chats in case anyone's wondering.

Fate Prototype also got a full fledged Light Novel prequel story called Fate Prototype Fragments of Blue and Silver which tells the story of the Holy Grail War before Fate Prototype. It has a completely original cast of Servants and is the sort of "Fate Zero" of Prototype.
I find Prototype Fragments to be super underrated and I like it a lot specially due to the Servants there.
Alright so some slight new additions to the roster, Wavers anime is a spinoff which is something that should be watched i guess after you've seen Fate/Zero,
FGO is getting some new anime which is designed more for people who actually play the game since they are skipping chapters 2-5. Fate/Grand Order: Zettai Majuu Sensen Babylonia
adapts the 7th chapter in FGO while Fate/Grand Order: Shinsei Entaku Ryouiki Camelot adapts the 6th Chapter. so unless you actually played the game and went through the other unadapted chapters, you'll be a pretty lost as to whats happened so far.

I thought the 2006 adaptation was pretty good, even though it does have a few big problems. Fate/Zero is a pretty great place to start. If people are planning to watch all the Fate stuff, then I would recommend starting with the 2006 adaptation.

The Fate route isnt well adapted, the 2006 anime its a mix of all the routes and ends with Fate ending.

Jesus... this is really controversial. I MYSELF watched Zero first , got bored to death and hated it. A year later I watched UBW and it was a MUCH better introduction to the Holy Grail War, and then I rewatched Zero and appreciated it way more. But well to each their own.

I think fate/prototype is the first draft made in college that kinoko nasu made in college that became the core of fate series.After type moon change from dojin soft company to commercial, Nasu and takeuchi decided to turn the fate draft to became their first project to visual novel. nasu was worried that because the story might not work as bishojo game because the main character is a girl.Takeuchi then remade the protagonist to man that will be shiro.

Been trying to explain that Saber Extra aka Nero Claudius is not the same character as the Saber aka Artoria Pendragon from Fate/Stay Night and Zero for years and people still mix them up despite its easy to tell them apart once you look closer

How long does it take for the fate route to get interesting? I love fate/zero, but I've been trying to get into the VN for about a year or more now. It is just too slow, and nothing really interesting is happening. At this point it feels more like a school anime than an actual war anime.
One of the things I loved about F/Z was the adult cast and characters, so we got a different setting than your average school setting. I have been dying to rewatch F/Z, but I really want to know more about everything. At this point I might have to just force myself through the VN, which is going to be pretty hard.

well the fate route is like... maybe 20 hours? it gets interesting since the 7-8 mark, maybe. Fate is the least "physical" route, in the sense that the fights are showcased less than the feud between sabers´ and shiro´s ideals (he sees her as a girl that needs protection while she sees herself as a knight protecting a sub-par magician). as for the seriousness of Zero, you only get that on the last part of UBW and on heaven´s feel. Fate is way more "childish" in hindsight

I think people make a bigger deal of the time it takes than it actually is. Let's be real, people wasted as much if not more time watching a long anime series, playing a series of videogames or watching streams.
It isn't that people don't have the time to sink into it as much as they are just plain lazy and sometimes dismissive of VNs as a medium.
Also I think people really blow out of proportion how long it is. It is long, but people keep saying it is this almost endless behemot that you will have to sink your whole life into to conquer. How it has a million lines of text, and you have to beat it 3 timers, and other things that sound impressive when you say it but actually apply to a lot of videogames in general, not even only visual novels.
I think that scares the fuck out of new fans, especially the ones who never read a Visual Novel before.

I've been meaning to get into the Fate franchise for a year now, and dealing with everyday life just seems to eat all my time. Actually, I don't really watch much anime anymore...or tv, or play games. And when I do, it's usually when I'm waiting for laundry to finish or something. Getting old sucks.
I do very much agree that VNs are undervalued, as are interactive fiction (which, if you've never played one, are almost entirely text. - lots of reading and typing). Reading requirements can indeed scare some players off, sadly.

Yeah I bought Fate/extra right after watching the first fate/stay night adaption. I saw Archer in the background and kinda assumed that Arthur had a new dress or something. It wasn't until my second playthrough of the game where I played through with the saber class that I found out it was infact not a reskin. Also I ended up liking her a thousand times more than arthur. Seriously how can I not ( minor spoiler alert) love Nero after hearing she wanted to top Hercules by killing a lion like he did but by wrestling it naked and without a weapon. Personally I haven't found too many sabers I actually like in the series but she certainly wasn't typical so I appreciated the kinda over the top personality.
Start with Fate/Zero first. It's the prequel. It leads into Fate Stay Night, which is the sequel. That way you will understand Kotomine and appreciate Kiritsugu more. You will come to understand why Gilgamesh was so interested in Saber in Fate Stay Night after seeing her in Fate/Zero.
I'm actually a really big fan of the fate series (I need to buy me some of that merch). But here's the order I watched it in if anyone wants a second opinion ^_^

