  • Mary Quant, the Miniskirt, and Daisy Doll in Swinging London
The 1960s were a period of great innovation in the United Kingdom, leading the world in product design, notable graphics, and furniture, as well as memorable modes of transport.
Mary Quant was one of the fashion leaders of the time. She transformed the way women dressed, and for doll-collectors everywhere, she gave us the adorable Daisy doll.
Daisy was truly ground-breaking, her fashions were miniaturized versions of Quant’s full-sized outfits. The illustrations that promoted the doll, tied in with the company’s ethos of bright graphic prints, bold lines, and a sophistication that belied an apparent simplicity of execution.
As Quant memorably said, “Fashion is not frivolous!”. She caused a design revolution with her energy, flair, and rebellion. She brought this energy to bear on the clothing and packaging of the Daisy dolls and accessories. Quant changed the high street forever, harnessing mass production techniques and the youthful spirit of the times to create a new look for all of her products.
Mary Quant, a powerful role-model for women, personified the energy and fun of swinging London. She challenged conventions, and popularized the miniskirt, colorful tights, and tailored trousers - igniting a new age of feminism. The miniskirt became a symbol of the era, sparking a new creative scene in London and beyond.
Quant’s tiny boutique grew into a wholesale brand available in department stores across the UK. Her success soon hit America, where her designs were made for chain stores and mail order companies. Inspiring young women to rebel against traditional dress worn by their mothers and grandmothers. Quant became the woman that made fashion less exclusive and more accessible to a new generation.
Ahead of her time in marketing, Quant embodied her own label. Her photogenic style, playful energy, and revolutionary approach made her the ultimate ambassador for the brand. She collaborated with manufacturers, diversifying into underwear, hosiery, and cosmetics, all made to her designs, and packaged with her distinctive daisy logo. She even created the Daisy doll, a British rival to Barbie.

Hi Gabe, Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Agreed! Daisy is fab. I mostly find her outfits on the ebay.co.uk site. But they have become expensive - especially since the V&A exhibition - and then there's the cost of international shipping for anyone outside the UK. Sigh. This is not a cheap hobby!!

      @@BoldDoll Totally agreed!
I usually find mine in local markets and charity shops but its becoming harder and harder to find them... :)
Do you know of any good websites where I can find a database of the produced fashions? I have a few that I'm doubtful if they are Daisy's or just off brand outfits...

Hi Gabe, This site is pretty comprehensive www.jasellesdaisypassion.com/index.html although it hasn't been updated for a while. Hopefully you can find the ones you are doubtful of here.

Thanks Vanessa! Daisy still has appeal even after all these years - she has something of anime about her for modern collectors like us!

I love Daisy but have to point out the double decker bus predated the 60s by decades. I think there were even horse drawn double decker omnibuses. Maybe you mean the Routemaster bus?

Hello Trish, Quite right, the Routemaster bus is shown in the video at 38 seconds in. Thanks very much for getting in touch!
