I bought a 2022 Crosstrek Outdoor trim last summer - LOVE it so far. I would absolutely echo the "go for the 2.5L engine" statement. The 2.5L handles highway speeds with ease while the 2.0L certainly works a lot harder. If you play to carry anything on a roof rack like I do (sea kayaks, in my case), that 2.5L again makes it easy.
As for the new generation, aesthetically, I prefer my Gen2. Externally they don't look all that different, internally, I don't like the new dash layout as much as mine - especially the move to the big-dumb-screen. I really hate the infotainment systems having giant screens - it's distracting. The Gen2's had a screen that was just the right size while the Gen3s now have a giant screen that kind of dominates the centre dash (much like the Outbacks). But that's minor details really and down to personal preference. The _important_ thing is that they stuck with the drivetrain and mechanicals that were proven and work well. I think anyone that gets one with the 2.5L would be very happy with it.
*Fuel Economy Tip:* (first a bit of explanation) For anyone with a recent Crosstrek (and probably other CVT driven Subarus) you're probably aware there are two drive modes - I and S. "I" is intelligent mode which is efficiency focused, and "S" is sport mode. All they do is change the simulated shift points of the CVT so that Sport mode takes the engine to higher RPMs, closer to its optimum power output. Lots of vehicles have this nowadays - hardly unique to Subaru. What's different, however, is behaviour on the highway. I've noticed that if you leave the vehicle in "Sport" mode, it will run at about 500rpm higher when cruising on the highway. I guess the logic being that any touch of the pedal will get you a bit snappier response. The downside is you're going to go through about 20 to 25% more fuel than using Intelligent mode. So my suggestion is if you like it being more zippy in Sport mode, fine - use it, but once you get on the highway and are cruising, put it in Intelligent mode to the best efficiency.

    • @Veeetz
      @Veeetz ปีที่แล้ว

Can you switch between modes (ie. from S to I) mid drive? Meaning, I have it in S mode when on the on-ramp getting onto the highway where I need to accelerate to merge with the flow of traffic, then can I switch (while moving at high speed) to I mode? I just wasn't sure if it can only be changed when from a dead stop.

    • @Dakiraun
      @Dakiraun ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Veeetz Oh yeah, you can can change it on the fly, no problem. All it does is tell the computer to change (simulated) shift points. So yes, if you prefer S for on-ramps, merging, and whatnot - keep using it, then switch to I when all set and cruising.

Thanks for the review Shari !
The Crosstrek is a bit too small for our needs.
This is why we bought the Forester touring for me. My wife loves her Outback.
We have an older couple who live down the road from us who bought a Crosstrek for her.
They have the 2.5L and get 35mpg on the freeway when they drive to Spokane Washington USA.
If Subaru would manufacture a reliable hybrid we would trade our Outback and our Forester in .

I love the Crosstrek. It is very much a Goldilocksy "just right" vehicle in a lot of ways. There are downsides like the cargo space, the horsepower, etc; but all of the pros tend to make up for it - reliability, utility, tech package, etc.
I ended up going for a Lexus, but Subarus were a close second

  • @matt.canada

Thanks for the review which is one of the first from Canada on the 2024 Crosstrek. I'm loving my 2023 Crosstrek Outdoor (USA "Sport"). It's practical and reliable in the harsh Alberta winter. I'm glad I was able to get the 2023 model after seeing the changes on the 2024. While the exterior styling of the 2024 Crosstrek looks cool, I can't see the 2024 model as an upgrade from the previous model. Here are my thoughts on the 2024 model:
    - the large infotainment screen is a dealbreaker. It's only good aesthetically. It's impractical and perhaps unsafe if you try to use it during driving. (Not to mention if the screen response is sluggish as Shari found). Voice command may be available but how many words would you need to say for one command, when you could just reach out your hand to a knob and turn in 1 second?
    - No StarTex seats in the Onyx trim as in the 2021-23 Outdoor. Another letdown.
    - as Shari mentioned in the video, the 2024 prices are $2000 CAD more than the 2023 models, which are already $1000 above the 2022 models! (that is $3000 more than the 2022 models. An upgrade in pricing!).
    - I wonder how the gold exterior accents will hold up in time. Will they make the car look cool longer, or will they make it look outdated sooner?
    - the new wheel cladding is really an acquired taste! I like the wheel cladding on my Outdoor, which makes the car look more rugged than other trims, yet not too aggressive imo
-I do like the new exterior colours on the 2024
As a side note, - totally agreed with Shari on the engine options. The 2.0L engine is too sluggish. Test drove it and had to floor it for the car to slowly roll out of the intersection. I just did not feel safe. The 2.5L engine is quiet, has adequate power and good real world fuel economy (I'm getting 8L to 9L/100 km winter, city driving!).

