Folding, Flexible, Solo Sleeping Platform -- a compact solution for 4Runner or any vehicle.

  • I'm adding another module to my 4Runner camping collection -- a low profile sleeping platform, to pair with my camp kitchen. An an occasional camper, I needed something small, easy to deploy, and easy to store.
    A platform with room to stash enough stuff for the weekend, but not so tall that I whack my head on the ceiling. If it can be put into a "reclining" position, for reading or working, EVEN BETTER! Not only that, the whole thing can be made with a 4x4 sheet of plywood, and some inexpensive braces.
    This is just the basic structure. Padding, hardware, additional storage, a test camping trip, plus a bonus mini-project are coming in the next video.
    While this is designed for a 4Runner, it can certainly be used in any SUV or car. In fact, it would probably be easier, because you don't have the dreaded "hump" to deal with!

    Fantastic build. I have a similar suv and don't care for my current camper build out. This is definitely a better solution.

    This video is everything I want! I want to keep my seats in place. I want to be able to put away bed frame as easy as possible (I’m a little older and 5’) 😂😂. I LOVE your design.

      Thanks! I did have to add external braces to the legs, but other that, it's still holding up.

    Absolutely awesome. Was looking for a way to make foldable bed platform without removing seats, only my folded back seats are about 20cm above the floor. Also something that can be stored away easily. Thanks so much for this!

    Hi Martha, im about to copy your bed design but I'm thinking of adding 2 adjustable folding legs at the head piece

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That sounds awesome! While I *can* raise the head end, it's a bit of a pain to move around the containers underneath in order to make it happen, so I don't really do it. Adjustable legs would totally solve that. Best of luck with your build!

  • @jakehoelscher8857
    @jakehoelscher8857 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great build! I was just wondering if you can fold the bed frame up while inside the car, or does your space require you to pull the frame out of the back of the car to fold it down?

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yes, you can deploy it within the vehicle, and that's how I usually do it. I load it in closed, on its side, and then open it, and flop it down right side up. I found this way keeps the feet from hooking onto the ridges of the cargo area, preventing me from getting it into place.

    Don’t suppose you could build one for me if I provide measurements? I ask because I struggle currently with the whole building stuff right now and it gets overwhelming. I have a 2009 Subaru Forester that I’m hoping to make flat AND leveled somehow so I can sleep in there.

      When in doubt, more and/or sturdier corners braces. I had to add a couple to the outside of the two legs at the foot end.

    Is the head part is still slightly raised? It looks a little raised.

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe 1/2”-1”? I like to sleep with my head a little higher, so I didn’t bother, but one could trim off the head support just a bit to make it perfectly flat.

    • @phaedrahise
      @phaedrahise 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShoestringMartha it looks terrific. I just built a sleeping platform for the lower half of mine (to even out the hump) and I wish I’d seen this first!
