    My view on this is build what you want and anyone that protests is not worth your time. Sisters of Battle aren’t a good analogue as they are specifically distinct from Marines, using faith in the Emperor for their power rather being genetically and physically superior to regular humans. If they can write lore that enables primaris marines then they can easily produce lore that enables female marines.
    An interesting parallel is Stormcast, with a clean slate GW easily put female stormcast right in there and they are as analogous to marines as you get in AoS. Untethered from decades of lore it’s very obvious that GW are focussing a lot more on equal representation in some factions within AoS.
    As a space wolf player I’ve found that snow is easy to make by mixing snow flock, white acrylic modelling paste and PVA glue. Mix the snow flock and acrylic paste until you get a stiff mixture and then add the PVA until it loosens up. This should give you a snow paste that holds its shape pretty well and looks like trodden snow when set, sprinkle snow flock over the top of the still wet mix to get a fluffy snow effect if desired.
    Great job with the mini diorama!

    Gender politics have little use in the Imperium. The Cult of the Emperor in the Imperium is roughly based on the Roman Catholic Church. Space Marines are as much monks as they are soldiers and sisters of battle are just as much nuns as they are soldiers.

    • @03dashk64
      @03dashk64 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gender politics have little use in the Imperium. Therefore, it is silly to remove half of the population from a pool of applicants to be turned into super soldiers.
      Make female space marines.
      Make brothers of battle.
      FOR THE LOVE OF GOD UPDATE THE IMPERIAL GUARD AND ELDAR.

    • @beaushaver3779
      @beaushaver3779 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Imperium doesn't dabble in gender politics it deals only in faith and order. Like the Catholic Church they deal in ideological absolutes. To quote the rule book "An open mind is an unguarded fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded." Women are allowed to fight in the Imperial Guard and the Sister's. There's no troop strength loss there.

    • @03dashk64
      @03dashk64 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beaushaver3779 but the lore is flexible and malleable. It is there to support the sale of miniatures. It is not some immutable certainty. If it were, Tau wouldn’t be in the game. Neither would Primarus marines.
      Lore changes as the game progresses. There are only no lady space marines right now because the original models didn’t sell well in Rogue Trader. That’s it.
      There is no good reason not to have female space marines except for what you’ve quoted, lore. Lore can and does change all the time. Remember when Space Wolves (about as un-monk like as you can get) we’re allowed to take Leman Russ tanks? They sure can’t do that now. Lore changed to reflect that rule too.
      It’s time lore changed enough to allow everyone into the poster child faction instead of telling them “oh no girls in this faction, but it’s ok, there is a whole faction of girls!”

    Hello Lyla,
    Here is a suggestion for your winter wonderland work in progress. Spray a lite dusting of matt varnish or clear varnish on your diorama then with a powder sugar duster sprinkle a combination of table salt, granulated sugar powdered sugar baking soda over the wet varnish then tip your diorama upside down and shake off the excess. 😉 this prosess can be repeated until you achieve your desired look.
    P.S. I was one of the people who suggested blue stuff. 😉

      i already asked myself why they stay as male/female, if i understand correctly their corpses are reconstructed as they was dying right? why letting them as a male or female then, this is probably better to format them as a "better" version, and since it cost energy from Sigmar to recreate them (and gender organs for example) making them as "perfect" clones would be better (but i don't know AOS that much, and maybe there is something blocking sigmar to do it that way)

