- In this tutorial I am tying the Surf Candy style Sandeel fly. This style of fly pattern was originally tied by Bob Popovics and is in his book, Pop Flies.
The Sandeel is a great food source of forage fish for most predatory saltwater fish. The late Summer through early Winter is a great time to utilize this pattern most affectively. While these Sandeels are primarily inshore and up to the beach. I was on a couple trips offshore where there were schools of tuna feasting on this bounty. False Albacore, Striped Bass, and Blue fish are species that really key in on this food source.
Back in the day we tied our Sandeels with 5-minute epoxy and would rotate them until the epoxy set. Most of today's fly tiers use Solarez UV epoxy because the UV light sets the epoxy much faster. We also tied primarily with natural buck tail. While buck tail has great movement and action in the water, Blue fish and Striped Bass chew them up fast. So many fly tiers today have turned to synthetics.
Materials you will need for this pattern...
1. Hook... Gamakatsu SL11-3H Size 2/0 or smaller
2. Thread... UNI-Mono clear, and red thread for the gill collar.
3. Poly Flash Tubing (pearl) or Krystal Flash to cover the hook.
4. 3-D Molded Eyes, Gold or Silver 2.5
5. PolarFlash (Opal Mirage)
6. MFC synthetic mix Scales & Tails (Grizzly Chartreuse) or any other color you want the top of the fly. (Pink, Olive, Blue, & Grey are other good choices)
7. Salt-Water Flashabou or Lateral Scale

Like that think ill try the solerez down for stiffness looking forward to seeing it in water thanks for the heads up.
It's a great versatile fly. You can also wrap led wire around the hook shank under the poly tube if you want to add weight.
Well done. Explained so accurately that even a novice like I am understood. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
