No 4x4: The Perfect Thar?

  • Use common sense to analyse the second-generation Thar’s success, and it'll baffle you. A hardcore off-roader with two doors, over Rs15 lakhs, shouldn’t be selling in the thousands! But it does, every month. Most won’t ever go off-tarmac! Mahindra is cashing in with a less hardcore rear-wheel drive Thar. Is the Thar RWD the nicer, more urban Thar you hoped for?

    I think Mahindra should've taken a page out of Ford's book i.e. what they did with the Bronco in the U.S.
    Introduce a "Thar Sport" which is based on a monocoque chassis & have AWD in the mix, ideally a 4 door & under 4m in length or maybe even in the 4-4.5m segment.
    It could've competed with the Jimny in terms of price, in expectations that Jimny is priced nicely & undercuts the thar.

    • @motorinc
      @motorinc  ปีที่แล้ว

      When you are having fun… as for the auto - The 1.5 diesel is a transverse layout and would need more work to be combined with the Aisin. Surely, they will bring an option later.

    • @abs7001
      @abs7001 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@motorinc The 1.5D on Thar is not transverse unit. On XUV300 and Marazzo it's transverse. Mahindra has worked on it and made it North South Orientation for Thar RWD. The reason Mahindra not providing Aisin TC probably could be Mahindra not wanting to spend much on the product or they want to reserve the AT for the higher 4WD variants. Hope they come up later with any transmission option.

    Thar is an amazing product and it value depends on who you are. For example, if you live in hill stations you'll thoroughly appreciate it.
    Most Thar purchase in city is an emotional purchase rather than any real purpose of bush beating.
    But let me tell you one thing, here in Australia this would be a hot cake for what it is capable of. Real bush beaters here who love to venture into no mans land for some reason and camp will absolutely love this and won't really complain about the little inconveniences. Hope it gets here !!

    the 2wd thar is a very good initiative. our roads in India, even those in big cities are generally under repair and full of imperfections, pot holes, debris and all. also, our cities are flood prone in the monsoons making ones way across town can be quite a bit of an off road adventure. a large SUV therefore is most suitable for our needs here in India. hence the Thar is a perfectly acceptable choice as an alternative to the other high GC cross overs that people seem to be buying in the dozens. this vehicle is certainly a heart over head decision. but then, why should everything in this world be driven only by the head?

    • @motorinc

    I think if they made this any further different, it would cost them more at the expense of eating into their urban xuv300.
    Also isn't Thar losing a lot of buyers to the Scorpio for the same reason. It's a 4 door comfortable off roader.
    The Thar is and always has been a car for the heart, so Mahindra has given the RWD like that designer garnish on the side of the dish, doesn't make it any more practical or helpful, but you can now post it on Instagram, getting those few buyers in the fence into the showrooms.

    Spot on, its an indulgence and for that it is selling well.
    We can use the sales of the Thar as a marker of our economic progress.
    But the whole point was to not make the RWD distinct from the 4x4 Thar as its target customers would lose street cred defeating the purpose of the RWD.
    They can reduce the price of the petrol Thar further by using the 1.2 TGDi from the XUV300 Sport.
    The road pliant version of the Thar which Kartikeya wants should be marketed as a new vehicle like the Evoque.
    They can call it Road King since they have that IP too assuming in house suing isn't allowed 😂

So enthusiasts who wish to become off roaders know and professionals who wish to do off roading certainly wouldnt buy a RWD and then have that missing out feeling, As you rightly said buying a THAR is an emotional decision so people who would go for a RWD would know the limits

    Only a handful of vehicles have managed to evoke an emotional response in the automotive landscape of India., like Royal Enfield Bullet, Yamaha Rx100, Maruti Gypsy etc. The Thar is one of them. To buy a Thar is an indulgence, regardless of whether its a 4x4 or 4x2. It doesnt need to make any sense to buy one. Let me put it this way, the R34 GTR gets every JDM fanboy frothing at the mouth (me included). So if the opportunity came where i could acquire a RWD R34, with a slightly different engine, decent performances, cheaper to buy and looks essentially the same as the GTR.. I would pick one instantly. Check out the R34 GT-T. The Thar RWD is basically what an R34 GT-T is to a R34 GT-R.

