  • Hi guys,
    In this video I tackle the very current issue that is 'stock engine power limits'
    I discuss why you need to forge, what causes the engines to fail and I also show you guys how my 300+bhp sounds under full load!

    Great video again Grant, going from strength to strength with every video 👍 must admit I've never understood going for the highest Dyno number, power on/under the curve has always interested me more as it's useable day to day as well as saving/prolonging the engine. Your Abarth is testament to what a good tune and parts that compliment each other can produce in terms of a useable yet fast every day car and long may it continue. Sounds beastly by the way 👌

    • @Gdl1992
      @Gdl1992  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks bud. I feel I have to preach what I practice and vice versa. It boils down to the difference between a powerful car and a fast car... They are not always the same thing. Sounds like you have sussed it!

      @@Gdl1992 Oh absolutely, I mean you've certainly got enough tuning experience having seen the good and unfortunately the bad side of engine tuning! I find myself coming more and more to the conclusion that these videos will be good reference when it comes to tuning my own car once it has arrived. Whilst it's not gonna be an Abarth so parts will be different in my eyes the principle is what matters no matter how different the tuning ends up being. Would very much rather have 300bhp for 5k rpms than have 600bhp for 500rpms that's for sure 👍. Looking forward to the next video already

    This clips is from 2019 and it's now 2024. I'm from Australia where it's brutally hot for most of the year. My 595 is making 300hp and 420nm of torque. It's my daily drive and I drive it mercilessly. I have all the supporting mods, but can not recommend strongly enough the injection of water/meth injection to cool the charge. However, the best friend of any Abarth engine be it 200hp or 300hp plus is a great tuner who understands how these engines work. A poorly skilled tuner will destroy a cars engine an hour after it drives off the dyno.

    Great stuff. I am in the states and I love my car! I have a 500t a.k.a. (abarth engine with sport body) I have a blue spark and the tork motorsports multiair springs. I love it! I want 200bhp. That is what I think is safe. I live in AZ so it gets really hot here. So running high hp would not be ideal. I totally get your point and I am so glad we have someone like you that can tell it straight. We here get the garret turbo stock where I think you guys get the IHI stock. I think I'm around 180-190 hp right now. But I am l planning on getting a front mount and a down pipe and u think that will be all. I will be buying a new car next year. Then this one will be getting a forged engine.

    • @Gdl1992
      @Gdl1992  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks bro. Yea I presume the 500t is multiair engine same. As the US as the t unfortunately isn't sold in the UK. Sounds like the right sort of figures. Allowing a better flow of air in and out of the engine is certainly the way to go. To maximise gains but also to prevent as much drop off as engine gets hotter

    • @nabismith8023
      @nabismith8023 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. ALL 1.4 litre engines in the US are multi air. I also recommend the spring upgrade. Its added a very noticeable gain to mid and top end pull. Hell they're only 90bux! I know for 2019 and up Fiat released a 1.3 multiair II that comes with 170bhp stock. It's for now only available in the 500x. Which is a 4door crossovers type car.

    as always informative and easy to digest...without being impolite what would the cost without the mistakes of chasing power to make a strong forged engine , power circa 250 as you mentioned and advice on the clutch and drive shafts..pleae

    • @Gdl1992
      @Gdl1992  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, thank you.
      At 250 bhp the engine is safe to run unforged. However if you felt you were going to subject it to an acceptional amount of abuse then bring the torque down slightly. A friend of mine has just recently don't the tts260 turbo on his Abarth and made 255 bhp and 260 ft lbs. It drives like a dream and is so linear and very fast without any fuss. It is also super safe on the stock engine.
      Forging an engine properly including labour is going to be around 5k to be honest as there is so many little things that need addressing.
      And on the clutch front for 250 bhp I would highly recommend a cg motorsports dual friction clutch. It's capable of holding the power/torque and a lot more should you want to go a bit crazy. But gives you a fairly good pedal feel and could be used every day. It's not expensive either and can be used with a stock flywheel.

    way late comment here...BUT YOU make a GREAT POINT!!! IF you REALLY want to CRANK IT UP ⬆️ and NOT wreck it...then build it RIGHT. Also...prepping 4 the fire...’sometimes’ you can OVERPOWER a chassis and completely ruin the drive ability of a street car. If every time you punch it the car looses traction or can only be driven on perfect roads in perfect weather...Then what’s the point??? and to be honest...IF you are an outright SPEED FREAK...Then a Turbo ‘Busa is the only fix that’ll scratch that itch...🔥👋👍 (I live in N.Italy 🇮🇹 where 80-90kmh in a 50kmh zone is normal btw AND the mt twisties are fantastic)

    A couple of questions I have is, 1- I thought you could only put 215 bhp on front wheel drive cars? 2 - back in the early days, and I do this with my Integrale, is let engine idle for 2 minutes after a run. This was originally used to preserve the turbo. Would this not help in the long term for “melted pistons”?

  • @Numbah893
    @Numbah893 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If you have the money to build your Abarths 1.4, I would say go for it and do everything right the first time. However I wouldnt even bother trying to reach 300 because the Abarth 500 is a light and small car designed to handle corners, not go in a straight line like an NHRA Top Fuel dragster..

    • @Gdl1992
      @Gdl1992  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be honest. This whole process has showed me what is capable when the correct hardware, installed by a professional meets a good tune. The capability of the engine is amazing unforged. The aren't the best handling cars or the best straight liners. What they are is great all rounders that put a smile on your face and taking it too far makes the car a bit too serious and eats Into that a little. And yes you are right, the Abarth being as light as it is means any power you do put into it gives you an advantage.

    • @Numbah893
      @Numbah893 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Gdl1992Yes these cars do have a good balance between straight line and cornering. If you know how to put everything on and are experienced, I would say go for it. If not then yes having a professional put things on for you is best. Tuning can determine your detonation as well. So you better know someone who knows what they're doing. 300 can be achieved but again.. Will it be safe to run and for how long. Will your tune be on point or will you end up with splitting your block, running into shattered pistons and bent rods. Its why Im only going up to 225 to 250 with my Abarth and sadly we only have the 500 Abarth or 124 Abarth in the USA. Not to mention this is my first 500 Abarth and after test driving one only once, Ive always wanted one to daily and road course

We don’t plan to do internals or continuing modifying it, but we feel great about it. We ran a 13.82 @ 99.66mph back when it was 21psi through the GT1446 and street tires. On Drag Times, we are the quickest and fastest stock turbo Abarth. No forged internals, no slicks. There is a huge room for improvements, but that record is where we leave it. We won’t continue the chase. We would love for someone to try and top our 13.82 @ 99.66. Please check out our run time @: dragtimes.com/Fiat--500-Drag-Racing.html
