- Tesla has just confirmed that they are working on an upgrade retrofit for old hardware 3 (hw3) vehicles to be capable of running unsupervised full self driving, and recently we have discovered a new board that does just that currently in production

If this new hardware currently in production ends up being the replacement board for older vehicle, we could see a retrofit very soon possibly even a few months leading up to the Robotaxi launch
They should still honor the hardware swap for owners who choose to keep their vehicle but also give them the option to transfer fsd to a new vehicle AND receive a discount on the vehicle price based on the difference of the fsd purchase price they paid for and the current fsd price. For example if they bought fsd for $15k they would get a $7k discount on the new car.
I think that’s fair and something they should consider yup
Musk honors the Nazis not his customers
This could be a cheaply paid method for subscribers of FSD too rather than full price purchase outright. Maybe $1500 customer pockets out?
We all know it's not called the Model 2. We don't know when there will be any retrofits. They are still working on Current AI3. It may take longer to develop.
That’s true, although they did confirm that the next gen low cost vehicle will be announced this Q2 regardless of what it’s called. Retrofit wise at least we get some kind of official confirmation on a call we can refer back to
With the new Model Y having easily replaceable cameras, I can't help but wonder what would happen if the HW3 cameras prove inadequate. Apparently the wiring there can't handle higher resolution video, and replacing that would be quite expensive. As would retrofitting a bumper camera.
The cameras should be plug and play, wirings should be enough to handle it I believe
Any hw upgrade for hw3 could still be years away in fact the longer they wait the less vehicles left that will need an upgrade
That might be what they are going for ultimately, by the time it’s available there will be less HW3 vehicles on the road
The title a bit misleading and borderline clickbait. They're offering the HW4 upgrade ONLY IF you subscribe to self-driving.
To add on to that, they’ll likely offer HW4 upgrade ONLY IF you purchase FSD outright not subscribe
I doubt many cars will want to be on the Robotaxi platform. Insurance costs will be high since it is used for business and not personal. Also, most loans do not allow cars to be used for commercial business, if it is a personal loan.
Maybe if the car is really old and you don’t mind it getting damaged, and insurance is usually reduced on older vehicles too
Tesla will likely be the insurer themselves, which they should be to instill confidence in the product.
@zackj997 that’s a very good point
Insurance companies can't prohibit you from using your vehicle for commercial purposes. You just need supplemental insurance because they won't be covering you.
I will believe it when I see it 😅
Soon :)
I'd be interested in this if it also gives me a Ryzen Infotainment upgrade. I'd be willing to spend $8k for FSD to get the new computers included for free!
They’re apparently upgrading RAM now to the MCU, just not sure if they’ll do the CPU upgrade anytime soon
What about HW2.5? I guess all us original Model 3s aren't getting the FSD we paid for.
Yes the upgrade will include those with hw2.5 as well
What about the people that have subscribed for 4yrs?
Likely not
HW3 cars will not be updated. Tesla would need solutions for Y,3,S,X, for only a very few cars, which would cost a lot. They will offer a smoking deal on a HW4 replacement vehicle instead.
Ive heard this a few times and yeah i agree if they gave the option to upgrade with a huge discount im sure many would jump in on the offer
I bought it 😢 2021, 7500
You got it for $7500? That’s a really great deal
@@heyJohnEehe bought FSD for 7500 in a car that cannot use it properly
Not a great deal lol
Hahahah
@@barygol My hope is they let me transfer it to the new model y.
You would think it would easier just to offer model 3 owners 10-15% off on the price of a new car to trade in the old cars instead of going thru the hassle of engineering a hardware upgrade and the hassle of 100,000's of hardware swaps.
That would be something to consider too, but not everyone can afford or want to upgrade though
ps a new front low camera is pure idiocy in bad weather, particularly in snow..just stoopid beyond belief..ASSbugerism defined
That’s why they added heating element and a washer specially to this camera
@@heyJohnEe i know what they spewed. you obviously don't live in a winter climate..washer would run nonstop during a storm and empty the washer container within an hour..heat does nothing during an active drive..it is just Tesla ASSburgerism..like my HW3 which has not been updated since 12.5.4 which equal 12.6.XXX failure another failure on top of another failure on top of another failure..i will be shocked if i ever get 12.5.4 which BTW was a grand regression almost back to Beta..computer just doesn't have enough horsepower...BTW not many people bought the full FSD package because it is overpriced garbage...city only drivers will never buy FSD and Tesla is crap at getting highway FSD working
Almost all new cars have front cameras now. Works fine and usually doesnt get more dirty than reversing cameras.
@@lor8ancgI love FSD. It still isn't perfect but keeps getting better. If you're so sure it's garbage you must know of a much better system that's available for comparison. Comparing it to a system that doesn't exist and saying it's not as good as that is pretty stupid.