Current limited Crosstrek (leather interior, CVT, 2.5 with 182hp) is 30k (Approx MSRP).
Current CX-30 Turbo (premium) gets you a leather interior, a better auto tranny and 250hp for 35k.
Subaru’s AWD is “better” but the average owner will hardly ever need it. The Subaru has more interior room but it’s poorly designed and cheap. The Mazda feels more refined with a higher end feel. But the power alone in the CX-30 turbo is worth the extra cash.
I use to own a few Subarus (including a Crosstrek) but their overall design is stagnant. They’ve doubled down on the plastic cladding but it just looks dated. And for those of you who haven’t heard, the Subaru infotainment is a laggy, unintuitive disaster. It’s among the worst on the market.
Take the CX-30 (Turbo if you can) if you want a car in this segment with a proper auto trans, actual thought out interior design, and a vehicle with truly applicable power for everyday use.

@mandomonica there's virtually no difference between the manual & CVT Crosstrek with the 2.0
I test drove both with a Passport GT-2 performance computer plugged in. The only difference is what your brain thinks you feel, lol.
On the computer there's a whopping .2 tenths (9.0 vs 8.8) difference 0 - 60 & the 1/4 mile time and speed are right at 16.8 - 17.0 with identical speeds of right at 83 mph and some change.
In case you're curious, yes I've owned and driven a few manuals over the last 40 years, lol. Inc. a 4-speed Chevelle, 5-speed Mustang GT & a currently a 6-speed GS Vette.
      I ended up ordering a 2.5 Limited, it gets you more than a second 0 - 60. And a high 15.9 to 16 flat @ 88+ mph in the 1/4.
These are numbers at about 950 ft above sea level.

Well the Crosstrek is and always has been no more than a compact hatchback with a lifted suspension.

It’s noisy and expensive to repair. Oh yes. It’s also very ugly.

That huge touchscreen is horrendous. Other car makers putting these in thier vehicles as well. Cars are for driving not as a rolling entertainment center. Already have to put all this technology junk in cars (blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, autonomous braking , etc) to keep the fools on cell phones from killing other drivers, but hey!, Let's add another big distraction!

I was close to purchasing a Crossover-Until learning that Subaru is a dishonest and corrupt company with unscrupulous business practices, putting out crappy cars.

Are you speaking of Subaru at a corporate or dealer level? This is odd because I have found Subaru dealers to be more honest than the others I have checked with. Please give examples.

They've eliminated the manual, the eyesight crap now looks at the driver and you cant get the car without that crap, the touchscreen is now massive stupid and they have integrated EVERYTHING. I like the separate mechanical controls for heat, defrosters and seats.
They've eliminated much of what I like about my 2022 manual. They can keep it for me

Okay so do I'm have to completely disagree with you I'm I'm watching this video and you are not describing this new 2024 Crosstrek right you're not giving it any justice this was a pretty big redesign the only did they tweet the outside of the vehicle you have a new front fascia you have new rear tail lights that go deeper into it into the vehicle I mean you have that new interior which was the same is more buttons and stuff like that but that huge 11.6 inch display that is tremendous and the the colors
