    Good advice Dan, interesting about the pH, this is not something I'd worried about but I will check this out in future. I'm only in my 3rd growing season with melons but as you say it can be very rewarding when you harvest your own melons. I've had most sucess with Ogen and Tiger Melons and this year I'm getting about 5 or 6 full sized (6") fruits per plant. I mentioned to you recently that last year these two varieties crossed and have produced an interesting variety. The potential for melons of the same varietal type to cross is something to bear in mind for those that like to collect their own seed. In addition to/amplify the advice you have given I would include; Grow them vertically on trelis or netting, supporting the developing fruit with net bags or tights. this maximises the growing space, keeps the fruit off the ground away from pest and stops them rotting. When the fruit is ripe and drops off it is caught by the net bags rather than landing on the ground and potentially splitting. It is also much easier to weed around the planst. I believe melons can be prone to stem rot if they get too wet, so growing them vertically can also help with that. The UK growing season is not very long for melons and late August and September can be un-predictable temperature-wise. To maximise the chance of the fruit maturing, particularly for the ones that set late, I start off my plants in late early March on a heated bed. This can be a challenge as the plants are ready to be planted out in their final location in May and the nights can be still too cold for the plants and there is still the chance of a frost. This year I have build a 1m2 heated bed so that I can deal with this issue next May. By starting early I was eating my first ripe melon on the 12th of July and the ones that set later may still reach maturity before the first frost. So far this year from 4 plants I have harvested 5 melons with 10 still maturing on the vine.

    Thanks. Easy to follow without any fluff. Made me smile each time you say what one should do, but you haven't this time. Like preparation of ground and letting toms grow as weeds. I'm planning to grow a single plant of Ogen in my cold frame. Going to go for a mix of ericaceous, manure and my own compost, with some tomato feed to compliment. Fingers crossed...

    Great to see the melons thriving. Interesting that although you've not fussed over them they seem happy enough rambling around together - perhaps they thrive from the additional warmth of the vines overlapping each other. That is the way they are grown in the southern USA, in a melon patch, left to do their own thing. It would be great if you report back at the end of the season on the total melon count and total number of plants, to give an idea of yield per plant. I guess that here in the UK just one or two fruits per plant would be a good result, which is a modest yield but a home grown melon is a bit special. Quality over quantity. ☺

    Good result Dan. My mellons have done absoulutely nothing.
    A cold snap killed half of them I had outside, and the ones in the greenhouse have gone dorment, no flowers or anything.
    pH is ok but I suspect calcium was deficient in ealy growth. Temperature in the greenhouse could have been too high.
    Have also had disappointing results this year with pumpkins but have a bumper potatoe harvest.

    Like your down to earth presentation with lots of very useful information. I was too late last year with my melons so only had two seeds to try this year...they both germinated, hopefully onwards and upwards lol. I’ll use the poly tunnel...was going to put tomatoes, aubergine and cucumbers in there too 😐 😬.
    Ah not sure if you remember but I said I’d over winter my aubergines inside...all was going great but they succumbed to red spider mite in February 😔 ...struggle with this indoors and leaf miner. Got some growing from seed now.
    Bell peppers overwintered survived 40%...but the seeds I sowed are actually growing quite quickly.
    Hope all is well 😊

    That is a good result Dan, I always let the vines roam across the floor of the greenhouse, I just limit the terminal growth and some of the side shoots. I have some growing up stick and making their way around the roof of the greenhouse and others on the floor, I have 2 layers of lge bubble wrap and black bin bags on top, not just for warmth, but to prevent them from drowning in my leaking greenhouse. One thing that I notice, not sure if it is consistent, but my melons seem to put out only male flowers for a while, before the female flowers start to come through. I always thought it was a 'mechanism' by which to gain the interest of insects in advance of need, but I would be interested if this is a universal thing, or just due to my environment here. I have found that this happens every year, regardless of type of melon. I use a kiddie's paintbrush to pollinate.
    Do you freeze/ juice the melons. Many also make candies from the rind. Dan I also bought a steam juicer this week, that would be a good idea for you, given the quantities of fruit that you yield.
    Thanks and all the best, Vox.

      @@homegardens7682 A neighbour of mine ( a young chap) is a chef and has been off work for a while, but going back now. I tried to get him to see that he could apply his skillset to teaching lots of inexperienced people how to get the best results and value out of produce by means of preserving etc. It seems that a lot of techniques that I have learned to use are mostly learnt from the US channels. It costs some money to set up, and takes time to procure all that is needed - I am still waiting on stuff ordered a couple of months ago. In the US, people learn from family and acquire from family or from thrift/ cheap stores - not an option here, it is costly, especially with import issues.
      I also bought a new freezer, an upright and it is currently set up in my lounge. My American F/F is in the kitchen. I am acutely aware of pending food challenges and am getting in ahead. By processing in certain ways I can store in cans (glass jars) on a shelf - which is the best option. I have also added a 2000W powerpack as back up to appliances, for short term use. My steam juicer arrived today - so easy Dan - water in the bottom tier, grapes in the top tier and the steam breaks down the cellulose in the fruit, releasing the juice. I can now buy a load of reduced price grapes and process them quickly, then can the juice - it will last for 1 1/2 years on the shelf. Peach can also be done this way.
      Once you have built this profile, you could easily teach self sufficiency - classes/ privately. The number of people who do not know what to do with what they have or how to grow - my advice is they had better start learning. Take care, Vox.

    Quick questions, should I prune them at all? What about black plastic to seal the top of pot, they're on the gable end of greenhouse and the quadgrow heats up really well through glass, the water reservoir too? As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm trying some melons from real seeds (water and Cantaloupe) in Quad Grows. So far so good, growth is strong (maybe too strong on the quad Grow nutrients I got free with pots, didn't think about the nitrogen). Flowers buds are just forming and they're putting out support shoots like cucumbers to climb. I'm growing them up a frame in the greenhouse made from canes so if I'm lucky enough to get some fruit have a structure to hang hammocks from to support the melons.

    • @homegardens7682
      @homegardens7682  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Black plastic is a good idea as it will help keep the heat in the pot and melon plants like warm roots. I have never pruned melon vines but you could once a good size fruit or fruits has set in order to encourage quicker ripening and/or bigger fruit. Prune the vine a few inches or so after where the melon you want to "nurture" has set.

    • @homegardens7682
      @homegardens7682  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Make sure it has fully set though and is around snooker ball size as it would be annoying if it hasn't set and you cut the vine and no more can form.
