    Trivia: The Alexandria Sub used to be much longer and continue south at Coteau Station all the way to Cantic (where it crosses Rouses Point sub) and what is now the Swanton spur to Vermont. The tracks from Coteau to Valleyfield and now the Valleyfield sub and CN doesn't continue past Valleyfield, but connsects to CSX (ex New York central) tracks that go to Syracuse NY. This "full" Alexandria sub allowed CN to compete against New York Central that had tracks from USA through Cornwall and all the way to Ottawa. The building of St-Lawrence seaway would have required total bridge changes at Cornwall and line abandonned.

      Thanks Bill! These new units are smoother than the other cars in VIA’s fleet and quieter inside too. A real joy. The seats are so new they aren’t yet quite as comfortable though. Montréal is a beautiful city full of much history and amazing sights. It was occupied by the revolutionary army but then lost during the U.S. war of independence. It’s basilicas and cathedrals are amongst the most stunning in North America. I love the fact that last summer we moved close enough to Montréal to be able to make day trips. If I got on the train at my town of Casselman it would have only been 1.5 hours to Central Station in Montreal.

    Hawthorne to just beyond Casselman is the stretch where trains are allowed to go to 150 and sometimes cheat to 160kmh. When train stops at Casselman, it prevents westbound trains to make up time if late because that is where they would normally be able to go above scheduled speed.

    Find fact: the René Lévesque road between the Queen Elizabeth hotel and Place Ville Marie (betwene Mansfield and Robert Bourassa roads) is actually a bridge structure with many levels under street level, one of which contains 2 streets. On the western side, steet starts at Chatchart and heads south Through Place Ville marie to serve both the PVM and Queen Elizaneth parking lots. On the eastern site, starre starts south at Belmont (where the station strcuture is viible) and goes inder René Lévesque to serve the shipping/receiving for all of Place Ville Marie as well as the 800 René Lévesque office building.

    at 09:30, the turnoff is to an old explosives storage facility that stood between CN Kingston and CP's Winchester sub (with connections to both). It is notable because it is also where the Expo Express trains from 1967 were stored for many many years before being sold to some outfit in mexico. It is also the land that CP had purchased (or ready to purchase) to make its eastern rail terminus and yards as part of its strategy to leave Québec. (and was contingent on highway 30 being built so it could dump all the containers onto trucks to go east of there. And why Canadian Tire built its eastern distribution centre at Coteau nearby (which ironically never got connection to CP,'s tracks). CP Québec which had been setup to go bankrupt so CP could ditch it ended becoming profitable and was re-integrated into CP Rail and the Les Cèdres project was quietly shelved.

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Also very awesome information! I seem to recall knowing CP tracks in Quebec went to another operator or subsidiary and then back to CP. The last time I visited the area before moving here last August I remember a CP double track mainline and was surprised to find it single tracked now.

    • @jfmezei
      @jfmezei 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks CP split what was left of its Québec tracks into separate subsidiary (Chemin de Fer Canadien Pacific Québec). It had tracks to Montréal, the yard in Lachine, tracks to port of Montréal, and Tracks to Ste-Thérèse and a very short part of tracks to Hull (to serve a remaining customer). It also had the south shore tracks to Delson and Farnham, and rhe former D&H line from Delson to the border. After its decision to re-integrate the QC operations, Lac Mégantic happened and the fed govt convinced CP to take its former tracks back and maintain them safely so it now once gain owns the farnham to the main border tracks. And the signage on the level crossing say "Canadian Pacific" not "Canadien Pacifique". The Winchester sub from Smith Falls to Dorion was single tracked on the Ontario side, but remains twin tracks on the québec side except for the first 5km east of Ontario border. Not privy if single tracking to Dorion is still to come or of CP needs that section to stack trains until they get clear track to Smith falls ad then to Toronto. On the plus side, they upgraded from 1930s ABS signals to 1950s CTC with dual directio which the double tracks didn't have west of Dorion. (the AMT/EXO had paid for signal upgrades from montreal to Dorion to allow trains to run in either direction).

    The wye at Glen Robertsson isn't really a wye but the connection to the Vankleek Sub that goes nrth to Hawkesbury and l'Orignal, though when it is to be abandonned, this does become a wye if the tracks are left. CN had spun oiff Vankleek sub to a short line and bought it back some years ago.

      @@Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks I think it was Ottawa Central but not 100% sure. They had contract with a wood company in L'orignal/Hawkesbury to bring the stuff to a paper mill in Ottawa area. But with loss of both bridges between Ottawa and Hull, they couldn't serve the big pulp customer across the river.

  • @jfmezei

    You showed the CN logo at central station. While built by CN in early 1940s, the station has since been sold, in particular Cominar (real estate fir) has the shopping level) and as part of stealing as much infrastruicture as it could, CDPQ bought ALL tracks and platforms at Central station from CN as well as the elevated tracks south of station and the tunnel. It permanently condemned tracks 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 (5-7 and 7-8 were under the "Meubles RD" store and were closed after the big VIA cuts of 1989 t allow commuter trains to use more "central" tracks. CDPQ only needs 2 traacks for iutrs REM but took over 40% of the capacty of the station. (8 of roughly 20 tracks) as well as ripping out all electrification and leaving VIA and commiuters only 3 of the original 6 tracks leaving station towards south. When CDPQ pitched the project for approval, the plane was to use the tracks below what was then the Staples store (now Meubles RD) so as to not reduce tran capaocity, but once approved, it quietly bought all traacks and condemened a whole bunch of them. This is not documented in Canada but is documented in US congress because it was one of major reasons for Amtrak being unable to restart the Adirondack train because CDPQ would not honour Amtrak's contract with CN and when it finally did, only gave the train a terrible departure time of 11:00 which means much of trip to new York is in darkness.

    Well Dad and I enjoyed that ride. A beautiful day, and nice to see the scenery and features go by.
    My attention sparked up at the swing bridge at 17:30. I felt I recognised it! Would you know if that's the one Buster Keaton filmed a scene of The Railrodder on? I just checked and it's much less built up but the bridge looks VERY similar, and there is a line in the background which would be the one you are riding on, (if it is the one). Hmmm.... 🤔

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It absolutely is the same swing bridge. The CN only had a short overhead electric line and that was to pull trains into the tunnel under downtown Montréal. That was the line I was on in the video. The electrified line emerged north of Mount Royal past downtown and there were no similar water features or any swing bridge up there. So it has to be it.