    What about the BS6 Phase 2 Diesel, its updated yet or not? And getting a diesel SUV in 2023 makes sense to a normal buyer? Provided all this BS6 phase 2 issues and companies pulling out of diesel game. Would love to know your opinions on this.

      Like every automatic manufacturer is saying, running the diesels will be difficult in the future. Nothing will compare to the BS4 era. Normal buyers shouldn't consider a diesel nowadays but if you can live with it, treat your car like a pet (it'll definitely comand long drives twice or thrice a month) then one shouldn't shy away from it.

      The Thar 1.5D has SCR so it uses urea for the exhaust treatment. Which means the biggest investment is done. Will get a fix on the BS6 2 details soon.

    For most cars we consider and reconsider about their fitness of purpose in our lifestyle.
    But in case of the Thar we consider and reconsider the fitness of our lifestyle to suit the purpose of the Thar..😄
    The XUV-300 makes better sense in almost every aspect when compared to the Thar RWD.. but when it comes to the quotient of desirability and image. The Thar just twists your senses of decision making.😄

    Nice informatic video. But I have a doubt ...Mounting the wheel on to back door increases its length. Isn't that Mahendra cheating the government by taking all benifits of Sub 4m and still selling the vehicle with increased overall length . Over all length of Thar will be easily 4300mm....

    • @motorinc
      @motorinc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point! The spare wheel doesn’t count in the overall length! If you remember the Ford EcoSport and Fiat Avventura used to have it there too. Its creativity. The sub4m rule is a unique rule - not entirely logical - and car makers have looked for ways to maximise space inside the vehicle- which would benefit us - the end user. Makes sense?

    At this price point the Xuv 300 series actually makes more sense. Same engine, almost the same boot space and the same mileage, but better comfort, drivability, tons of features and most importantly less or no waiting period. Yes the Thar does have that oomph factor, but the Xuv is easier to live with. And no matter how much nobility the Thar has, with time you will start questioning your life choices. I for one wouldn't definitely not recommend this as your only car.

    I think for the most, the RWD Thar will be a choice to satisfy the ego to make that neighbor jealous. No matter how much people deny, all over the world, especially in India, neighbour's envy is a top priority when buying a vehicle. The RWD will do that, just need 4x4 badges. About the point about different, more tarmac-oriented wheels/tyres, it completely defeats the above purpose. Most people in India, buy a 4x4 for bragging rights (regardless of brand/model), though I must say the number of people using 4x4 has increased lately. But yes, people will hardly use the 4x4 hardware. And RWD Thar can in most situation get you out cuz of its GC and approach/departure angles as long as there is enough traction. And for this, I think RWD works for India. Would I buy one? Nope.
    I would rather save up and invest that little extra moolah in the Gurkha (yeah yeah I know Thar is better, but the heart wants what it wants). The more practical 5 door will also get a RWD version I hear, which should help the rest swing in its favour. OT but I think its high time Mahindra make a Thar Gladiator err I mean a Jeep Getaway.. oh well, you get my point.

    Folks who buy a 2WD version of a 4WD SUV are the kind (I presume) that would offer you a non-alcoholic beer at a new year’s party. Just why?
    If you want to buy a Thar, the only option that should never be considered is whether it should be 2WD or 4WD. The spirit of the Thar lives in its “go anywhere” capability, which is only possible with four-wheel drive.
    In this case, it really is, “it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.”

    The thar has got engine from Marazzo ( 4 cylinder engine) not from xuv 300 which have a 3 cylinders, anyway its not a practical or comfortable car by any means, Thar is a true Two Seater vehicle only, ride quality is very harsh, wind tyre and engine noise also ruins the experience, plastic roof heats up too much and the AC takes its sweet time to work. In my opinion, It was better in 4*4 version only. It is not at all a good daily use vehicle.

    MAHINDRA HAS MADE DEFECTIVE PETROL TGDI ENGINE IN XUV 700 PETROL .
    There are more than 30 cases in known contacts with failed Petrol engine within 2 months of purchase. Either piston rings are worn out or Head valve inside cylinder head is defective.
    TH-camrs should research enough before making any videos. My petrol engine also failed at 5k kms .
    Engine oil was getting consumed internally due to faulty head valve.
    Shame on M&M to develop faulty petrol tgdi engine without any quality control checks . People have invested more than 25 lalhs on xuv 700 and getting engine failures.
