  • The world of the Looney Tunes is pretty large, spanning so many years that your grandparents or even great grandparents may have seen when it originally began. Duck Dodgers happens to be the spin-off show continuing a legacy based on a short cartoon film of the same name, Duck Dodgers. Let's take a look into this early 2000's Looney Tunes spin-off featuring Daffy Duck as the title character of Duck Dodgers!

Finally! People are talking about this show. I was marathoning it weeks ago. It was my favorite Looney Tunes series as a kid. Joe Alaskey was the Daffy Duck voice actor I grew up with, and they did a really great job implementing the Looney Tunes flare for a new Millennium. I forgot how short this series actually was, but it got 3 seasons and a theme that absolutely slapped by Tom Jones, who Dodgers also paid tribute to in the show, even dressed like him. The crossovers like Samurai Quack was also awesome. This show went wild in the best possible ways.
Show much to enjoy about Duck Dodgers, one of them being that despite Dodgers being an arrogant, selfish, lazy goofball, he can actually be a pretty competent badass. He is even a master of the nunchaku.

the thing that makes doger miles above other 'dumber character spinoff' is that, while he's in-universe overhyped as a hero, in reality he's just below average, and will still try to rise to occasion when the chips are down, usually failing, but giving an opening for his teammates to save the day

I was a Boomerang kid, more so than any other kids cable channel. Subsequently Duck Dodgers was a huge influence on my childhood and I remember vividly experiencing the third season while it was still airing. It cemented Daffy as my favorite Looney Tunes character for eons (although the Looney Tunes Show usurped that slightly by making me adore Lola), and it inspired my love for animation as an art form and my desire to become a cartoonist as an adult. Ikr? Like, I love how WB was like "hey, you know these 50+year old cartoon characters that are traditionally used in comedic shorts? Let's do something, like, super deep and creative with them. Sci-fi, fantasy, procedural drama, aliens/basketball, DITL, Christmas spinoffs, let's just work with what we have and, well, do it!" Like, the people on the creative team in this era were literal geniuses.
Unfortunately WB is becoming more self-aware and trying too hard to be the "Golden Age". The "Evergreen era" actually tried to be it's own thing while honouring the LT legacy, that's why it worked so well.

Fun fact: Duck Dodgers originally was intended to be a theatrical film from Warner Bros' feature animation division, and was pitched immediately after Iron Giant's production was completed. Spike Brandt & Tony Cervone (supervising directors for the TV show) and frequent Brad Bird collaborator Dean Wellins animated a trailer and showed it to WB. WB nixed the idea because they didn't feel the characters could "carry a feature film on their own". Production artwork and footage from that trailer appear in the opening credits of the TV show.

Oh Duck Dodgers was one of my favorite cartoons growing up! I vividly remember watching episodes on Boomerang almost every morning on the TV in our basement ^^
I always loved the Theme Song and how funky and epic it sounded!

Duck Dodgers! There are 2 very memorable episodes of this series I can never forget - "Of Course You Know This Means War", two parts, where a disgraced Dodgers, a framed Cadet Porky, and a replaced Marvin the Martian move to stop a Martian Plot to invade Earth, and "The Fudd", an off putting episode where characters are inflicted with a virus called The Fudd where they simply give off a creepy laugh - where it culminates to an amazing cameo of Elmer Fudd.
This was a nostalgic throwback. I was a highschooler at this time, watching TV just to shirk off homework, and seeing unique takes of characters from the classic Loony Toons were an amazing sight to see. Thanks for this, man! Looking to more throwbacks!

'Samurai Quack' is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, and I'm 56.
Speaking of which, I watched the original airing of 'Duck Dodgers and the Return of the 24½th Century' in 1980. Regrettably, they've now removed the part where Marvin fires his Earth-destroying missile, only to reassure us that it'll take three days to reach us, giving us plenty of time to prepare.

I think that might have been why I didn’t get to finish this series when it was airing. The time slot seemed to always conflict with something else. But the few episodes I happened to catch, I loved. Honestly, I thought this only had one season! Thanks for reminding me that this exists, I think I’ll binge this this weekend.

I recently discovered Duck Dodgers, unfortunately just missed the demographic to catch it on TV. But this show is amazing! Really captures the edgy 2000's humour of what I call the "Looney Tunes Renaissance". Like, I am just in love with the fact that throughout this era WB was saying "let's just take these comedic cartoon characters we normally do in shorts and do super deep and creative stuff with them!" Like, holy shit.
And the dynamic between these three is killer.

A few weeks away from the Tiny Toons reboot, I think it's amusing that you posted this, Jordan. Because the budget for this went all over the place originally, with it originally being a Dodgers movie, and before that it was gonna be a continuation of Tiny Toons that followed the characters into young adulthood rather than the early high school of the original show.

Some of my favorite Looney Tunes stuff ever. In a way, the series is like very high-quality fanfiction (don't knock fanfiction, for you'd be amazed at some of the stuff written). Even the guest voice actors were great to have on, with my favorite one - which may or may not be a surprise, as I was in high school during this time - being Lewis Black.
A shame we won't get more shows quite like this one, ditto for it being as relatively short-lived as it was, but at least we got a good and good-quality show that still had a decent run. Highly recommend adding it to anyone's and everyone's library.

What I particularly remember about this Duck Dodgers was the game series on the old CN website. They released new levels incrementally, and I was addicted to waiting and playing the latest level upon release. I have no idea if the game was actually good enough that it made that kind of commitment worthwhile lol

Jordan, thank you so much for uploading your awesome retrospectives.
To get a bit personal, in there earlier months of this year, I’d get home from work, smoke a bowl, and enjoy the heck out of each of your new uploads. I’ve recently been placed on probation, and having to suddenly stop smoking after four+ years is hard to get used to. Having ADD, I just can’t vibe or appreciate things like I did with the herb. But your calming voice, bringing me back to the early 2000s is really all I need at the moment to just calm down and be myself. Thanks again. ❤️

Loved this show!! I still quote some of the most hilarious lines such as "if you're ever on stage and don't remember what city you're in, just yell 'Thank You Detroit!' There's a 47% chance you'll be right". Also the entire Ghost in the Machine spoof episode is in my opinion the funniest, with gems like the fortune teller "did one of you have a grandfather?" And "Thumb, thumb, thumb, lens cap, eyeball, thumb...Bananas are loaded with potassium." Now I want to go rewatch it.
