I think it's difficult to count on No of good films in Malayalam for an year , They keep on releasing.....
Horror movies not only about some sudden sounds or cringey faces but also lead actors performance and story. Well shane and revathy was 🔥. Do watch it on in good audio system. Gopi Sunder done fantastic job.
Bhootakalam - Bhootam in Malayalam has two meaning as in Sanskrit - " *Past* " & " *Ghosts* " and this is the film is based on .
My observation: [SPOILERS]
In the opening sequence, grandma saw something or experienced the strange happenings and she was scared. That is why she came to Vinu's room. Just like how Vinu goes and sleeps in his mother's room after his strange experiences. They had to change her diaper. She lost control of bladder, because she was scared of something probably. Just how Vinu pissed in pants at his friend's house because he was scared.
My observation: Whatever happened in the climax is their imagination and is happening in their heads.. The mother just decided to support his son consciously or subconsciously during his schizophrenic manifestations.. The clue lies in Shane's conversation with Saiju. When he asks where his mom was during his first encounter, he says his mom wasn't there in her room. But in reality, she was there sleeping like a baby after taking her pills.. As far as his grandmother is concerned she too had a similar history of mental illness..
@@josesamp I have thought about this possibility but cannot conclude on that, because two people can't have same imagination at the same time. They behave like they see the same thing at the same time as if they both actually see something.
Even if it was an imagination, they see: man, woman, and a small kid. Not something scary or random. If they had to imagine the same family who committed suicide, they should have known about the house history and subconscious knowledge about what happened to the previous family. Throughout the movie we don't have any information that Revathi and Vinu already knew about the history of the house. So suddenly seeing those family figures particularly and interacting means, they have probably seen a real encounter.
@@rabeni805 As I mentioned, his mother maybe just playing along subconsciously.. We don't know if both of them are perceiving the same visions. What if what we as the audience saw was a combination of both of their imaginations, part of it from the son and part from the mother? Because, in one of the previous encounters, there was a very loud noise but the mother never heard it.. In the starting of the movie we saw that she is not an avid sleeper and the son could wake her up with the tiniest noise.. And how do you explain my other point about his conversation with the counselor?

Best horror movie from india till date...last 30 minutes will blow your mind and scary...try to watch at night with proper headset...another gift from mollywood🔥

I was not able to watch it at night. Watched it at 10 am in the morning and kept windows and door opened.
I love how the main characters are battling deamons within and outside. Shane's descend into madness was so well portrayed. Shane is arguably one of my favourite actors right now

Review on point. Infact when I saw the trailer, I predicted the story to be a psychological thriller but it proved to be a double bluff. The film pretty much keeps you guessing throughout about the path it's going to take and hence the final act works well. But the whole relationship angle and getting over the past, never really clicked while watching but now it makes sense. Excellent observation

@@insideboy12 I don't think so. It's got a slim possibility now that you mention about it but they don't give you enough reasons to believe that theory. Also I prefer the current understanding better.
I thought it will be a complete psychological thriller, but turned out to be a proper Horror film at the end. A very well made one.
that is the beauty of this movie. it surprises us at the end.

I had watched the movie post my night shift around 3.30 in the morning. I don't know how I survived without a heart attack! It's creep out of me. Great horror movie ever made in Malayalam industry. Shane and Revathy's small detail of expressions still haunting me!!!

What’s the significance of the grandma in the movie? Did she experience the same things like Vinu? Looks like that was probably why she couldn’t sleep well.

Just to share a nostalgia. When I was a kid, I was really scared of this actress who played the role of granny. She had acted in a couple of movies with these ghost like characters. I’m sorry I don’t remember the great actress’s name.

