in the top 5 best maybe joint with The Beatles Rubber soul , Sex Pistols never mind the bollocks, the Clash first album, and Beatles Revolver , but Quadrophenia is brilliant , it goes very deep and is a very important album , the tunes are brilliant the lyrics are brilliant , as far as concept albums go , it's the best of all time, it gets in to the soul of the people of the early sixties , that were are around of that time, genius album.I love it and will from time to time play the film and listen to album forever.
The last concept album...? Someone's forgetting about The Wall in 1979 - one of the only concept albums that can rival Quadrophenia in terms of its linear narrative...
But concerning the narrative one can easily realize The Wall being much closer to Tommy than to Quadrophenia. Actually, The Wall may be definitely considered as a "remake" of Tommy.
the 1973 album is a true classic, and I listen to it frequently. The 1979 movie was less impressive, although I would still class it as one of favourite movies in terms of the cinematography, but the soundtrack was disappointing. It would have been much better if the soundtrack were more based around the original 1973 album. I think this would have had far more impact as the 1973 album was pure class. For me the mod culture was all there visually in the movie, and although the 1973 album was more rock based, the music and lyrics carried the emotion of the story so much better. It's a dilemma I guess, and I imagine when the 1973 songs were written, the Who maybe didn't appreciate just how seminal the Quadrophenia story would become when the mod revival emerged a few years later, but they saw an opportunity to make a movie and make some cash, and they mixed the movie up with a few tracks off the 1973 album, and some 60's classics to recreate the mod moment, but unfortunately this diluted the story which is SO well told in the original 1973 album. One day I would love to see a new Quadrophenia movie which uses ALL of the tracks off the original album, and tells the story through the music, as originally intended.
It didn't detract anything for me. Barely noticeable compared to Tommy. Quadrophenia movie is one of my all time favorites. Probably seen it 20 times in the last year lol
I am into The Mod Bands the Yardbirds, Pretty Things, The Creation, The Action, The Who, the kinks, Georgie Fame, Small Faces, The Birds, many more I love too. I am Mod since I was teenager in 80s to right now. I never got Mod Scooters, someday I want to buy. Mod came in Ontario Canada 1979 - 1994. Right now Mod Cultural is very big in Ontario Canada, very big in London, UK, more places in England. I love this Documentary lot, I want to buy someday.
Last BIG concept album was done by Kiss. It was called The Elder and it's now very much loved after it's initial commercial failure. But Quadrophenia is arguably one of the greatest albums ever. I bet Micheal Jackson tapped into Pete's mojo when he did the song Beat It. One gang vs another, timeless in history. But Pete's focus on the subject is amazing.
OH my god kiss I was listening to kiss when I was a child. My brother told me you really want to listen to real rock and roll. He give me Tommy and quadrophenia and who's next albums. Ever since then I don't listen to anything unless it has a real meaning behind it. Like Bruce Springsteen, Bob seger, real rock music. But dude really you are putting kiss in the same breath as the greatest rock band ever THE WHO. Pete Townshend is a musical genius.
it depends what you consider "big" but conceptual albums are several every year, Nick Cave, Ghosteen from 2019 or evenn pop like bts with Map of the Soul: 7 from 2020, kid a by radiohead, even beyonce make conceptual albums...
the Who are a sixties -70s band yeah rock but early was Mod as was the Small Faces - but the main influance was the northern soul - Soul boys are a follow on of Mods from the sixties and 70s not the plastic Mod of the 80s well they still had scooters lol
Fascinating the rock culture with the teddy boys and the mods movements or a hepcat rock persona or state of mind to emote with swagger wearing saville row haberdashery attire. I like Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond than transition over to Richard Elliot and Rick Brain saxophonist and trumpet player. Grew up listening to both swing music and Doo Wop extravaganzas like the Del Vikings and Frankie Lymon and the teenagers. Monty Python catchphrase wink wink nudge nudge Sir Peter Sir Rodger Sir Kenny and bandmates
It’s a US show at a guess which one I ain’t got a clue but the company names below the title might be a clue try googling them see if it gives you anything
Love the Mod scene, but the guy’s doing now. Are retro , surely the mods of the sixties were dressing modern. So they would be wearing the latest materials and designs of now. Not dressing like people from hall a decade ago. This is a great documentary.
'Quadrophenia was the last big concept album. I don't think there's been anything much since then that's had the same impact'. ...umm...THE WALL ANYONE?
Don't think you could ever accuse Eddie Piller of 'jumping along for the ride' From his involvement as a mod at street level, to his publishing and signing of bands to a string of record labels essential to us from the 80s on. Can't wait to read his book when it eventually comes out...this year?
i am so fucked off ,with these people who think they can put mod in a box and stereo type things,,,Mod is a forward moving concept ," the time you've heard about it ,its old hat "
Mod = Immigration, style, music. A disenfranchised black and white working class youth looking for fun, fun fun! All this intellectualising, media and business led claptrap is what kills off every half decent movement right up to this very day.
there's a lot of bollocks talked about mod and modernism , no fucker became a mod when i was growing up because of moderism , smoky jazz and teddy boys , shut up please
Bruce Leslie sorry it's a great work, but it's not , the Who are real and have soul , the Wall is a depressive middle class cry for help , very good , but the Who are genius , Pete is a world ahead of Pink Floyd , with his writing he is bang on as far as reflecting life is concerned and does not go up his own arse.
Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane, were mods. Kenney Jones, Jimmy Winston and latterly, Ian McLagan, weren’t mods, but they adopted the style. The Action, were a mod band.
yes but it would have been a long forgotten small scene without point or focus without the Who , Pete is so bright and well a genius , the only one of that scene .
Quadrophenia is an INCREDIBLE album. My favorite album by The Who and one of my favorite albums of all time. The movie is also great as well.
The best album ever made. Can't really say anymore. There is no need.
alan spencer Revolver.
Yeah great album always sounds fresh 👍👍👍