    Great topic! Awesome conversion and paint job.
    I think as a hobbyist you can and should do what you want. That’s what makes the hobby fun. Having friends to hobby with and play games that have a good attitude is what’s important. Wish I had a female counter part to do hobby with. I’d support her 110%.
    That being said….I’m going to poke a little fun at ourselves.
    The lore says space marines are sterile. They don’t have families, they can live hundreds of years, which means no real attachments and function emotionally more like robots. If you want a female looking version of that in a more “masculine” looking armor I say go for it. Let’s talk about these “cool” space marines that “we” want to fit into and make representations of ourselves to be (and I’ve modeled too). The lore is that these are warrior monk, emotionless, feel no pain, no surrender, fight to the death, no retreat, emotionally muted former humans who’ve been flushed with chemicals and multiple organ surgeries. They might look like men, sorta, but they have no emotion like you’d find in a Imperial Guard unit. Even the Sisters of Battle are probably just as emotionally detached as Space Marines from society. They are Warrior Nuns without the massive invasive surgeries and chemical washes. They are more interested in barbecuing their enemies alive then giving or receiving love letters. I’d guess that Space Marines and Sisters of Battle would fit into multiple categories of the DSM-V. We’ve got marine chapters themed to all kinds of stuff already. White scars are Khan themes. Blood Angels look Roman. Space Wolves look Viking. Etc. I’m totally ok with a mixed fighting force of any gender or racial make up, whatever. Personally, I think I would be cool to start recruiting Xenos like the tau into human ranks like the tau, by lore, can recruit humans into their ranks. Makes the hobby more interesting and fun.
    Do we need more space marines though…. Lol…. I guess so…. Just be a good sport when the Ad Mech, Drukhari or whoever is OP at the time crushes you.

    For a first kitbash this is amazing and better than where my current skills are. And I'm all for heresy
    As for for female space marines: I really have no strong feelings one way or the other. Sure, now there is lore reason why not, but it's a fictional universe and easily could add something in. At the same time I often feel it's a disservice to both sides just to take something that already exists for male characters and just copy it to female characters. Female heroes are better when they are their own persons rather than just clones of male counterparts. But I will never discourage anyone who wants to make all female chapters. I love to see other people's takes on things. Part of what makes this hobby interesting

    Male here, and sisters of battle collector, i love the modern female models. That said, GW just produce what sells, and will be a demand for woman space marines the’ll produce them even if lore wise space marines are genetic experiments carring the Emperror’s genes. In the last years we’ve seen a lot of interest toward female characters (female stormcast eternals, female genestealer cult magus, the goddess of the sylvaneth, a whole new sisters of battle army…) time will tell.

    As a Chaos Space Marine player fielding both Death Guard and Black Legion and homebrew, I can tell you that heretical is good. The kit-bash looks good and inspired. As far as whether there should be female space marines...maybe? I think it depends on how it's done. If they end up hyper-sexualized, then maybe not, if it's done with the same care as the new-ish female commissar? Sure, definitely. As far as the lore goes, sure officially there is no female space marines, but that doesn't mean you can't come up with your own reasons why *your* army exactly has female space marines.

    In the lore, it was said that because the Emperor was obviously male, he wanted it so that his Angels of Death would be easy to create via scientific processes by keying the Astartes implants to male zygotes to make the surgical processes much more easier to understand for himself. I could imagine he didn't want to mess up a perfectly healthy and fit female candidate in case of any mistake brought on by unreliability because whilst he could know about and understand the biology of a female human, he didn't exactly know EVERYTHING about the nooks an crannies of the form and didn't want to risk anything. The risk is already high enough because when the aspirants go through the surgeries, they have to be awake AT ALL TIMES and may die from the pain as a result of the previously 19, now 21 surgeries and implants.
    Speaking of which, Belisarius Cawl, Archmagos Dominus of the Adeptus Mechanicus, created Primaris Space Marines which are stronger, faster and better in every way (which pissed off a lot of the community). They apparently yield a far superior closeness in geneseed purity to their Primarchs, their fathers and the Emperor's demigod sons, which can probably alter the narrative on Adepta Astartes and actually bring them into the setting. I mean, they have female Stormcast Eternals. I, for one, would welcome this change, although if they had the helmets on, you probably wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

    interesting take as far as women space marines go well GW made the Sisters of Battle for that role will GW ever make female Space Marines i seriously doubt it although they did make female Stormcast which was cool, but if you look at the GW range as a whole there are very few female models most of them are male which i think kinda reflects the over all assumption that men are the warriors and fighters and so on is it right no, but its what we have to work with, as for women being welcomed into the hobby there have been massive leaps forward in that since i started in the hobby nearly 25 years ago, GW even now feature female staff on their painting tutorial videos to encourage women/girls into the hobby....great video and dont worry about the kit bashing problem lots of people struggle with it when they start doing it, me included

  • @mogwaiman6048

    They were a thing dating back to Rogue Trader. I think GW decided to rollback on the concept because they pursued the Sisters of Battle instead. There are also the Sisters of Silence who fight alongside the Adeptus Custodes.

