However, a handful of heavily armed "super carriers" exist, most famously the Gantrithor... The Gantrithor was powerful enough that it single-handedly defeated an entire terran battlecruiser squadron under the command of General Edmund Duke."
Keep in mind that at the beginning of Starcraft, Tassadar and his fleet destroyed the Terran colony of Chau Sara. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's what this video is about. No doubt the Terrans took exception to the Protoss' habit of blowing up their planets...
This time period in PC gaming really saw some amazing RTS games come one after another. StarCraft being the most prominent, with Total Annihilation before it and the lesser know but excellent Dark Reign as well.
@mikepalomino yep pretty much. One of the things in SC that was revolutionary was the units were all totally different and so were the strategies required to play them. TA has hundreds of awesome units, but the two sides are pretty similar and their units mimic each other.
dont diss the intro its the best. when i saw it first time 6 years ago i was WOWed. Especialy the tune at the begining. the intro isnt very graphical but its got something about it that makes you wanna watch it again and play the game. + the terran are desplayed for scumbags they are, not some heroic bullshit like other game

It has an armament that fires a beam similar to battlecruiser's yamato cannon and also a beam that is similar to mothership planetcracker, although much weaker
its hard to belive that the same people who gave us the some what tame family friendly world of warcraft brought us such head exploading (litteraly) blood and guts games like starcraft and diablo.

It's definately some kind of protoss ship. As to why it's not in the game - chalk it up to the artists' creativity. Also it's likely the game was still in the early stages when this cinematic was designed. Plus, there are other instances in the SC cinematics where units and/or vehicles do not conform 100% with those found in the core game. One way of looking at it is thinking of the cinematics as a highly advanced form of concept art.
Starcraft was the high watermark of RTS games for a long time, but Dawn of War, based on the tabletop game which preceded Starcraft, is a better game. Best RTS of 2004. Also, I like Dawn of War's darker approach.
Starcraft was/is heavily based of Warhammer 40k. many a nerd to this day argue which is better. but its important to know Warhammer did in fact start some things 1. Green orks 2.Power armor super soldiers
The only other RTS released around the same time that was also very good was Total Annihilation, predecessor to Supreme Commander. (It came out in 1998) Both Starcraft and Total Annihilation are my favorite RTS games...
actually no, mothership is from starcrat 2, this is a supercarrier wich is a carrier with lots of weapons, the ones used to destroy zerg infestations in planets
At the beginning of Starcraft, the Protoss, with Tassadar's fleet glass the colonies of the terrans because they are already infested by the Zerg swarm (but terran are still unaware of this infestation). And for Protoss doesn't matter if a lot of terrans die in this "purification".

It's probably just a protoss carrier considering how big they are. I don't think that would be a mothership since they only intoduced that ship in SC2...
They fixed that in soulstorm by trying to completely balance 7 completely unblaanced classes. It's horrible in single player, but it did the brain-dead use of Chaos marines online, which was a HUUUGE problem.
wow.. 10 years and we still don't clearly know what the alien ship in the video is.. mothership is a new presumption since starcraft 2 ( I really doubt it is a mothership), protos carrier (with superweapon, or simply something removed from the game) could be.. some other unknown gigantic protos ship? .. meh sure why not.. a while back I kept thinking it's a Xel'Naga ship.. but now I say that's pretty ridiculous.. :-?? .. Oh ok gotchya. Thanks for the info - I got the starcraft 64 version and it doesn't really explain too much about the races, just unit abilities and such. Never bothered to look up any research on SC either.

@mikepalomino I totally agree - I liked TA"s technical aspects, huge maps, lots of units, and graphics, but I liked Starcraft's gameplay and storyline more. I think TA would've been much better with a real plot. btw, have you tried TA-Spring?
I think the ship that was showed there may have been a old prototype for a new unit that is going to be in sc2, the mothership. Apparantly, it never made it into sc1.
starship troopers book series had literally just armor that augmented the abilites of the standard soldier. they werent bio engineered at all. if you dont see the resemblance between a marine and an ultramarine or a ravener and a hydralisk then there is nothing left to be said warhammer had a lot inspired from starship troopers in the "kill the bugs" aspect. but after that SC was heavily inspired by warhammer. the fucking devs have made it clear that it was
doesn't mean the powered armor wasnt inspired from warhammer. both lores have their pros and cons, but yes warhammers spacemarines very much inspired the aesthetics of the terran race in starcraft, much like protoss has many Eldar and Tau themes
I saw the love vanish completely with the first 2 expansion packs in WoW. When you've played their games since their start when you were a kid, you notice these kind of things. I am no longer playing Blizzard games. Not out of spite, but out of lack of interest. Paradox (and Bethesda) is my new favourite(s) (and has been quite some years).
Um actually, CyborgCommando1980, the Motherships were made BEFORE the original Starcraft. They used to be the main ships in fleets during the golden age of Protoss expansion. Then after Brood War, they were refitted to hold weapons and warriors. Sorry, but I just had to clear that up. But you have a point where you say these other weapons are shown in cinematics but not in gameplay.

It took me about 10 years to realize this, but i think there's a plothole with the spanish speaking guy. In the backstory, it says that the UPL had wiped out all languages except english about 200 years before this, so yeah.... BTW, anyone know what he's saying?

nah, its the carriers eye. You know the Red eye in front of the carrier. Useless in the game, but it really fires a weapon of sorts.

That Protoss ship might have well have been a mothership and not a Carrier. Carriers don't have any prime weapons like that superlaser.

I hope you realize that Anthology is Starcraft (the original game) + Starcraft: Brood War. I don't think they even sell the games separately anymore.
