Thank you so much for this introduction to bowls..I am a total newbie to the game and the complexities of this fascinating game are explained well. I particularly like your explanation of the various roles of the players. Logical and common sense in abundance , well done for creating the time to address some of the issues we newbies (older newbie in my case ) encounter . My location is in Norfolk so as winter is almost upon us I am restricted to the indoor rink until next year . Let’s hope I notice some positive progression by then !
Hi Alec. I’m in Australia, I started lawn bowling a month ago and I LOVE it. I’m learning 4 days a week with Blokes that are really helpful and I am being taught by Blokes like myself, retired, I follow your tutorials and if I can find myself a good book on bowling I will grab it. I’m playing Lead. Neville.
It sounds like you are doing well, Neville. Thanks for the kind comments. Lead is my favourite position, if you do it well you will be very much in demand.

Thanks Alec... Wise words indeed, particularly regarding the conduct of the Skip and the Mental pressure that can be put on your team. I am learning so much from your wisdom. Thanks Again! Andy
That was very useful Alec , my club have said I should start thinking of putting my name forward for friendlies & certain league matches which are good to start off in , I have really been enjoying my bowling & had lots of good comments , they can’t believe I’ve never bowled before Thanks for the programs have helped me immensely Colin

Hi Alec, I reviewed this video again before my first game for Didcot last weekend at West Oxfordshire in which we played well enough to come away with a win. Our Captain had me playing lead in one of three triples so your advice came in very handy. West Oxfordshire is a nice club with some very nice people so it was a good day out if a little hot at mid afternoon. Thanks again for making the videos and good luck for the rest of the season.
Hi Alec Entered my 1st club competition today, fours tournament, can’t believe I was on the winning team & was congratulated on my bowls , told by all how well I’m doing considering I’ve only been playing 5 weeks Thanks you your TH-cam channels information has really helped Colin
Hi Alec I am retiring this year and have just finished a full week of having very good instruction from John my trainer at Sully indoor bowels vale of Glamorgan. But I have also found your information and instructions of great help. I have the bug for the game and have already made friendships. Thank you Alec for sharing your vast experience in the which is it helping us new bowlers to understand the game better.
Great video with lots of insight. I only bowled for the first time outside last weekend so am just a beginner. Planning to go for a few more roll up sessions at the Didcot Bowls Club. Explanation of the various roles in the four was thorough and very useful. Keep up the good work and thanks for making the videos.
Glad it was helpful! And good luck with your bowls. I have never played at Didcot, although it is only about an hour away from me. It looks nice though.
hi Alec this is very good infomation we have some new players joining this summer if the league goes ahead very glad i found the sport 3 years sgo and already done league games as skip and always encourage my players during the match look forward to more videos 😁
Hi Alec just a quick question please , I've just taken up bowls at the grand old age of 79 I've had a bit of problem finding a foot placement that suits me , one of bowlers suggested I try the shooter stance because it helps with my balance wonder if you have any thoughts.? Many thanks Nev.
It is worth trying as I know some who find it helps. Balance is so important, so if it helps your balance then it may help your delivery. I tried it, but I didn't quite get the hang of it, but I think it is worth a go. Let me know if it helps.
Well done for a most helpful series of videos. As someone who regularly meets new bowlers and is concerned with rules, I wonder if you could create a video that explains the basic rules regarding touchers, and rebounds from the ditch, and what happens when touchers in the ditch get disturbed by dead bowls. All these have happened to me in the past week. Also have you covered basic etiquette?
Hi Alec... Please may I ask you a question? When driving a shot, does the Bias have any influence at all? Or is the influence of the Bias completely dissipated when driving the Bowl at speed? Thanks very much! Andy
Hi Andy. Yes, the bias will still come into play but mostly when the bowl slows down. So if the bowl is still traveling fast when it reaches the target it will not deviate much. It definitely worth practicing. As a rule of thumb reduce the line by half of your normal draw line and see how that works.
Thank you for this Alec. I feel vindicated in my feeling pressurised. I only started playing last Monday (14th June 2021) and have been put in to two matches already. Both times at Lead. Thursday night was very difficult as the greens ran super quick. Kept being asked to put the jack longer but could not execute as I was too nervous about launching into the ditch. Funnily enough, it started raining and then I played much better, as the pace slowed and it was a lot more like my home clubs green! We have a friendly today and I'm going to ask to play in 2nd position 😀
Well done Jeremy, it seems you are doing well. I prefer fast greens, but some of my mates prefer slower, so not everyone is the same. Fine adjustments on fast greens can be tricky, so maybe you adjust better on slower greens. If you have been asked to lead, they obviously feel you are up to the job, so take it as a compliment. A good lead is like gold dust, so keep up the good work.
@@LawnBowlsforFun I think on a green that is slower, there are naturally more gears you can go through to get a desired result. It's easier to adjust for sure. Same for when I played American Pool. I do have a question based on todays game. The skip was telling me to play a shot that was not on with the woods I'm using, as the bias doesn't turn in enough. It was a shot only really possible with Lignoids or similar. Is it considered poor etiquette to challenge what the skip is telling you? Or is it reasonable to say "I'm sorry but I cannot execute the shot with this wood" I did what he asked but I knew even before releasing the bowl that the shot wasn't on
Yes, as sadly some clubs don't help new bowlers enough. We do ask out club members to keep an eye on new players and give them advice. In the main I think that happens at my club although it could always be improved. We also hold advanced coaching sessions for those that want more help, but we can't be there all the time, which is why it is important that other experienced players do their bit. Good point though, and thanks.
Thanks Alec, as a lawn ball connosieur I really like balls, will you provide your balls to me so me and my friends can play with them. Some are hesitant to play with an old mans balls but I say it'll be a learning experience. I enjoyed it when my mates play with my balls so hopefully we can all BALL out! I have just made a video on touchers, but am still editing it due to a sound fault. I will try and publish in the next week.
Where can I buy the guidance for bowls book. I've looked on amazon.