    I don't get the complaints either way. Lore says they can't happen so just run a female army. Or swap out for female heads. Just don't expect decades of lore and by now tradition to change. Hell last month they reconfirmed woman can not become space marines, so don't expect that to change when it comes to official stuff.

  • @LordPadriac
    @LordPadriac 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So I don't really care about female space marines in general or not and calling the space marines the main characters is a bit of a stretch these days. There are also plenty of places where there are females present in other armies and even entire armies that are exclusively female. I don't see the need specifically to shoehorn female space marines into the lore to satisfy some fanatical need for gender equality when that equality already exists in the game and when shoehorning male characters into the all female armies would not be seen as equality but disempowering. Whatever that means when we're talking about tiny plastic figures one inch tall. All that said I also don't have any issue with someone kitbashing their own female space marines for their personal armies or displays. I've seen some very impressive work doing just that. However I do see three very good reasons for there to be no female space marines.
    Reason 1: I've seen some of those early female space marine models. Even in the 80s there were plenty of female players. The reason male and female players didn't buy too many of them and why stores started requesting that games workshop stop sending them is because the sculpts were fucking terrible. Like truly awful. Now this could be gotten around by getting better sculpts in high quality plastic and resin like the current minis but I would still argue against it. There are mixed gender armies and units and single gender armies and units and that brings it's own balance to the game. Plus the future is supposed to be dark and regressive in many ways. The idea of regressive and segregationist gender policies helps add to that atmosphere.
    Reason 2: Just practically speaking, in universe, the point of the space marines was to create the most physically powerful and imposing warriors from human stock possible. The Emperor was not concerned with gender equality but the cold hard facts of the science. That would naturally lend itself to male stock. Remember that in many ways the future is ass backwards. Think more like the brutal WWI trench fighting than the high tech long distance combat of the Iraq war, either Iraq war. There is high tech weaponry but a lot of the combat is in your face and hand to hand. In today's military a woman can indeed perform just as well as a comparably trained man. However if you remove the distance and some of the high tech and change the combat to a much more in your face style of fighting and you would naturally choose well trained male warriors every time. Even if you're able to genetically modify something as complex as a human in the ways 40K says humans were altered you'd only be able to alter what was already there. Male and females have fundamentally different physiologies such that even if you genetically altered a female in the same way she would still be less physically imposing than a male counterpart. In a universe that depends on brutal physical strength in combat as much as 40K does you would be very hard pressed to find a reason to choose a female over a male.
    Reason 3: 40K is a bizarre and extreme evolution of our own society based on some extremely fantastical events and an ocean of time separating now from then. However there are some similarities and historical patterns. When you consider that in 40K the Imperial Truth was long since corrupted into the Imperial Religion the gender separation of the armies makes sense both in universe and as a historical evolution. If the Imperium is centered around worship of the God Emperor then the different Chapters of the Imperium and the societies that evolved around the different official offices of the Imperium that exist to serve that religion would tend to naturally be segregated by gender much like the Christian monastic orders of the Middle Ages and how the remaining orders of monks and nuns still stay separate to this day. The simple reason being that your life's purpose is to serve your god. Anything else is a distraction and a sin. You insulate yourself from the temptations of the world by renouncing wealth and taking vows of poverty. You insulate yourself from pride and ambition by taking vows of service. You insulate yourself from temptations of the flesh and heart by taking vows of celibacy and segregating yourself from the opposite sex as much as possible. Even if the Emperor had created female space marines the male and female space marines would have naturally begun to segregate themselves over the millennia until the idea of mixed gender Chapters would seem almost heresy against the Emperor. And we know what happens to heretics.