Love this particular double album 73, sounds adventurous, and a lot more original, still got my vynal double with the book 🎯love❤😘 it still today.
@@johnmscott4556 I have an original 'mint' copy of the first pressing with the 'wallpaper' book ...10 quid Beanos mid 1990's.

Yup started my "MOD" Art portfolio with the 50s , and Italian influence .
Best album ever made.
It's up there
Quadrophenia is ARGUABLY the best album of all time.
There's not a bad track on it
I can see why Kenny Jones later replaced Keith Moon, he apparently was from the same scene as the Who with his original band.
Yeah, Kenney was a good friend of Keith since the early days, and was one of last persons to see him alive the night Keith died.

I love Floyd, but Quadrophenia pisses all over The Wall, couple of decent tracks but mostly meh!
@@zdeneksmrcka5050 I would add Pink Floyd's "Animals" to the list of great concept albums.
This is great journalism!
best movie ever
The album is much better than the film
0:50 it's Top Gears James May ;) - I loved that album when it come out and I love it still. The film was just brilliant as well.
Paolo Hewitt: "It was a very outlandish uniform." 🤣🤣🤣
Love all the who
I know that mods were very big in British style, i was a scooter skinhead from Dublin in 1983 brilliant days man i loved it ❤
BELL BOY!

It came out at the same time as "Dark Side Of The Moon ".
Give or take 2 years!!!

I wouldn’t make a blanket statement like the last concept album. The Wall is an epic concept album.
Two of my favorite albums.
Does anyone know the origin of the pic shown at 5:43?
why

I watched this movie to impress friends, as a teenager.
If the number one album ever was this one, I'd say Ok
The movie featured a young Gordon Sumner (aka "Sting").
That was before he was a wanker
11:35 minutes in, anyone know what tv show footage that is from the kinks doing you really got me

the football casuals of 80/81/82 were, for me, the last Mods in England.
Can’t find part 2 of this?
You could say it described the struggle between people like Austin Powers & people like The Fonz.
U probably cud if u hadn't fukin watched it, an u wer just making it up as u went along, Austin powers!! Says it all
why do i picture you in slippers outside
That's a very very accurate description.
What is the name and artist of the first song that plays?
Greatest season for teens and young people who now have become since ages ago angel's company 😂
I was into all those waves lol x
mods forever
Love Quadrophenia , big part of my youth , but it still annoys me that there are so many flares wearers ! Terrible oversight.
I never knew James May had an older brother!
Why does Alan Clayson spit out every word as if it were a venomous death threat?
'Quadrophenia was the last big concept album. I don't think there's been anything much since then that's had the same impact'.

Hey cannibal, he's right.
You are right. I am a Who fan, but The Wall was commercially a bigger success than Quadrophenia.
"The Wall" - that's exactly what I said.
