  • After 9/11, Kevin Flike MBA ’16 felt a duty to serve the nation. He joined the Army, became a Green Beret, and overcame combat wounds to attend MIT Sloan. “There is always a light at the end of the tunnel,” he now tells audiences, “no matter how dark it might seem.” (Learn more: alum.mit.edu/slice/military-ve...)

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, and technology; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place.
The MIT TH-cam channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video.

The amount of intellectuals in the military is pretty crazy and underestimated. I feel like there’s a stereotype that the military is full of ppl who had no chance in college so they just joined the military. Some ppl who joined after 9/11 were kids in Med school, Ivy League business schools, and PhD students who left the books to serve.

Well seeing as how between 40 and 60 percent of enlisted personnel don't stay in beyond their first enlistment that statistic seems somewhat unlikely. Actually impossible. I mean unless of course you have some data to back up that stat. Do you, Dirt, have data to back that up?

Timothy Day He is just exaggerating. In reality it's probably in the 50-60% margin. You want an example? Just take a look at the percentage of the enlisted men in the armed forces and junior nco. They an advance without a collage certificate. It's on merit.

Opioid pain meds are hard to get off of. I suffered a traumatic brain injury while in Afghanistan. When I finally got back to the states to do rehabilitation the psychologist handed my a bag of pills she called a “cocktail”. That cocktail had 13 different meds for anxiety, depression, mood stabilization, sleep, wakefulness, migraine headaches and most importantly a bottle of viagra for the severe erectile distinction I was soon going to have from all the meds. Too bad they did tell me that instead of just thinking about ending my life that these pills were going to push me over the edge and into trying to take my life twice. Long story short, after 2 1/2 years of deep dark depression, constant thoughts of suicide or thoughts of killing others, two suicide attempts, drinking a quart of Jack Daniels a day, getting addicted to methamphetamines and getting charged with and convicted of a felony, I’ve finally got my life back. I still has severe depression unfortunately. I still have suicidal thoughts. Now I’m a felon and that basically voids me from all the jobs I qualify or would want. It could be worse I guess.

Recognition of the Soldier, his fortitude, integrity, the values he has served, the danger he has endured and vanquished, and what these things have made him -- and recognition of this film, essentially, as a piece of professional/institutional marketing for his new career and for MIT -- are in no way mutually exclusive. The latter does not undermine the former, but it should be treated on its own terms.
