I don’t think anyone needs the “best” hardware. My little sister uses a very basic art app on her phone and she makes really great portraits of her friends and other people. It’s the artist, not the pen.

I think there are cases where gear matters:
If you are a professional and earn money from your art, you rely on your tech. It just can’t fail.
Then you should invest some money for good reliable tech.
For hobbyists I think cheap tech is just perfect. Especially for beginners everything above basic is mostly too complex to get into it.

So, I actually would like to add something important:
if it's fine to start on a Huion 420, I would recommend to quickly switch to a BIGGER tablet.
My best friend used this tablet for 2 years and literally destroyed her wrist.
After seeing specialists, they told her the area is TOO small and the pen TOO heavy. So, things to actually consider when buying a tablet: the weight of the stylus and the size of the tablet.
Specialists told us the best is to go to something similar to a piece of paper at least (so A4 in Europe) to make sure your whole arm is moving and not just the wrist.
This is especially important if you're planning on drawing a lot. Using this tablet two to three times a week, one hour top is fine. More than that is actually putting a serious strain on your wrist, which you don't want if you intend to draw a lot.
So please consider this before buying so you don't end up with a lifelong wrist injury like my best friend.
The artist makes the art, not the tool. But your tool, as an artist is actually your body.
    So take care.
Edit : it wasn't said in the video if I remember but the Huion 420 was actually developed to play Osu! (a rythme game) and not drawing in the first place. Which also explains why it's so small, as Osu! players are only using a small part of it.

    • @isakwondo3293
      @isakwondo3293 4 ปีที่แล้ว +155

@Akari Chu mmh, you can probably still use the huion. As I said, the problem comes with how regularly you're going to use it. For example, the huion can make a very good travel tablet since it's very compact.
Even tho, I wouldn't recommend using it too much, issues not only being the size but also the weight of the stylus.
Then again, even using an A4 tablet, you can have health issues if you're not stretching correctly, drinking enough water or getting up every 40 to 50 minutes to walk a bit.
Remember that your real tool isn't the table but your body. Your tablet is just an extension, an add on.
If your desk really is to small, maybe consider also looking in organizers or ways to organize it in a more ergonomic way so you have the less strain possible when drawing. It might also help with your productivity!
If you're comfortable, then you'll be able to improve/work faster, think of it like a sport.
Better with good running shoes than converses, right? But you can get sores with both if used the wrong way.

The Huion HS64 would definitely be much better than the 420, for not too much more of a price. (I'm french so this can vary depending on the country you live in).
I might edit or add some if some come to mind!

I totally agree dude! I have been drawing on my phone for 2 years now and am finally getting an Wacom Intuos Pro Paper edition next year. It literally depends on the practice you do and the skill you have to do it.

I mean, it does matter tho. If you have good stuffs, you could do many things easier. Like the sensitivity of the tablet, not lagging laptop, etc. Yes, skill is the most important. But material does matter.

    • @aliyahpulido953
      @aliyahpulido953 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

You've got it! Keep practicing what you like and remember to push yourself just a little bit out of your comfort zone each time you try a new drawing! That way you can sharpen your skills and still test out new things and see what combinations you like (line work, shading/hatching, textures, different "mediums" aka brush types, even colors and palettes!)
Don't be afraid to do fanart if you like, and don't let anyone tell you it's not real art! Also, check out artists you like and see what specifically you enjoy about their style. You don't have to copy it but you can certainly learn from it.
(All this coming from someone who took a digital art class for fun, and is now testing the digital art waters too!)
Most of all, have fun and good luck!

@@chuichiro0062 Aww, thank you! I love to draw, but I'm often scared to show others my drawings because I'm always my harshest critic and there's always stuff I don't like about my work. But others will just see how much work and love you put into what you make.
Because of my own personal fears and insecurities and sometimes low self-worth (in general and as an artist), I feel that ANY artist can use a little encouragement that I could use when I feel that way.
All those things are words I wish someone had told me when I started really drawing in my very early teens when school sucked.
I also love listening to LavenderTowne on TH-cam because she gives really great art advice from when she went to art school, and she's very kind about it. She tells you how to build a webcomic or an art TH-cam channel and get noticed, if that's what you want, or just general artists' advice. And again, she's super nice about it and not pushy or snobby at all.

Also the pen tablet connects so well with my laptop and I've learnt to appreciate my art supplies and work on my art skills.

I used to have a "cheap" tablet for digital art for the last 5 years (where I live, dollars are expensive af. The tablet was like 50 bucks)
I go to a public art college (that means it's free, for you americans) so just recently I got one with a screen (also, expensive af even tho it's one the cheapest brands) and it was the best thing I ever bought! It is quite small but going from looking up my monitor to just draw like I do on paper felt like an outta this world experience!!
Thing is, it's not the tablet you use or how many pixels and pressure sens it has, it's the artist that makes the magic happen
So just keep on drawing and never give up, because come day you'll have a huge Wacom bigger than your tv screen to draw all the NSFW art you want! :D

As a person that owns this tablet, as it was my first ever tablet, this thing is very easy to break, I gripped the pen a little too hard and it broke, but they will send you another one if you ask them, or if you unplug it to roughly it can damage the port, it sucks in durability, and is very easy to scratch. however, it is very smooth and easy to work with, and you don't have to have the pen driver to work it, I find that the pressure sensitivity is better without the driver. And I like the texture of the sltablet and it's very comfortable and easy to use once you get used to the bulk of the pen.

i used to own this tablet bought it for osu!, but it caught my eye with its drawing aspect, went to best buy bought a wacom 2017 edition of the intuos small, since then i still dont have a professional tablet but i weent back to hy roots with huion and got the huion h950p with tilt support and battery free stylus, been my main tablet for 2 years, would definitely recommend huion if you dont have the money for a wacom tablet, because huion has more features and bigger tablets for the same price, my tablet cost 80 bucks and is 2x the size of the intuos small which is 75-100 bucks, and has tilt support

Thanks for a great review. I just bought this tablet as my first ever writing tablet, and the small area takes getting used to. Like you, I was also using too much force in gripping the pen and it gets tiring. But after just 15 minutes in, I'm kicking myself for not getting a tablet much sooner than this. I love typing, but I love writing even more. I think this is still a pretty nice option to have when working on the go on my laptop, but I know on my desktop I'd want to get something bigger.

I've been using Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch for like 10-15 years or so. It only has 1,092 levels of pressure. Today I purchased a
XP-Pen Artist 12 off Amazon. With a screen and 8,092 levels or pressure, it's going to be a huge upgrade for me. I spent $100 on my wacom back in the day, this new tablet is only $200. That's a steal in my book.

Isak Wondo wrote below about favouring a larger tablet. I 100% agree. In fact, the tablet I have settled on is an Intuos 4 XL. This is the largest tablet Wacom ever made, and is larger than a sheet of A3 paper. I very rarely get wrist strain for a few very important reasons:
The larger size makes you draw with your arm more
The size of the tablet makes the mapping much closer to 1:1 ratio with my 27" monitor. Because you can't see where you are drawing when looking at the screen, there is a tendancy to adopt a death grip on the pen in order to control the lines. With 1:1 mapping there is a much higher level of control kept, and so wrist pain is hugely lessoned.
The larger size allows your arm to actually rest on the tablet, instead of trailing off the slopes.
Finally, I couple it with Wacom's thinner pen, which is much lighter and much easier to grip. So if you want my advice, try to get a tablet that matches your screen size if you are going to be using it a lot.