I definitely recommend watching UBW before Fate/Zero, and only watching the OVA recap if you like Saber as a character (but watching it after UBW). I definitely suggest watching Fate/Zero LAST. Because it's the best mainstream Fate series, you definitely want to save the best for last.
I then went on to read Fate/Apocrypha (it's my favourite adaption to date). And afterwards both watching and playing Fate/Grand Order.
Still need to watch Prisma Illya, and can't wait for the anime adaption of Apocrypha, along with Extra, and Heaven's Feel, and I think there was a Prisma Illya movie too? And one more series o-o
(Edit: oh yeah shit the other series is more Grand Order o-o) it's a slightly more light hearted take on the Fate series so it's actually quite refreshing before jumping into Heaven's Feel.
I don't see myself worthy of being a Fate/ fan completely until I've read the visual novel but. I dunno if I intend to, too much fan service for my liking.
And plus my favourite character is Saber Lily even though we never see her in anything (except the Saber Wars event which I never got to play ;-;). I really like the idea of a younger Princess of Knights. ^_^
I don't get why the Fate/stay night anime gets that bad a rep. It's well worth watching, you just have to keep in mind it's been produced 10 years ago.
Personally, I'd recommend Fate/staynight -> Fate/unlimited blade works -> Fate/heaven's feel -> Fate/Zero -> everything else.
And if you're going to play the VN, I recommend playing it before watching the anime.
Why Fate/Zero to UBW? A pretty big deal of UBW is what happened at the end of Fate/Zero and I feel it takes away from the story telling. Coming from an anime only person tho

I've finished fate/stay night (took almost the whole month) and I've just started watching fate/zero.
sadly i didnt know jack and i started with UBW nothing made sense to me till i saw the prequel that i didnt know existed and thats how i got into the whole thing, wanted to try the pc novels but they are just not for me lol nice info im just waiting on heavens feel at the moment and waiting on more FGO

Nice video overall. I've go one gripe though, the watch order HF -> FZ -> UBW.
The FSN routes rely (to an extent) on the knowledge of the previous routes. It's not necessarily crucial knowledge, but it's there. If you're already determined to wait until the HF movies release then there's no reason to compromise and the best order would be UBW -> HF -> FZ
On the topic of FZ, I don't know how much it spoils from FSN since I haven't watched it yet. However, almost everything in FSN revolves, in one way or another, around uncovering the details of the 4th Holy Grail War and its influence on the current events. So my bet would be it spoils a whole lot of stuff. Hence why people recommend watching FSN adaptations first before watching FZ, despite it being a prequel. But regardless of what you do, one is going to inevitably spoil some of the other so it's up to you.
Also, the 2006 adaptation of Fate is not THAT bad. It's definitely not breathtaking, but it's not the worst thing since holocaust either. If you want to start at the beginning, feel free to watch it first. The main issue is that they tried to combine the other two routes with it so there's a few scenes from UBW and one made-up scene related to HF.
Ros Lin I agree with you. The 2006 version was not that bad, I actually enjoyed it myself. To be fair though, from a person who has read the visual novel and currently released anime, the only way I could recommend watching the series without spooling anything about the next one is as follows: Stay Night< Unlimited Blade Works, Heavens Feel (when it comes out) and then Fate Zero last. Other wise Fate Zero spoils key points from both Stay Night and Heavens Feel.
To be completely honest the 2006 adaptation does spoil some minor information for both UBW and HF (for HF maybe not entirely minor, but not crucial either).
And I think most people recommend skipping it especially for those not familiar with the VNs. Since it's kinda bland it might turn some people off before they even get to the good parts (Ufotable's production).
But that order (FSN > UBW > HF > FZ) is what I usually recommend to people too, so yeah. Reading the VN first is still the best option, don't have to care what you watch when after that. :D
Ok, so I looked at a few sites which recommended FZ > UBW, as well as some that recommended FSN(2006) first before the others in that order to get some context, and help explain the Grail Wars before the exposition-heavy start of FZ. I started with FSN(2006), and have now been watching FZ. I've just recently finished FZ season 1 and haven't started season 2 yet. Is it too late to stop myself for HF spoilers? Should I just jump into the VN, and watch the rest of FZ after?
That's a good question which I can't answer 100% since I haven't watched FZ myself yet. I only watched the very first episode so all I can tell for sure is that there are some HF spoilers for Sakura and the three families (Matou, Tohsaka and Einzbern) in that one already.
I'd imagine most spoilers happen near the end of the war when the grail appears, but no promises.
If you really want to read the VN then you should go for it, finish FZ after that. You'll see for yourself what plot points still surprise you while reading.
EDIT:
If you want to save the most time, watch the Deen FSN, ufotable UBW and read only HF.
If you want to have a better experience but still save some time, read Fate, watch ufotable UBW and then read HF.