The Hindi content is actually top-notch. The series especially like Scam 92. Im eagerly waiting for Rocket boys, story of Homi Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai. But I have to warn, the in-app experience is a bit bland. The app has some issues and it isn't the same as watching netflix or prime. But content wise, its kinda worth it. Then again, there's always Telegram 😁😝

This movie is an excellent explanation of what untreated ,unattended n neglected clinical depression can lead to....Hats off to the makers n kudos to the cast.what a marvelous performance by Revathy n Shane 👏

Just watched the film, unexpected one. Shane & revathy ma'am 👏👏👏 some scenes relates the youngsters very well. Hatsoff to the whole team.
Everyone talking about the director, music composer, that's good but I think half of credit should go to the mother and son duo acting.
Is it possible that they both were just imagining it. Like Revethy character had stopped her medication and Shane had not slept for days. This could be a hallucination both were experiencing

Simple explanation, Heard the term "Ghost from the past"?, its how you understand it, is it a metaphor or is it a spirit. From my perspective, the paranormal scenes in the climax are how two depressed minds understand and view their problems to over come it, simply by leaving the past behind
The house represents the past. The moment the mother and son talk and connect, the hallucinations become common. But, this time they are there for eachother and together ovecome it. They blame the house (past) and come out finally. The house is a metaphor.
Scene movie 🔥🔥. Must watch everyone. Try to watch without knowing the plot or anything, and try to watch at night with earphones/proper sound system.
A scary movie after a long time. Somehow this movie was effective in frightening us than the English classics. I think this is because of the "relatability factor". The mother son duo, damn. Sent shivers to my spine. Really great acting by the Revathy and male lead.
Initially I thought this movie is based on depression, after sometime I felt it’s on addiction. Towards the end the movie turned to be something else. Indeed a “vague “ movie as you mentioned.
Mollywood is undoubtedly the Best.. Even the low budget films satisfies majority..

One of the best horror movies u will ever see... watching at night with the headphones on gives chills.....how well the silence is used....class..it is the silence thats eerie ..Revati n Shane...u can fee the scariness in their face...top notch acting...music...editing n photography....u can feel the claustrophobia...

The background score plays a huge role in this movie. Big kudos to Gopi Sunder. Use a good headphone to feel it and don't expect any blood sucking creepy ghosts or ugly looking ghosts hiding behind a wall. No... The ghosts don't have any faces.
What if Ari Aster comes to India and made a movie? that's what Boothakaalam is all about! Just Terrific.

I think the ghost was their lonely mind.. until the moment both reconcile and cry it out => the mother and son face the ghost together!! Before that it was him alone.. while she was handling her depression by just sleeping.. taking pills! The family ghost can be there too.. but the ghost family can only attack someone “whom their loved ones also won’t understand!” - dialogue by Vinu

if you are a faint hearted person then dont watch it ....the warning is not for jump scares ..actual scary part is the depressing situation the lead characters go through...the movie has a negative aura around it

I get it. If you are a sensitive person or going through a rough patch I think it adds to that negative aura. I can see totally how movies can do that. Sometimes it’s good to watch a brainless comedy movie after such a serious one to shake off the atmosphere. It’s worse when you sleep right after such a movie and it happens to be the last thought for your brain

I mean also the last scene didn't make sense as the ghost wouldn't have come out as it would have lost its impact, no point in building the scene upto that point if the ghost was going to come out!
IDK if it's a complete horror movie or a psychological thriller .....it becomes horror at the end...so, one of the best Indian horror movies I have seen 🙌
My only question regarding this movie is, how come the lead characters started experiencing all these horrors after the passing away of grand mother but not the 6-7 years they lived in that house
May be the grandmother was the only person who had such experiences and unable to communicate with others and that's y she used to walk into Shane's room middle of the night. After her death ghosts started to appear before others

It isn't just about the basic storyline, but small small events, the whole ambience creation, shots music and all.
Both starts with the death of grandma. In both films, there is a scene in which grandma appears and when the switch is on she disappears. We can find lot of similar non jump scare shots also. Annie visits support group to talk. Asha visits psychiatrist to open up. Both Vinu and Peter are stoners, and are very into partying. They are fearful and their fear peaks in the end and becomes a rewarding experience (same for us viewers). Annie commited suicide under the control of Paimon. Annie's brother also committed suicide. Bhoothakalam's bhootangal also compells humans to suicide. And, oh yeah, remember the dinner scenes?
Both are really good films, and even the titles are similar. But Bhoothakalam lacks the depth of Hereditary. Pratyekich naduvul ulla aa boran pattu bagyathinu Hereditary il illa.