    On the Woman space marine argument, I am of no strong opinion either way. If they do decide to do so good for them, if not, also good. My request would be it needs to find a way to fit into the lore. Like someone else said on this vid, the Primaris introduction could have been a great time for it. #1 rule always is build/paint your models however you want as long as it makes you happy. If someone were to bring a well done female space marine army to the table I would be glad to play them any day of the week as long as they are a good sport.
    That being said, I think this hyperfocus on FEMALE SPACE MARINES from outside the community largely comes from a pop culture/social pressure place and not from people actually in the hobby who are looking for representation. The whole thing spits on all of the equally interesting factions and models with female sculpts/inclusion. It seems so disingenuous to complain about the ONE major faction in the whole universe that is 'boys only' on end when there are so many others that aren't. It's one of the core components of what makes the Space Marine faction special in the first place. Lore and universe immersion are important to me because I like the stories and the worldbuilding; erasing all of that because someone doesn't feel comfortable playing with male models in this one specific faction just seems needlessly destructive and brash when there are plenty of other equally interesting factions to pick from.
    TL:DR if you don't like those particular toys don't play with them.

      It's not about being uncomfortable playing with male models. It's about the way females are depicted. Before the Sisters of battle, most females were depicted as sexy or less powerful. Even with the sisters, they are still made to 'show their body'. Their armour is designed to pop the boobs, which is a terrible idea because of projectile reflection etc(i know bringing reality into a wargame).
      We are not saying .... replace everything. Male models are bad. We just want more representation in the hobby in a respectful way.

      A quick point… the reason space marines are all men (and mostly white men) is because those were the people playing the game almost exclusively. If you want a more diverse crowd (meaning more players) you can’t push them out by saying “men only” and then present them with nothing but Uber mensch models. That’s not going to be very inviting, and it’s going to earn players a reputation for being pretty toxic. And deservedly so.
      Who cares if we add female space marines? Does it really change anything? Not from a gameplay perspective and not really from a lore perspective either.
      It’s wise to not gatekeeper over things like this and it’s wiser still to recognize gatekeeping when it’s happening.

    • @_nixxie_
      @_nixxie_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@stevenwitcher8087 Exactly. And so many people have said you can't criticize the game lore if you are new to the game or that you can't change lore so go play something else. At what point are you considered not a newbie and can voice your criticisms.
      Sure that is fine if other people play different systems in the area, however, this is often not the case and have to play 40k or AoS as they are the popular wargames.

    Okay my opinion on female spaces marines may sound negative and insulting but that is not my intention, so here's my opinion on the matter.
    If a woman was to under go the extensive body modifications (extra organs, muscles growth and enhancements, skeletal manipulation as well as some others)
    Your female subject will now be standing at around 7 feet tall and weigh in at around 200 pounds her body would resemble something close to a competitive body builder, any feminine features in her face will be lost due to such.
    So the interest in such models would be rather low and not cost effective to create, print, box and ship.
    But with saying that, this is a new era so perhaps at the very least have a "make to order" option.. hell GW could/would charge more per model
    Those are just my thoughts, I am on planning to add some sisters of battle to my marines just for my head cannon.

    Ok, hot opinion time. please know that I'm not some toxic ass, and yes i am a man. in my opinion i don't think that there needs to be any female space marine. for a few reasons, 1. it is written in the lore and although yes it would be possible to change , it would be a really big change and hard to make it not sound tacked on. 2. the hole topic is strange. imagine if you will, all space marines were female from the very beginning. i don't think many people would complain, mostly because they would get called sexist, its kind of a double standard. a perfect example would be if they started making sisters of battle unites mixed genders. as a sisters of battle player, i think that would be a little dumb. 3. if people want female space marines they can make their own, this video is awesome, i love the model and the work you do is epic. so if people want to do this they can, so i don't think GW needs to write female space marines into the lore. again its cool if anyone disagrees with me, this is just my view.
    (PS: don't worry, kit bashing is hard, i still get nerves when ever i start cutting models up to make something new, you just get better with practice.)