So, I'm curious to know, will I have a more interesting/satisfying experience with Fate/Grand Order if I've watched both Zero and UBW before I start playing it? With the NA release incoming shortly and the gameplay looking -really- appealing, I've thought about finally taking the dive into the series (I've been putting it off) so I was wondering if anyone had -any- statements to make about the potential pros/cons of tackling FateGO blind versus not-blind.
+Bird Gang well i mean if you're going to play grand order, you might as well watch the zero and ubw lol. Servants from those series do appear in the game. You'll probably get a better experience overall since you would be familiar with a few servants already.
That was the plan, just wondering if there would be any references or plot points or character developments that happen in it that would be more fulfilling by making sure to experience them completely first.
Kinda... like how Automata is that much of a more 'rewarding' experience if you watched/played Replicant.

I've watcb Fate/Grand Order, and I must say.. That spoiled a lot.
The Fate/Extella Game is coming out next week in US and I wanna play it, but should I? Because I have no knowledge regarding the previous ones which is Fate Extra and CCC

There are people working on a translation for CCC... Just pray it doesn't die incomplete.
And yeah, play Extra before Extella just to get a hang of how the Extra universe works.

I haven't played it, so I don't know the details. I know the story is completely different, but I don't know if it goes off the same basic start (being like an alternate route) or if it takes place in another time (or another world) entirely.
But regardless of that, it is a different game with a different story, not just an updated version, despite having the same roster of playable servants from the first game (with the addition of Gilgamesh)

After everything fate is adapted, i want here to be a ufotable adaptation of tsukihime since i heard the original adaptation was complete garbage. But then after that, i want something new. Has nasu even made anything else besides fate, tsukihime, and kara no kyoukai in the nasuversu? I want him to create something new, of course, after we get all these fate adaptations. Also, i want there to be a complete tv series for fate prototype. That ova was not enough
There's Mahou Tsukai no Yoru. One Visual Novel he released some years ago. No adaptation, no translation (there are people working on it but don't hold your breath for it), no nothing. And everyone who has read it says it is awesome.
Mahoyo is stated to have a sequel coming someday but knowing Type-Moon you better don't believe it until it omes out.
Girls' Work was announced a few years ago (more specifically 6 years ago)
Mahou Tsukai No Yoru has been translated up to 7 out of 10 chapters by Mcjon and has been completed by commiesubs but that group never finished coding. Tsukhime has its own spinoffs in Kagetsu Tohya and Melty Blood. Decoration Disorder Disconnection is another novel but it's so obscure that I can't imagine any demand for an anime within the decade.
Isn't revealing Red Saber's identity a spoiler? I think you don't find out her identity until half way past Fate/Extra.

I saw Fate/Zero first. Can I watch Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works as a natural sequel?
I'm not an expert on the fate franchise, but I watched fate zero and unlimited blades work next, and it's fine for me, as in it doesn't spoil anything. I'd suggest watching fate zero before any other anime adaptations as fate zero takes place first, and we really don't know who will win the war without watching fate stay night or ubw. Fyi, fate stay night, ubw and heaven's feel are all different routes in the VN. The first is saber, followed by Rin and Sakura. Hope this helps.

Saber Lily = Younger Version of Saber, pretty much when she was just starting to be king.
Alter = pretty much corrupted version of saber

if the original fate/stay night turns out to be bad enough i dont like it then il skip it and go straight to zero like you said and then watch stay/night and the original blade works movie after everything else but i feel like it will feel wrong just leaving them out completely

Thanks for the TYPE:MOON Fate lists. Snubbing the source material for FSN is fine, because honestly to play through all 3 routes including the bad-ends takes over 50 hours in game time. That doesn't seem like a lot but it for non-VN players it is quite daunting, but far more rewarding. More What if's to explore and more rules are threshed out and don't feel like they are coming out of nowhere.
Fate: Strange Fake or otherwise translated Fake: States Night was an April Fools Prank that actually turned out very decently and has some good Gilgamesh/Enkidu moments. Would not recommend for anyone not already immersed in the Fate Nasuverse.
the VN took me 145 hours to 100%. not counting the time it took to find research install and patch.
You are a champ, did you get the patched version as it was coming out from translators/coders several years back? I have no problem locating the fully patched and playable realta nua version right now, and there are redundancies in place to keep it online.
yeah i was following it since they announced a patch. the realta version is still great, but youre missing all the subtle remixes of the original themes throughout the adaptations that add alot of nostalgia.
and HF is blatantly different without the creepy h scenes.
