  • This is a Ignition switch failure at the plug adapter to the main wiring harness. I wanted to show what the failure looked like and a possible fix. I also showing the connector failures at the coils on the Rocket III. Two complete ignition failure points that could happen to anyone with this bike. Also some commentary on mods that the bike had when purchased.

    I know you posted this some time ago,but thank you very much, I've had an issue with my 2009 classic,this identified it,even after taking it to two garages,they just pushed the connections,never changed this unit,I found the issue after watching this,thank you

    I had the same problem on my Rocket 3, but the ignition switch itself was the problem inside where the white wire is soldered to the terminal, it couldn't handle the power that came through it for head lights, so my problem was not at the harness connection as yours was. Anyways the fix for me was to buy an eastern beaver ignition headlight bypass that diverts the power away from the ignition switch, I had to buy a new ignition switch also, as the old one was just not reliable due to white wire coming away. You mention yourself the eastern beaver bypass I noticed. Anyway once I fitted the Beaver bypass it took all the current away from the switch and now I have brighter lights also. If your ignition switch is still taking all the power to work your headlights on your rocket, I assure you it will eventually burn out, even though you are putting in better harness connectors, you will find that your actual ignition will eventually fail you. Thanks for this video.

    Just modify it by changing out the manufacturer's connectors for a heavy-duty type aftermarket oner. On my Kawasaki zl600, I had to replace the manufacturers light duty electronic relay with a heavy-duty car type relay. I had the bike for 16 years and never had a problem after that. Bikes are going to have little problems over time. It's only when you have to make major mechanical repairs that you have problems because of the expense.

    Like your video started having troubles as 2007 classic 17k miles removed cat put slip on Dain pipe and had triumph install fog lamps worked for a whole two minutes traced all back to factory relays and if I jump relay they work so I with you on wiring connection issues , I hoping to figure it out . Also tune ecu I’ve been planing with it as well mine started running lean exhaust glowing red hope I get that figured out as well
    Love the bike super fast tune ecu got my wheel in the air hanso the man R3 owners guri on tune mods

    Good info. Thanks for posting this. BTW, you mentioned that you replaced your valve cover gasket. Did you have to remove the throttle bodies to do that? The reason I ask is I'll be checking the valves on my 2015 R3T in a month or so. The factory service manual says you have to remove the throttle bodies to check the valves but I'm wondering if that's really necessary.
    Sorry to hear of your problems with your Rocket. I hope Triumph sees your video. I haven't had any problems except a bad oil pressure sending unit. Other than that, it's been flawless. I took it on a 6,000 solo trip last summer and it was a dream on the whole trip. I do know that the dual headlights on your model did cause overloads for the lighting and ignition circuit. That's not a problem with the R3T with it's single headlight and I believe some improvements were made recently.
    Thanks again!

      You dont have to remove throttle bodies but you will be removing ducting and braces and the coils to open her up. I could not get the bolt back in that braces the air ducting up from the engine and just left it off.

    Was this bike part of the recall in 2011-12 for installation of the bypass relay etc to try stop the ignition switch failure occurring?

    Have a 2008 Triumph Rocket 3 touring Edition. Pipes have already been changed before I owned it along with ram air added. So the bypass on oxygen sensor for the pipes no longer exists or is bypassed whatever. Just now on my third year of owning and only have put 10,000 miles on it and having the same issue right here one click headlights blink once and does Jack s***. First issue with the bike really no complaints other than this I just bought a battery and now I am checking ignition relay along with the coils wiring. I love this bike and it only has 19,000 miles I bought it with 8,000 miles. Person before it do not know so really can't say what they did to it. I will say having 19,000 miles and already having these kind of electrical issues as pretty sad. My 2009 Fatboy never had a electrical issue and had more miles that I put on it. Two thumbs up to the way it rides. Two dicks down to the way it's wired

    just a quickie how do you adjust the fuel sender?

    • @popageorgio
      @popageorgio  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lifting the tank doesn't take any adjustments at all. you are stretching the line keeping it connected though when accessing the top end.

    • @Pauluk7772
      @Pauluk7772 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean adjustment of sender, my low fuel light goes on within 5 miles of filling to top. I read that you need to have a voltage reading of 2.4volts when empty if not you need to adjust, but I have no idea what you adjust and how.

    • @popageorgio
      @popageorgio  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only removed my sender once and I know it had a big float attached to an arm on it. If you cant adjust that to something that works after rebuilding I would just replace the unit. Its damn expensive so i feel bads for ya.

      All I can say is that I absolutely love my R3T. I've ridden since 1969 with some time in-between without a bike but this bike is a dream. I am aware of the electrical problems on some Rockets because I've seen the threads on the subject that PopaGeorgio mentioned but that has apparently never been a problem with the Touring model. The problem is the heavy amp draw of the headlights that melted the ignition in some cases. The solution involved kits to isolate the headlights or to simply wire them yourself with a relay, if I remember correctly. But the problem may have been fixed with more recent Roadsters. I'm not sure about that. But I'm as happy as a double-dick donkey with my Rocket.