      @stephenrider6107 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Assuming none of us are toxic asses, I want to offer responses to your points, not sure that they're really a rebuttle.
      1) The lore was created to serve the buying habits in the 1980s...not exactly deep and meaingful starting point. That the battlebros are post-human asexual, aromantic meatrobots that live to kill and nothin' else isn't exactly an ideal that I think any healthy person would aspire to and that leads into the a point that I don't think a lot of people appreciate, Warhammer 40k has a lot of satire in it, including the Space Marines. People don't see that and that's why people want more intigration. One of the other 28mag inspired videos (th-cam.com/video/FNsKXidaQ3U/w-d-xo.html) points out that it's very likely that, given, the Space Marine process starts pre-puberty, that male and female bodies would end up Space Marine like in the same form. So allowing Primaris (Marine 2.0) to be 'built' from either prepubesene males or females wouldn't be a stretch in the lore and wouldn't need any more minis.
      2) I agree with this point. A full female army wouldn't have issues of discrimination, it'd likely have other issues due to bikini-armor and other tropes. I'll point out that the vast, vast majority of historical wargaming doesn't have openly female presenting characters in them generally. That's the sucky thing about tropes, they exist in context and while an individual example of a trope can make great sense, when that's the only expression of the trope you see, it becomes problomatic.
      The Sisters of Battle are an interesting example that is getting better, but in the begining were 100% for the male gaze. corsets and high heels don't exactly make sense when dealing with a battlefield. They're also not the flagship force of the game, though this too is getting better.
      3) All other things being equal, this makes total sense and given the number of conversions that I've enjoyed watching on TH-cam, I totally appreciate. Where it runs into problems is some of GW's policies on third party elements. If you buy a female head off Cults3d...you can't use it in a tournament army. th-cam.com/video/e6x7ZWf63cg/w-d-xo.html now is that a realistic issue for a lot of people? Hard to say, does it make a barrier? I think Games Workshop should get to choose one of the two, but not both.

      @@stephenrider6107 your argument for point 1. Is interesting, I need to read up on my lore for space marine in lore creation. Argument for 2. Definitely agree, I don’t have any problems with sexy characters or sexy designs but in terms of armoured bikinis they are so stupid, that’s a really big reason why I love the sisters of battle, I don’t think they’re very overly sexualized, just genuinely bad ass space nuns and I love it. I think some of the models fail a little bit at portraying this just because of the scale, and the need for more exaggerated proportion’s. 3. Given GW and the new IP changes, I think the community as a whole is being oppressed a bit. But it is completely in their right to ban 3rd party or 3D printed stuff from their Tournaments, as sucky as it is.

    Why are there no female Space Marines? Two reasons: One is for the same reason that Mattel don't make realistic Ken dolls: Girls don't WANT them; and the second is that there are virtually no female marines in real life, and the ones that do exist (such as in the US marine corp) are mostly there as diversity-quota hires, and have to be protected by the men if they go anywhere near a battlefield.
    Back in the 1980's when the lore for 40K was being cobbled together, the idea of depicting, in a sci-fi game, women as cannon-fodder on the front line was an ugly one, and I suspect a step too far for Games Workshop and for the 99.99% male fan-base. You can blow up as many men as you want and it's still sci-fi fantasy, but killing women is sinister, in the same way as killing children is sinister. 40K is "grimdark" but not _that_ kind of grimdark.

    Space marines are selected from the strongest individuals from each planets to undergo the transformation. Of course, the "strongest individuals" tend to be male, so probably there is a male centered culture on the process of becoming a Space marine, leaving potential female candidates behind.
    Is that ok? No, by today standards. But it is what you would expect from a ruthless, primitive, superstitious theocracy. Gender equality feels weird in a setting where billions of lives are just a price to pay to protect some old relict.
