Time to take this beast out and smack it around a bit!
Is the 12429 worthy of a mild brushless upgrade?
    Let's find out.

    I've just ordered one.. Finally.!
After 2 years of passing it over for something else or RC parts, lipos etc, I saw they were down to £59.99 on Ebay & that's the lowest price I've ever seen them for.
They usually stay around the £75/£85 mark so I had to have it at that price.
At least there's loads of info been put out about them over the last 2 years. LOL.

Hey there! Sure this is a 3100kv motor. It's inexpensive and very fast.
It came in a combo kit with ESC (goolRC). Thanks for watching.

I have a jjrc q39, which is pretty comparable to the 12428, and I'm thinking about doing a brushless upgrade. Do you know if I'll have to buy a hobby grade transmitter for that? Also any tips for the upgrade? I'm pretty new to the hobby.

      Hey there! Thanks for watching!
As far as brushless upgrades on the JJRC buggy - which pretty much is the same as the WLTOYS 12428 minus the LEDs (I think) Make sure that the diffs have metal gears. As I mentioned at the end of the video, my 12428 donor car had nylon gears on main shaft as well as inside the differentials. Even a mild brushless upgrade will shred those gears short order... so you may need to upgrade the internals in the diffs and the gear on the main shaft. As far as needing to replace the transmitter, the short answer is yes. You would need a separate receiver and subsequently a transmitter whick will most of the time come in the same package. You can get a decent Flysky transmitter / receiver kit for around $25 - $45..
As far as brushless motors and ESCs are concerned, the name of the game is frugality for me. I do t believe you need to mortgage the back 40 to have fun in this hobby, so I try to go bang for the buck. I used a goolrc ESC and motor. It's not branded "goolrc" but it's the same combo. Around $45 or so for that. Take your time and decide if the JJRC is worthy of the extra power and speed a brushless system will generate. In the case of my 12428 (Across) it was not. (due to nylon gearing in the drivetrain) I am planning a brushless upgrade for my Haiboxing 12815 Protector buggy soon. I will try to post a how to video on that project.
I would recommend (if you haven't already) to tear down your buggy and see not only how everything fits together but also crack open the diffs and make sure the gearing is not nylon and that they are greased.

@@LeSiZmOr I've already had it apart a few times to fix it and the differential gears are indeed metal. It has one nylon gear in the, I dunno what it's called, I'll say equivalent to transmission. So here is the "maybe" bad news. I bought a brushless kit on ebay that said it would work for the q39. I have not installed it yet. But I dont even know what it is except I got a new servo, probably junk, brushless motor, no writing on it to determine the size and no writing on anything else, ESC, receiver and I metal gear which I think is for the motor. I wish I could send pics so you could tell me if I messed up. Btw love the videos and keep em coming!

I think you might be mistaking the spur and pinion gear for the differential gears. You would need to crack open the rear axle assembly and look at the gear at the end of the driveshaft that mates with the gear inside the assembly and diff. I'm not saying you can't go brushless if those gears are nylon.. I'm just telling you what can and has happened (in my case) from the extra power of the brushless powerplant.

@@timwambeke9938 Most of these "semi-hobby grade" vehicles use a 5 wire servo...hobby grade receivers use 3 wire...they're not interchangeable, so a brushless upgrade requires a new servo. Your JJRC probably has the same chassis as the 12428, so a standard 20kg servo is probably too large to fit the space (the 12429 has enough room, strangely enough, to fit a hefty servo). My experience with the 12429, sadly, has been universally bad...broken out if the box, bad rear axle, a shuddering front end...the brushless upgrade was a blast for 15 minutes of fun when the rear axle spun out. The 12428 rear wheel assembly is about an inch less wide than the 12429's, which makes a top-heavy vehicle even more inclined to flip. I fell for the 12429's looks, and I thought the XK label (WLToys higher end products) would make it a higher quality vehicle, but I've been so disappointed after putting a lot of time and money into it. My final solution? I did a brushless upgrade on a 12428 and modded the 12429 body to fit it. $95 for a body? Had I known, I would have bought a 10428 "Warrior" style with the Flysky GT4/5 style transmitter. This was my first strikeout with a WLToys product. So far, though, my absolute fave vehicle of the type is the FY-03H - the brushless version of the Feiyue FY-03...brushless motor, metal body, LED lighting, Dean's connector...with a 3S lipo it COOKS!!! Best wishes with the Q39 - please buy a servo tester if you don't have one before you start your mod, and, IMHO, if you're considering the complete all-metal mods for the suspension on these vehicles - "Don't fix it if it ain't broke"....Thank you MooDog for sharing your experiences!

@@Margotcopeland I bought a complete kit, apparently, minus the transmitter. That being said it does have everything else. Also in the description on ebay or said that it was compatible with the 12428, the Q39 And the Feyute.
